It is erasing your hard-drive and starting from scratch.

Its not hard. You backup your mydocs and photos. If you buy another computer, how are you going to get that virus infected data off the old one? Geek Squad will rape you up the fucking ass.

im not going to buy a computer, thats the poitn im trying to make. If i wanted to erase my entire hard drive, id just go buy another computer instead and start from scratch. But i dont wanna start all over. I want to keep all the shit i have. YOu guys know how to do all this backing up your files and what not, but i dont.
Which is why i made this thread...
so could SOMEONE please instruct me?? :(

Seriously, you should learn how to do backups. A software failure you can recover from. Once that hard drive goes tits up you will not recover anything. Drive space is cheap these days. Also, it is best to backup all your data, format and THEN install your OS...patch and then install all your apps.
You're on borrowed time if you are not backing up your data.

I prefer copying/using an app to copy stuff from one drive to another. The only time I use CDs/DVDs is to archive data...pictures, vids, OS images...etc

That'll get you started. It does not need to be anything elaborate...buit all that music and other junk needs to be copied/backed up periodically. I only do my backups about once every 2-4 weeks. It sure beats losing everything.
