Well, I completed my comp license requirements this weekend so it's official that I am now a licensed race car driver!!!

anyway, part of the comp program was for me to start at the back of the pack in each race to learn how to pass.....well, let's say I figured it out because in my first door to door race EVER....I ended up on the podium for 3rd overall in a 21 car field. Most races lasted 20 minutes or about 8 laps. Let's just say I was busy.

2nd race on Saturday didn't start till the sun was actually below the tree line...pulled the same effort and was door handle to door handle with the 2nd place car coming out of the last turn to the checkered flag but I was on the inside and roasted the tires for about 150 feet and missed second place by about a fender and a door... :(

3rd race on Sunday was a standing start which I decided I would watch from the back and learn. Still ran the field and got 3rd overall.....sensing a trend here...

4th race Sunday afternoon was an inverted start from finish of race 3 which left all the fast cars at the back of the pack. We cleared the field and I ran down the second place car with three laps to go. for two laps, no more than 5 feet seperated our cars and I was trying everything I could think of to get around a VERY good and seasoned driver. At one of the hardest braking points on course...125mph to about 30 mph, I got along side and divebombed his ass...CLEAN!!! From there I ran away from him and took second!!!

All in all a GREAT weekend and the VT motor was SOLID!!! Thanks to VT for the motor and HPP for the STOUT tune and torque curve as I was destroying lighter cars under power like they were sitting still! first race weekend, 4 podiums and $150 in tire contingency money and left sitting 3rd in points for American Iron, held AI track record on Saturday and brought the car home in one piece....can't ask for much more fun than that!

If you guys are looking for a show like we put on this weekend in Houston, we will be at MSR in Cresson, south of FTW on March 4/5... This is going to get interesting!!!

John sold that car but was running David Armstrongs AIX car that had been Seriously detuned to make the power to weight ratio....same basic suspension setup as John's #23....and yes, he took all four races.....and my lap record by .2 in race 3....Given the money spent on that car though....I will gladly be .2 behind!!!

Beej, you are more than welcomed to come down to Cresson in March. You can even help out in the pits. I will put you on my pit crew list for free admission.

I think he had similar lap times to AI cars, and did run with the group a time or two. You need to get into these track days and whatnot, especially with a well-handling car like your SS! You'll quit dragracing, that's for sure!:)

In a well-handling car?!? I need some subframes to come even close to getting this boat to handle...and I think I'd be over the 9:1 power to weight ratio lol jk.

Matt never raced in AI last year....

Just ran open track events in a heavy underpowered car and was matching qualifying times of the 2nd and 3rd place cars....I am starting to get the idea I know what I am doing on the track and in the garage building the car.....so do the 20 other drivers I beat this weekend all of which have atleast a full AI/CMC year under their belts and some A LOT more than that. Ego hat off.....

Yellow just needs to go back for a second helping of dick and shut up like a newb should. Dyno racing is one thing, strapping your ass in a car and going 120mph with 20 other cars around you is another thing that has nothing to do with HP or being BS. Read it in GRM next month about the rookie getting a podium in his First race ever and a second by the end of the weekend. I backed up my shit talk...Period.

For the record on HPP's dyno: I have dyno'd at HPP and at another place 3 days later....the dyno is accurate, repeated SAE pulls within 1 hp, it just depends on what numbers you quote...sae or uncorrected.

On street tires, you wouldn't be able to use it anyway. To get your car on track, you would atleast have to do the 1 day event for the HPDE. We could take you out in Group 1 and then I could take it out in Group 3/4....just make sure you bleed the brakes well and the tires and brake pads are up to par. That's a big heavy catfish to get stopped from 130!!!

Yeah, group 5 was insane to watch. i just sat at the first corner watching cars go off in the dirt.

That was my first road race to see in person, and it is by far better than drag racing. The entire time i was there, i was like i wish i new somebody that i could go around the track with. Do you have a picture of your car you could put up?

i got addicted and didn't even go out on the course. I was sitting in my lecture classes today and all i could think was hearing cars going around the track.

i wish they had a viewing area for the front and back straight, i saw a black formula in group 2 i think, just pull like crazy.

I wish i could go around a road course with my car but an automatic, convertible, drag oriented car is a little to costly to change toward the road racing.

Not many. I got a picture of Chris "the lawnmower" Lyons, a few of mine, the big group picture and that was it. David Donovan's wife and Corey's crew were snapping pictures all weekend. I think you too suffered from being a team of one and making sure to get all of our stuff done.

PS...congrats on finishing your comp requirements too!! I think the TX region is about to start taking flight for sure.

Raymond, Darren and Beej are getting my only 2 crew spots....but I could probably tell you that the officials won't know any better. Just mention my name and they would probably let you in....not that I have any pull or anything....

At MSR Cresson they keep track of the names w/ teams. Don't worry about my name on there Matt, I think I can get in on a couple of other guys. If not I'll pay the entry fee, what is it.. like $5..$10 or something nominal like that...

I actually want to be a productive member so that when I am ready in two years I have a better understanding plus if Matt breaks something he will need someone else to stand there and say Damn! and then to get fixing before the next session. I do not mind spending the weekend it is a fun envinroment. He just needs to share the trailer to sleep on. I have my own sleeping bag, no sharing, unless he turned into a hot blonde in the past 3 months. Raymond

Not likely....what they are finding is that it is MUCH more dangerous than they thought and you are going to start seeing a lot of ARMCO going up. From what I understand, the evaluation from the insurance company was a resounding "I don't think so".....

We will likely just be running the standard 1.7... I am shooting for some mid to low 23's....I have already run a 24.0 JG was running 22's last time and track record is a 21.2 for AI.....and that guy thinks it was a timing error.

Vid from race #4 from Mike Bell's CMC mustang....start to finish I think....

the silver SN95 and blue/yellow winged cars were who I was chasing and I eventually passed the winged car for second.

I enter the picture at about 3:05 and then continue my chase....

Matt,
I talked to MSR-C yesterday and they are still working on completing the new track. They have it on their calender that the 3.1 track will be open to run in about 2-weeks but I think that might pushing it.
I hadn't heard the info. re. the insurance on the new track b/c of the configuraiton but that doesn't surprise me at all.
Marshall and I are probablly going to be testing the Fri. afternoon before the March event if you want to head down with us. We should be able to squeeze you in for some sessions under one of our names if you want. I'll keep you posted on details as it gets closer.
BTW, I'm hopefully going to dyno my car tonight so we'll see if the car falls w-in the required #'s.

Info on the insurance deal was just a rumor so who knows if it's true...?

I think i might try to go out with the Apex school on the 18th....I need to speak with John Holmes about that but I also need to get the radiator repaired before then too.....along with the oil pressure sending unit and a power steering oil cooler. I am going to pull the radiator tonight and get cracking on looking the car over for any signs of fatigue. I spoke with JG this morning and it looks like there are going to be a few more cars at Cresson that weren't ready for Houston. I also just realized that I got $175 Toyo bucks this weekend!!! This could work out well for me if I keep this up...one new tire every 4 weekends and one set of 4 lasts 4 weekends.....tires for free! Just need to stay on the track.

Not one bit. I was fuel-starving going through the carousel but I think I only had about 5 gallons at the time. Pick-up unit on right, gas on left, not the best combo. Once the car got straight everything picked up so I'm guessing that was the cause.

Damn Matt your car is moving out there compared to the field. (atleast in that video I suppose) Are most of the cars not close to the target hp/weight? Or is your setup just that good? :D

Most of the cars you see in the video are CMC cars that are 3150lbs and 230/300

AI cars have modified suspensions, run 2800-3200lbs and have upto 330/350..big difference in power/weight. AI cars are typically 4-6 seconds faster per lap than a CMC car and in road racing, that is an eternity.

JC, I am just giving you shit man....just like that time I beat you at kennedale! ;)

Cheez, you typically have to do a minimum of 4 HPDE's with NASA and then get approved by the lead instructor to move from Level 1 to level 4, then approved for Racecraft which means you have to bring a NASA legal racecar that passes full tech inspection. then you start 4 races from the back of the pack. If you complete the races without incident, then your provisional license requirements are complete and you are on probation as a rookie for 8 more races....2 full weekends in our region. It takes about a year to complete the requirements and I will be honest, it isn't cheap. figure about $1800 and that obviously doesn't include wear items like tires, brakes and lodging or the price of the car.

Murph, you should lose the two bastards and get you a CMC mustang....there are a few candidates around that need finishing and there are a few that are already done. I know of a VERY nice one that Wayne Manor has and have heard rumors of $15k....a steal for THAT car.

Someday I will run with you and the big boys. I'm still trying to grow my driving balls. I was butt puckering on the street tires around turn one at TWS. Felt like Bambi on ice.

Next step is some stickies and more track time.

Great vid!

Try coming down the hill not lifting at 140mph and waiting a full second before hitting the brakes and slowing only to 95-100!!! That takes some f'n balls!!!

yeah your set is bigger and made of titaninum.

Poor little Probe only hit 82ish around turn one with me gritting my teeth and sucking seat cover up my arse.

anybody heard anything about this track?! A buddy just sent me a link.

if you aren't already running them...Get the RA1's...they last forever and take a fucking beating that you can't imagine. Best bang for the buck tire on the market....hands down.

Are you shaving the Toyo's or using them full tread depth? When are you buying your next set. Let me know I may be ready to get some. I want to get some more seat time without sticky tires though, figure I will learn more sliding and not going as fast as I would like.

Already have one of those kind of mirrors and you can't see shit on the sides of the car.

Raymond, it will be a few months before I order again. Shaved is the only way they last...full tread starts chunking and gets hard about 1/2 of the tread left and they stop being sticky. Call Vilven tire...number is in the NASA CCR...275/40/17's shaved are $180 ea....for nasa members.

Darren, keep in mind, the power level I am at I can only lose about 40 lbs more out of the car. That's the sound deadening and the purge cannister. Anything else will need to be added back in as ballast but i could put it lower and in the better location for balance i guess. Just too much hassle. I would rather just get the job done with superior driving! ;) did you see my late braking manuever on the night vid yet? First time I saw it I was like "HOLY SHIT!" and those were AI cars too!

The great thing about this weekend is that there were 14 cars with in-car cams and they are all starting to surface this week. Great tools for evaluating the weekend. David Donovan is going to post vids and about 300 pictures from the weekend soon so it should be good marketing material for the TX region.

Pie in the sky for LMP....They don't have a dime for funding yet. It took 5 years for Cresson to finally get built, 4 years for MSR H....and it technically still isn't done!

I am not going to hold my breath but if it does happen, it COULD host the US grand prix at some point as it will be FIA certified....problem is that it is centered in NASCAR country. West coast would have a better chance for F1....

I'd be willing to put a grand on a 10 year bet that F1 in Houston NEVER happens, not at that track anyway. F1 is hurting in the US at the "track of tracks". After last year's fiasco it will be interesting to see if F1 even re-ups their contract w/ Indy for just one more year, not to mention relocate. I mean, think about it. <Italian/French/what ever accent> "Hey {insert accent appropriate "Joe" here} how about you and I go to Houston Tx for the F1 race?".

Not going to happen. Period.

However, that's a completely different conversation... :D

It would be a tough sell. Last time they had it in Texas, Dallas Actually, Nigel Mansel was passing out in the car from the heat and ended up pushing a broken car across the finish line....not to mention that the heat was causing the asphalt to come apart with the cars running over it! Dumbfucks should have thought about holding a race event in the summer in Texas a little bit more.... :p

Look at the GP of Bahrain, heat AND sand. GP Malaysia, heat AND humidity far above our own, even Houston's, I believe. Not to mention Indy in July. No it's not as hot as it is here, but it's more humid and can get into the high 90's.

Nah, it's not the heat. It's the location. Texas is a great and respected state world round. But that doesn't mean shit to the FIA. Now, don't get me wrong. I would GLADLY admit that I am wrong the day I buy my ticket on the Start/Finish for the US GP, Houston! :D
