They already beat the Spurs, Suns, and destoyed Detroit. They also proved they can stop Koby. But this game will decide if they are contenders???

They are definitely a contender no matter what happens tonight, this Mavs team apparently can play some D. They have held all opponents under 100 during this win streak. I dont get a chance to catch much Mavs action here in Va, should be a good game to watch.

Great first half by the Mavs! Up 51-38 at the half. Shooting 48.8% will definately win you some games.

The stat that says it all in this game: 11-16 from the 3-point line - 68.8%

Now you know why there are 2 Mavs going to the 3-point shooting contest this year.

Make it 13 in a row for the Mavs with a 112-76 win tonight over the Heat.

Hmm... if you beat the Miami Heat by 36 points is that a sign that you may be in the running?

GO MAVS!!!

Damn! Even Mbenga looked awsome! That guy is becoming a fantastic player and I would love to see him in the mix more. So many amazing players on this team and they have got great chemestry. If 'Quis gets back to where he was before his injury I don't know who will be able to stop us!

He had a pretty decent game, it was the rest of his team that was in the locker room.

9-12 for 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 assist is pretty good.

Damn! Even Mbenga looked awsome! That guy is becoming a fantastic player and I would love to see him in the mix more.Hell yeah. Mbenga showed a couple moves tonight - a nice little jump hook and a fade away jumper. I was hoping he'd get into the game with about 8 mins to go. At least he got 5 mins.

I can't believe how hot JET was coming out of halftime. In the first 4-5 mins, he nailed 3 3 pointers.

Now we have a 13 game streak going and we're playing at Denver tomorrow night. If we get past Denver, we got a couple of pansies(Knicks and Wizards) at home before the break. Mavs could be looking at a nice 16 game streak headed into the break.

GO MAVS!!!!

Best news I heard all day... Now I get to call all the folks in south florida and talk shit. A friend told me that the Mavs were going to look "cold" when the heat came through... I said they might look cold blooded. Turns out i was right, 36 point win is just dirty. :D

I was just looking and the Mavs 3 headed monster at the center position combined for 17 pts, 17 boards, and 3 blocks. If the mavs could get that production consistently from the center position, they'd be nearly impossible to beat.

They've needed a center for a long time.

they have had consistency the last 13-15 games...and damp has stepped it up big time..thats why they are on such a roll....man they are looking good....they may be there with detroit by the allstar break.....and those dang spurs need to lose once in a while...they got like a 8 game streak going....but the mavs are looking contenderish.

I want to see more Mbenga as well... If we are up by 20+ with 8 or so minutes left they should put him in until he messes up badly. I would love to see Damp do as well as he has been doing for the rest of the season and also see what we can get out of Mbenga, then when the season is over trade Damp for some draft picks later on down the line or something.

Jet's contract is up this year and that scares the crap out of me. He is going to get a crapload of money! I think that we can keep him, but I don't want to lose anyone on the team (except maybe Damp).

I hope that we play this well against Denver. Don't look past the games after that at all though... don't you remember when the Knicks stuck it in and broke it off not that long ago?

As much as I enjoy the win, there's still room for improvement. They did great by shutting down Wade and Damp outboarding Shaq 10 boards to 8, but Shaq still had 23 points. Take the win, but look at what could have been improved on... that's what makes for an awesome all-around team. I have no doubt they'll be owning the league, but there's always going to be a few big players that'll put it to ya.

BTW, with the way that Denver has been looking lately, expect win #14 tonight.

What do you think could have been improved upon? Nothing major I'm sure, maybe a couple of lapses in defense but from my seat it was pretty much a picture perfect game IMO.

No, nothing major... but when you stop trying to improve, you get busted. They're doing great, but like you said, a little lapse on D here and there.

Good write up from the DMN's Tom Cowlishaw. Also gotta love this quote from Shaq.

"This," said Shaquille O'Neal, "was just a good old-fashioned Texas beat down."

Here is the Tom Cowlishaw article.

NBA's best? It's the Mavs

11:50 AM CST on Friday, February 10, 2006
http://www.dallasnews.com/s/dws/img/standing/sports/columnists/mugs/mug_cowlishaw.jpg

The best team in the NBA was at it again Thursday night, shredding a hapless opponent and inching on toward the best record in the league.

Nothing new for the Dallas Mavericks, winners of 13 in a row over the last month.

Best team? Not the Detroit Pistons?

Not at this moment, not with Detroit losing three times in the last two weeks. Not at a point in the season where depth matters so much, and the Pistons don't have much, and the Mavericks' superior depth to everybody else in the NBA is really starting to rear its head.

It showed up huge again Thursday, not that they needed it much, when the Mavs handed Miami a brutal 112-76 defeat, doubling the Heat's previous worst losing margin. Jerry Stackhouse and Keith Van Horn each had 14 points off the bench. Erick Dampier had 11 rebounds off the bench.

The Mavs' bench outscored Miami's 49-25 even though the Heat reserves played more minutes.

The defeat left coach Pat Riley shaking his head and all but crying out for help.

"Right now, we're seeing teams that are hungry, absolutely committed," he said. "Avery [Johnson] and Mark Cuban and the players can take credit for that."

The Mavericks are taking the notion of what makes for a great team and standing it on its head. That's OK as long as the team keeps knocking opponents on their butts.

Dallas ranks last in the league in assists per game. That runs contrary to the perception of what constitutes "team" basketball, everyone sacrificing for the common good.

But it's really just a style of offense the Mavericks have adopted that, right now, no one can stop. And it was elevated to the elite level by the return from injury of Stackhouse.

The Mavericks' 13th straight victory looked a lot like what had come before, at least until the middle of the third quarter when the Heat called it quits. This was the eighth time in this streak that the team has won by double figures.

And yet, believe it or not, it's the Dallas defense that causes opponents fits. At least, that's the case, according to Riley.

"They attack you defensively. A lot of their offense is forcing you to take tough, quick shots," he said. "They do a lot of good things defensively to change up what you're doing."

When's the last time that kind of statement was heard about the Mavericks?

Since Stackhouse came back into the lineup, Dallas is 20-3. That's why with Stackhouse coming off the bench and doing the kinds of things he did Thursday, such as hitting huge 3-point shots at the ends of the first two quarters, the Mavericks are the best team in the NBA.

Period.

There's little argument right now. They have been better with Stackhouse in the lineup than Detroit has been, than San Antonio has been, than any other team on the planet has been.

The Heat players were calling them that Thursday night, causing Stackhouse to remark, "The way they got beat, I know why they feel that way."

We don't know if it can last until June. We don't know how much the Mavericks' big advantage over opponents, which is that great scoring depth, will be diminished in the postseason when games on back-to-back nights do not exist, and the team with the best five or best seven players usually wins.

But what is important is being seeded first or at least winning your division.

Johnson is trying to guide the Mavericks where they have never been, which is the NBA Finals. To get there, it's a really, really good idea to win your division and be seeded first or second in the West.

Over the last 10 years, six No. 1 seeds and three No. 2s have represented the West in the Finals. The only aberration was the 2002 Lakers, who were seeded third. But they were also two-time defending champions who knew how to get it done in the postseason.

The Mavericks don't know how to get it done. Yet.

But they know how to win in January and February, and they are working overtime to keep pace with San Antonio.

Eventually, their depth should allow them to surge ahead of the Spurs.

There is a world of difference between the No. 1 seed and the No. 4 seed that the loser of this Texas battle will have to accept.

The Mavericks don't want to be that loser. Since Jan. 11, they haven't been any kind of loser at all.

Mavs destroyed the Heat :D I am talking a little trash here at work, nobody wants to give the Mavs their due, those boys from Dallas can play a little bit.
Great game, deepest team in the league
