i have a friend that runs this software that doesn't exist anymore, but he would rather use a dinosaur computer than learn a new system and get a decent computer. anyway, i talked him into getting a new laptop and trying out a new software, but he likes his old one better. it runs on dos and he prints on this tractor style printer that you can hear for miles! anyway, is it possible to run that program on his new laptop and get some sort of laser printer that will print from dos? right now he's running a windows 3.x machine to run that software... any help is appreciated!:)

thanks,

brad

If it aint broke, dont fix it. He probably needs an impact printer ( aka tractor feed/dot matrix ) so he can print on impact paper, laser printers cant do that.

I still use Norton Commander...

NC ;D

The Norton Commander is the most useful DOS program ever written. Symantec (The makers of NC) dropped the ball when Windows 95 arrived. They now have Norton Navigator, which is not really any different than Windows Explorer. There is a Norton Commander for Windows 95 that was written overseas (Ireland, I believe), but many of these Shareware "Commanders" are better implementations. There does seem to be a Commander program for every OS: Unix, Linux, OS/2, Windows, and DOS. I haven't found one for the MacOS, but I don't have a Mac, so I haven't looked very hard.

I dont think you understood. If he is using an impact printer, does he have to print on 2/3 form paper? Laser doesnt do impact printing, IE impact is better for invoices.

Yeah, if he needs the dot matrix, he needs to stick with it. However, for the new computer, you might have him look into the FreeDOS (http://www.freedos.org/) project. Using DOS 6.22 or whatever version he's got now, might not work quite right with the new hardware (one instance being in the support for the new devices, but mainly in how fast the processor is compared to DOS days). FreeDOS should be pretty up to date for hardware, and should still be compatible with old DOS software so he can still use the program he's using.

i honestly don't know much about the printer, but it looks to be standard sized paper with tractor feeds on the sides that tear off... the software just prints a report...nothing special. i just assumed that he was using the tractor style printer because that's what he's always used and never changed...or he couldn't find a printer that would adapt to the dos stuff.
