Man I have had a 99 Buell x1 lightning for over a year now and I have never had a problem with it ever. I have ridden all the way to East Texas at over a 100mph for most of the way. It is a good running bike.
It was a 2001 Buell Blast. A 500cc motorcyle that is notorious for having problems. The rest of the line looks pretty strong now.

Word. The older, tube-style frame bikes were loaded with problems (I had a '96 S1), but the newer XB series bikes are completely different, and much, much better. They've won awards for initial build quality. Spent a fair amount of time on an '04 XB12S, beat THE PISS outta it (3rd gear wheelies, 150ft+ stoppies, etc...), and it never missed beat.
Don't mistake the new Buells for the older models. It's true that it's the same company and that would be enough to worry some, but from my experiences the newer Buells are pretty solid.
