View Full Version : Does anyone here use Wells Racing Engines?

I did and I do not intend to do so again. All of my rods were "side polished" and "shot peened". All of the rods were side polished too far causing a weakened area right before the big end of the rod. This rod measures .052"-.055" near the big end and the other 6 still intact are the same. The broken rod left a hole in the block and did a lot of other damage. I AM JUST WARNING PEOPLE OF MY EXPERIENCES!!! It looks like I'll have to eat this short block and move on to another machine shop!!
Josh I have been telling you boys to stay away from that place. Lesson learned.

I had a motor built there years ago and it turned out pretty good, but it was just a basic heads and cam 306 so I guess anybody could do that.

I have used them a couple of times... Quality seems decent (not good, not bad).
Prices are very good, and turn around time was excellent. They also seem to be able to get very good prices on parts (10-15% less than summit).
They charged me $200 to degree my cam and assemble the shortblock, and I just assumed that included blue printing.
When I picked the motor up I asked them how the rod and crank bearing clearances came out with the bearings I took them, they said they didn't know???
They also assembled my heads and set them up for solid roller. It turns out the springs that cam motion sold me to go with the cam were not good enough, and when I called and asked what I/H they set them up on, they couldn't tell me.

Man that sucks, I guess I got very lucky with their work. I am pushing over 600+hp and no problem. But I paid a lot of money and was recommended by one of their friends. I hope you have better luck next time. :o I would be mad as hell it it happed to me. :o

Since you are in Mansfield look these guys up.
Raymac Racing Engines (http://www.raymacracing.com/index.htm)
They are rebuilding my 331 (last guy took some shortcuts we didn't find out about until too late). They built a 632 for one of my dad's friends. With a small shot of nitrous, it has been 4.6's in an outlaw top sportsman car. May be worth your while.

I've seen quite a few rods break in that area that weren't even on big power engines. I'd be more concerned with the bores bieng to tight causing the rod to break... How much power did it make? how many RPM's?
Sure sucks to scatter a motor this early in the season :(
Josh if you dont use that guy up in Denton. Warehouse in Irving does some good work at a great price. Max has been building badass shit for a long time. I know what goes on up at Wells, I had a friend work their for a few years and I wouldnt take my shit up there.

Try Charles Automotive Machine in Arlington. I was very impressed with his work. A little pricey, but not too bad.

I also will never go there again, Had a similar shitty situation about 8 years ago. There fault and they admitted it. But wouldn't fix it.

They built my cousins dirt car motor that made 575 rwhp on the engine dyno and he turns it 8200 rpm every weekend and all he does it have it freshened up at the end of the season. Very stout motor they built him. Made close to 700 on the engine dyno.

I have used them serveral times and had no issues. However I only use them for the machine work. I do all my own assembly and clearences. Dennis seems to be pretty nice guy. How many RPM's where you turning when it broke?
So how much cheaper are they than say Keith Craft or Hans Feustel?

I have used them for basic stuff and it turned out nice. I even remember riding my bicycle to their shop carrying a flywheel that needed turning so I could race the next day...they are right down the street from me

Let me rephrase it. Here is my cousins car and they built the motor. It dynos 575 to the tires and no problems all season long.

Well, I hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear, so about 6,250 rpms. This was done with no supercharger belt on; I'm glad it wasn't on there when it decided to let go. They may not be a bad machine shop, they just ground my rods to almost paper thin where the beam meets the big end of the rod!

It looks like he is probably sponsored by Wells; so they would spend alot more time to make sure everything is perfect before the engine goes out of the shop!

All machine shops run business that way. If you are a "preferred" customer then more attention is paid to your stuff. They will even throw you first in line. Others just get basic service. This isn't the first time I have read or heard or even seen about these types of things happening. It happens daily I am sure. You have to know someone that knows somebody that they know.....or atleast tell them a lie and say you know Tamestangs cousin so they don't get dropped as a sponsor.

They don't sponsor him. They did put it on the engine dyno before they gave him the motor then we put it in the car. Then we took the car to their chasis dyno and did some more pulls.

Show the broken rod. did they have arp bolts? Was the crank stock?
Rods usually break on the big end because of spun bearings.
All I have EVER used is Wells. 2 302's and 2 351w's broke both stock 302 blocks running 9's. botton end was fine on both, stock cranks and rods with arp's. my first 351 is now a spare motor and lasted 5 years bracket racing every weekend. Makes 670 hp with a street roots and alky. The motor we have now can run 9.50's and 5's.

There is no claim where they run. Here is a pic of the same motor in the old car. Kinda hard to see though.

Yup it would be fun to run there. That same place that my cousin keeps and works on his car has a sprint car. Jasons Johnson is the driver and they run at devils bowl too sometimes.

I know Jason Johnson, His parents help run the ASCS Gulf South Region, really good people. I think he runs mostly midwest stuff now, as he lost his Outlaw ride. What's your cousins name?

yeah I was checking it out. Bad azz ride man. Love it. My cousins name is Colby Smith. He ran devils bowl last year and got a couple feature wins. Totaled his orange car into the turn 4 wall. Yeah Jason was at the shop in his motor home. I guess they are getting ready to run some races. I'm not really sure when or where they are going to race.

Tell them Sean Mayfield said GL. and lose the crotch rocket and come play with the big boys. :D Something that can pull a wheelie on DIRT! in total I'll probably have ~15k tied up in mine when it's done. Never add up how much you've spent on a race car, you'll get depressed quick.

I would love to come run dirt with you guys. I would want to run a modified prolly. Oh I know never add up how much you have tied up in it but really that's pretty good considering you could have that much tied up just in a motor!

Why would you want to run a modified? Those things are pieces of crap IMO, you have to run against 50 other no driving hacks that love to beat and bang and tear up your shit. You'd be suprised how much the 305 that I'll be running costs. Injectors, Mag EVERYTHING for around 6k when you step up and build an ASCS motor, that's when shit gets expensive. Check out this site, that's the series I'll be running with http://www/sprintseriesoftexas.com

They race good at devils bowl and the sprint cars flip all the time and tear up a lot of crap.
racrguy
02-17-2006, 10:46 PM
I'll give you that one, there is no such thing as a cheap wreck in a sprinter.99% of the time they only flip when they get together with someone. I have seen them flip many-a-time when they hook a rut caused by the "fullbodied" cars, including the modifieds. a lot of times they'll just run around the track with a flat like nothing is wrong and rut it up worse than a plowed field.
