Who in your opinion was the fastest man in the NFL. Not really talking about 40 yard dash, just overall.
Denny

Mike Vick Atlanta Falcons (supposedly ran 4.18 and 4.2 40 at a draft event )
Allen Rossum ( Won the 2005 NFL Fastest Man)
Antwaan Randle-El
DeAngelo Hall ( VT record 40-yard time of 4.15 although questioned)
Tyrone Calico ( Ran a 4.3 at his combine)
Jerome Mathis ( Ran a low 4.3 combine)
Old timers
Deion Sanders (4.28 combine record)
Bo Jackson ( Supposedly 4.1 "wind-aided 40 time) *cough*bullshit*cough*
Darrell Green ( Ran a sub 4.3 for most of his career)
Brett Periman ( Ran a sub 4.3 combine)
Rocket Ishmael (4.3 combine)

i'd have to say fastest i've seen was deion. maybe not 40 speed per say, but was always as fast as he needed to be. he used to just bait people. i saw him bait the raiders qb one day into throwing to tim brown, deion gave tim about 5-10 yards, tim was running a deep rout full speed. deion closed that 5 plus yards on brown while the ball was in the air and picked it off.

Something tells me if you find Andre Ware you will find: Rashaan Salaam, Danny Wuerfel, Eric Couch, Pat Sullivan, Gino Torretta and Charlie Ward. That place where all the Heisman busts go to re-live the old days.

I was trying to remember all the Heisman busts.
Pat Sullivan was the first one to win it that I remember. I think in 1971. Played with Auburn.
I think the Falcons took him, he played with them as a backup for a few years. I also believe he had the all-time lowest QB rating for the NFL.

pro football weekly's list:
Hayes, Green top list of NFL’s fastest ever
By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
As published in print Sept. 24, 2001
Ex-Cowboys WR
Bob Hayes
Some players have what is known as football speed. Others have track speed. Some have both. In his prime, Darrell Green may have had the best combination of the two. Jerry Rice, in his prime, never ran under 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash for the stopwatch. Yet in terms of football speed, he was about a 4.3 guy. On the other hand, Eddie Kennison won races that made him the NFL’s fastest man in gym shorts. But after he puts the pads on, he rarely shows that type of speed on the field. With this in mind, we asked NFL insiders who they believe had the best combination of track and football speed. (List only includes post-merger players.)
1. Bob Hayes / Cowboys – "World’s fastest man and fastest football player in his prime."
2. Darrell Green / Redskins — "Nolan Ryan was throwing 100 mph when he was over 40 (years old), and Green was running sub-4.4 (in the 40) and still running with all the racehorses."
3. Cliff Branch / Raiders and Mel Gray / Cardinals (tie) — "Both were diminutive sprinters no defensive back could stay with. If they were close to even, they were leavin’, and you needed to keep a seven- to 10-yard cushion against both or else they would eat up your cushion and be by you before you could react."
5. Bo Jackson / Raiders — "Before his injury, he was the fastest big man I ever saw. However, he still was more track- than football-fast."
6. Randy Moss / Vikings — "If he trained for it, he could be a world-class sprinter."
7. Wesley Walker / Jets — "A true jet."
8. Homer Jones / Giants, Browns — "A king-size receiver who could run like a deer."
9. Deion Sanders / Falcons, 49ers, Cowboys, Redskins — "Rare playing speed and excellent but not great track times."
10. Rick Upchurch / Broncos — "Could go from zero to 60 like a race car."
Others mentioned: Stanley Morgan, Lance Alworth, Isaac Curtis, Willie Gault, Jimmy Johnson (49ers), Willie Buchanon (Packers; before injury) and Eric Dickerson.
Players with great timed speed who never could get it to translate to the field.
1. Johnny "Lam" Jones / Jets
2. Rocky Thompson / Giants
3. Eddie Kennison / Rams, Saints, Bears, Broncos
4. Larry Burton / Saints
5. Gerald Tinker / Falcons
6. Steve Raible / Seahawks
7. Gaston Green / Rams
8. Randal Hill / Cards, Dolphins
9. Alexander Wright / Cowboys
10. James Williams / Bills

Willie Gault for the Bears. He was pretty fast. I'm not sure what his 40 time was though
He was very fast, I think he almost made the olympics. Darrell Green was the guy who always won the fastest man competitions at the pro bowl. Bo was probably the most unbelievable package of speed and size the league has ever seen. Bob Hayes was the first speedster deep threat in the NFL. Alexander Wright who used to play for the Cowboys was seriously fast but could not catch for shit. Joey Galloway was clocked at 4.18 at the combine.

Good list.......Kennison has kinda had an ok mini-career with the Chiefs....You left one speedy olympian from the list. Renaldo Nehemiah.........that guy was horrible!

one of my old high school coaches said he read in a SI magazine some years back that when the NFL scouts came to watch Deion run the 40 at his college "Florida State" that they were out there and Deion came out in his jogging suit, took it off, put on his running shoes, lined up and ran the 40, but didnt stop, after he ran the 40 he just jogged into the locker room. The scouts looked on the stop watch and he ran a low 4.3
I guess he knew he ran good so didnt bother turning around.

I havent seen James Jett who played for the raiders mentioned. He had crazy speed. I personally dont think Dion was ever the fastest flat out speedster. I have seen him get beat. In his day, what about Jerry Rice?
Last year I heard one of the commentators mention Tyrone Calico was the fastest man in the NFL bar none ( when he is healthy of course ).
And if anybody remembers Robert Smith. The vikings running back that retired just cause he didnt want to play no more just a couple of years back. He left in his prime and walked away from all that money he was making.
On a side note, who thinks that the fastest man in the NFL competion is really a good way to measure the fastest of the fast? Last years winner was getting reeled in midway down the 40. If it would have gone maybe 60 yards, he would have come in second at best. Looked to me like the two of the competitors were just getting to their full speed at 25 thirty yards, they just didnt have the exlosion from the start. For once, I would love to see them race the full 100 just as if they were on the field. I know thats a wishful dream, just saying it would be cool to see. That way we would really know who was the true fastest man. Just my two cents.

Vick cant run a damn 4.18, V-tech is known to lie about 40 times.. For example Kevin Jones and his 4.25....what did he run at the combine? 4.68
They claim baby Vick is faster then Micheal Vick, yeah right..
I'd go with Darrel Green & Bob Hayes..
Deion use to toy with WR and QB's..he'd let them get open and just use his burst to snatch the ball...

yes, lots of teams fudge the 40 times. i once saw the "formula" some nfl team used when it released 40 times. it was something like an average of 3 runs then subtract 2/10 or some bullshit like that. you really think there are a TON of high school blue chip prospects running 4.3 and even 4.2s. it's all bullshit. watch some highly touted d lineman or linebacker that supposedly runs a 4.4, the next time they pick up a fumble or interception. most look like they're in slow mo compared to everone else.

Like all my old friends from high school,
Earvin Parker - Former #1 100 Meter Dash in the nation in highschool when he was a senior..he ran in the 4'4s when he was a freshmen and by the time he was a senior, they timed him around 4.37's....
This is a guy who was runnin 10.1-10.3's in High School in the 100 meter dash..
What do you think it would translate if so called 40 times by Vick(4.18) and Kevin Jones(4.25) ran 100 Meter Dashes....
Exactly.....Too many coaches and staff lie about 40 times..
I think Deion actually ran a true 4.28 - 40
Randall Williams(former cowboy player) was pretty fast too, but really sucked at football :p

But didnt Bob Hayes run in the 9.xx in the 100 Meter dash?
