I was talking to my fiances mom today and she was telling me all this shit about joel osteen. She was saying that her husband (really into church and all that) and her son(in seminary school) were baggin big time on joel osteen. They were saying that the reasons they dont like him is because he is a "fake" and makes you just feel good so you will give more money. They were also saying that he preachs so that people will praise him and that in the back of his stage instead of jesus christ is says joel osteen?

personally i really like joel osteen and enjoy listening to him compared to normal boring priests. I think that church is supposed to make you feel good and the idea that he is just doing that to make you give more is nuts.

Has anyone else heard anything like this or know anything more about this. I think he is a good person with a huge congregation of church "goers" and that makes him open for critisim. Post up. :thumb:

I actually heard rumors about that flight. But then again they are just rumors and as you know we are all human and have our boiling points. It wouldnt suprise me if some other preachers wives or people who are supposed to be all holy and stuff have been involved in things like that. The reason it was spread was because know her.

I have seen his tv broadcast many times . He is a feel good preacher but is that worse than someone telling you "Now's the time to be saved for the end is near . " and capitalize on fear like J. Haege does ?

To me that sounds nothing like someone who is money motivated.

To me he just sounds like he is a normal guy who is being attacked because of his success. I like him and feel good or not his sermons are awesome.

Well I see both sides in what you are saying- in today's age most of the preachers incorporate their face into the word just to get a rise to fame...but you have to take the good with the bad...Joel Olestein has a MASSIVE church for a few reasons- and apprenty enough people think he is doing the right thing so there's your sign. He isn't perfect, but he does speak the truth. Also- check out ED Young at fellowshipchurch.com, you can watch Ed's stuff on there, he is freakin awesome and funny too...I go every Sunday and look forward to it...instead of getting bored.

I went to a church similar to Ed Young's church. The problem I had with it was that they didn't spend enough time on the message, and spent too much time on church events and skit type things...flashy stuff. I REALLY enjoyed the sermons and the church was VERY entertaining...but it wasn't like a church I was used to where you go and get a good one hour sermon that was very deep and make you think and dive deep into the bible. I've heard Ed Young's church is much like the church I used to attend, so I've never been interested...

I went through about 30 churches before I found a good one in DFW. I go to Irving Bible Church now and have confronted the pastor about his beliefs and he agreed with me nearly 100% across the board. I was very impressed. They are not money oriented, which I like very much, and the church is modestly built...yet huge inside. I can tell they're in it for the right reasons.

As for Joel Olsteen, church really should be able making you feel good. Why? Because the gospel (the good news) is that Jesus came to save us from our sins, and we don't have to beat ourselves up anymore. We're supposed to be living lives of freedom from sin and condemnation, yet many churches are condemning people and making them feel horrible in order to make money or because they're simply twisted. We can make ourselves feel bad...we don't need a church to do that for us. A church that teaches the truth and makes you feel good about being a Christian is good in my book. It's hard to find nowdays.

I guess my only input, is this: if you're not comfortable with a TV evangelist' message, don't send money. It's free to watch them, and they can't "exploit" you, unless you let them. If you want to tithe, find a local church you're comfortable with. They need the help, and it's more likely their hearts are in the right place when it comes to using the money. IMHO...

The problem I find with Olsteen is that he only preaches in generalizations about the benefits of what we can receive and achieve if we're "good people." I'm trying to remember one time I ever heard him give the people an invitation to accept Christ into their hearts or tell them that the only true way into heaven is through Jesus Christ.

Another thing, which I could see why he has such a large following, is that he never speaks about consequences and the laws that were given to us. You have to preach the good AND the bad to everyone. I'd give him A LITTLE credit if I heard something from him, along the lines of "The wages for sin is death..." or anything like it.

Family of Eagles is the gold coin pyramid, right? I was approached by those guys and even went to one of their "seminars" about 13 years ago when I didn't know any better. I left with a quickness when I realized what it was. I had no idea that was linked to this guy.
