With ESPN running this USC vs. all the teams of the ages, where does that rank UT if (err, scratch that) WHEN they win????

Interesting comment. Seems that I remember a certain Buckeye team playing that Miami unit. After the UT/OSU game earlier this year, Tressel said the only team he had ever seen that even could compare to the speed that UT has is that Miami team. Let's hope it's enough speed to contain Mr. Bush.

if they win, UT would eclipse OU's 2000 BCS title team as the best Big 12 team ever, not sure how they rate all time though.

I would say that this years UT team has a better offense then OU's 2000...but there Defense is not even close to OU's..

Speaking of OU in 2000, Josh Heupel is returning back to OU to replace wack ass Chuck Long :D

there was a write up in the paper & the offensive #'s are damn close, I think UT actually edges OU on most of them.

Wilson actually is taking over the offensive coordinator position.(he was co-offensive cor. last season)

Trojans are 34-0.

If/When they beat Texas only OU will have had a longer winning streak in the past 48 years (OU had 47).

So, no one is hanging on anyone's jock strap. USC deserves everything that is coming their way.

When Texas goes 34-0 and are competing for a national championship and ESPN doesn't do some shows about them then you can talk shit.

The Trojans are the biggest thing in the second-largest media market in the country. Everything doesn't revolve around Texas football.

Take a plane trip out of the state once and awhile.

I know talent is much more spread out college wise nowadays... but what really gets me is that ESPN isn't even talking about the team that USC has still yet to pass on the alltime consecutive win list.... Matter of fact they would have to go undefeated and win the title NEXT year just to get to that mark.

USC is a great team and will go down as one of the all time great runs, but there are still a solid 5 teams that could be just as good if not better on any given day.

I wish ESPN would see a little further past the USC hoopla and give fair credit to other great programs out there that were before the day and age of mass media and ESPN.

Thats what scares me, after the Rosebowl, USC will still be good, but not great.
Dont want them beating OU's winning streak.

There offense will still be deadly, assuming Lendale White returns...

QB: Booty
RB: White
WR: Jarett
WR: Steve Smith
WR: Patrick Turner

Probably most of the players on OU's streak team are about dead now. The entire state of Oklahoma probably doesn't even make the top 100 media markets. The fact that USC is only one undefeated season and two national championships away from the longest undefeated streak just adds to the hype.

Let the Trojans have their day until someone beats them they will gain all the media attention. Until they lose everyone will be focused on "is this the game they lose?"

UT has a chance to take all the media attention away from USC next month and have all the hype all next year.

All they have to do is stop the Trojans.

I've been to college games all around the country and have to say the USC games are some of the most boring games from a fan perspective/school perspective (although the one I attended USC/UCLA 1998, so I wasn't part of the recent hype).

I agree... but just cause they are all dead doesn't make them void from any discusion on the subject.

Every team they have been talking about and comparing has been within the past decade.

That would be like doing a best of college basketball and leaving out UCLA and John Wooden.

And really... I'm not taking anything away from USC. They are an amazing program and have had a fairly unprecedented run... I just think there are some other teams throughout history that are getting the shaft from our up-to-the-split-second mass media.

Heck even UT has had a top 5 run in the history of the game... no mention of that anywhere even with comparison to the UT team of today.

If UT wins everyone will just point at everything USC may have done wrong in the game and shaft UT for being a great team.

If USC wins everyone will just say they are the greatest ever.

Not exactly a win/win scenario for anyone in UT's position.

How is what I said whining again??

I would say the same thing if ANY team was playing USC.

My little end of my previous post was just to point out that ANY team in UT's position is going to get the same flack. If UT wins it will most likely be considered a fluke and instead of praise for UT unseating USC I'm sure we will get plastered with everything USC did to LOSE the game instead of praise for the winner.

Don't take just the fact that I'm a Texas fan into the equation here. You can insert any team you would like and the outcome both leading up to the game and after the game (win or lose) will probably be the same.

Again, this isn't meant to take away from what USC has done. I thought Bush clearly deserved the Heisman in the long run. I think that what USC has done in this day of such diverse athletic talent across the country is amazing. All of this coming from a 'whiny texas fan'. I just personally feel as if the sports media is forgetting a massive part of the history of the game and just focusing on what has been done over the past decade or so. If you disagree then that's cool... that's what sports debates are all about. But you don't have to label me as something... I'm making a fairly valid point here.

Funny thing is that you still can't debate the point at hand in this topic, and seeing as how you can't seem to grasp the points I have made about my disagreement with ESPN calling USC the greatest team ever I guess there's just no sense in continuing with you... since you will once again skip right over the points I have made throughout this thread and label me once again. you still don't get it do you??

This thread is about USC being the greatest ever and the lack of media coverage talking about other teams throughout history.

Yet somehow you STILL think I'm complaining about UT not getting enough coverage. When all I have done was talk about what I believe is happening now and what will happen after the game win or lose would be happening to anyone in the same position. If ND was undefeated and playing USC coming in with a 19 game win streak would you think that worthy of being at least somewhat on par with a decent comparison to a great team of the recent past??

Again, because you still can't seem to get past the fact that i am a texas fan... I think the sports media outlets have allready given all hopes and prayers to USC even before they play the game Vs. Texas or (Insert any opponent you want here). I have NEVER seen such a bandwaggon as the USC one that rides every sportcenter. And if you want to call them the best ever then fine... do that... but please stop comparing them to teams that have only been within the past decade (Ohio State & Miami). There's over 100 years of football history and sometimes ESPN acts as if everything meaningful has only happened within thier 'Sportscenter Era'

How about these teams getting some coverage.

OU 1955-57 & 1973-74
Nebraska 1971
Notre Dame 1947-49

Can you see now that this isn't all about Texas yet?? It's called a debate on a topic. And no, i can find more meaningfull ways to spend my money than on a simple sports game I have completely no control over.

Re-read the topic...

'Best Ever' are the key words you might want to check out

1. Trojans haven't lost a game since Sept, 2003. It took three overtimes for Cal to beat them. Without it that loss, the Trojans would be 46-0. As it is they are 45-1. If it wasn't for the Cal loss, they'd be looking to tie Oklahoma's record in January.

2. In those 45 victories, only 5 were decided by less than a touchdown.

3. 33 of those victories were decided by more than 20 points.

4. 1 National Championship, one co-National Championship, and one upcoming.

5. For the first time ever, 2 Heisman Trophy winners will be playing on the same team for a National Championship.

6. USC has beaten 16 ranked opponents it has faced (ND, ASU, UCLA, Cal multiple times... Michigan, VT, Oklahoma, Oregon)

That, my UT homer, are the facts you may want to check out.

davidaustin
12-23-2005, 06:00 PM
I know the facts... and again it seems to slip your mind that I have never said they weren't worthy... but if you are going to call them the best ever then compare them to teams in thier league...

NOT Ohio State or Miami... or any other team within the ESPN era aka the past decade

OK, Homer, we'll go through your list:

1. Nebraska 1971 - Possibly the third best single season team behind the 1972 USC Trojans and the 1995 Cornhuskers (although the 89 Hurricanes may be the third best)

2. Notre Dame 47-49 - The best two year run in college football. Although Oklahoma 55-56 and Nebraska 94-95 would have been better.

3. OU 55-57 - I'm hoping you meant 55-56, since the sooners finished only 4th and lost to the unranked ND team to kill their win streak.

Hopefully you don't imagine any of these teams could actually win against USC 2005.

But lets take a look at OUs undefeated run compared to USC's (which I posted above).

1. 1953 - played 2 ranked teams (9-1-1)
2. 1954 - played 3 ranked teams although non higher than 10 (10-0)
3. 1955 - played 3 ranked teams
4. 1956 - played no ranked teams
5. 1957 - played 3 ranked teams

So USC put their undefeated record up against 16 ranked opponents, OU 11 times. Advantage USC

No Heisman winners during OU's run. Advantage USC.

Oklahoma enjoyed two National Championships during the run. USC will eventually enjoy 3 (ok, for the UT homers, 2 1/2). Soon to be advantage USC.

The two greatest all-time college football programs are Notre Dame and USC. Oklahoma in the top 5, Huskers and Longhorns in the top 10.

Wow... I didn't think you had anything real to say. That's why we debate... to share opinions... I'm fairly unbiased when it comes to discussing anything having to do with Texas... but I personally still think that USC certainly isn't as dominant as they were in 03 and 04. That is why aside from thier record I don't think they are the best team ever. Just a personal opinion... why are you so easily edged when it comes to any post having to do with the word Texas?? I didn't continue this as a pissing match because frankly these discussions other than sheer record numbers in a stat book can never be proven cause none of these teams will ever have the chance to play one-another with speed/technology unbiasedness for the new vs. old squads, but it's still fun to hear other peoples opinions without retorting to cheap shots...

Personally I think that you, along with the rest of the nation could honestly care less if this game is even played. After all you've pretty much handed the trophy over allready. Would you feel the same way if a school was say on a 30W win streak?? My question regarding the media hype that you so blatently called me a 'whiner' about was a pretty valid agruement when it comes down to it. If UT loses they suck and USC is the best ever and if UT wins they are a fluke during USC's run. Do you disagree?? Cause the way the media ranks USC 05 the game is nothing more than a 60 min formality on the road to immortality. Not exactly fair when it comes to the other team which boasts a pretty darn good record itself. Call me a whiner, homer, whatever you want... I think that is biasedness at the highest level and I don't really agree with it. Nuff said.

Nice to call me a homer... where did you go to school again?? I would hope by your 'homer' comments it's USC... but I gather it's more along the lines of you just don't like Texas... but hey whatever, doesn't really matter it's not even what this discussion was about in the first place.

Actually as long as USC wins by 7 or more points I'm happy.

That gives me some insurance on and as long as the game doesn't fit the middle I make money.

As far as schools, I went to SWTSU, played during the early 80s.

As far as jumping on anyone all it takes is a quick tour through the sports forum over the past 18 months. Homerism is well in effect for UT fans (Hook 'Em really isn't a homer and the dude can quote UT football like no other). But when you have *fans* asking when UT plays on Saturday (their bye week) a few times you realize the majority on this site are bandwagoners.

Just look at all the shit posted about USC over the past few weeks on here. 100% unfounded. The current USC team, after a win at the Rose Bowl (yep I'm handing it to them, in fact, I have quite a bit on it), will go down as one of the best 3 year team in college football history.

I do have some solid ties to USC and certainly would send my children there if they so chose to go there.

I'm much more a fan of college football than a fan of any one team. But if I had to choose one team I'd probably go with ND since, well, I'm Irish and its about the only thing we could watch on TV on Saturday afternoon in the house. My dad played for OSU in the 50s and I grew up in a football household (3 boys, 3 HS football players, 2 college footballl players)

That's cool... and I hope you don't just automatically bundle me with the group who shamefully asks (esp on a public forum) when 'thier team' plays. You should know that plain and simple. And although I went and grad. from UT I also know when and how to give other teams thier complete due credit.

I think that if UT's run had taken place when USC isn't on the path to setting all-time records then it would look much greater than its getting credit for. I'd be bitter for any team that had to walk into a game with a 19 game win streak against some pretty solid teams and be treated like it's over before you walk on the field. It's just not good sportsmanship IMO.

And of course I will always support my school, but on the flip side I'm also not going to walk off of a cliff if Mack Brown said I needed to for them to win a game. There's a difference in support and blind faith.

I think the game will be a very close game with the winner pulling it out on a final drive or deep into the 4th. In which case both teams prove thier might with oneanother.

I just wish this game was a little more about #1 vs. #2 than USC vs. whoever cause it doesn't matter. :)

Take a plane trip out of the state once and awhile.Did Earl Campbell turn down an autograph request for you or somethin'? Why do you hate Ut so bad? I'll ask you again..........who is your favorite college football team?

Actually as long as USC wins by 7 or more points I'm happy.

That gives me some insurance on and as long as the game doesn't fit the middle I make money.

As far as schools, I went to SWTSU, played during the early 80s.

As far as jumping on anyone all it takes is a quick tour through the sports forum over the past 18 months. Homerism is well in effect for UT fans (Hook 'Em really isn't a homer and the dude can quote UT football like no other). Actually, I had the over in the game and lost. Such is life. 62-48 in the NBA this year for a 56% win rate. NBA is my worst capping.

Historically that is what UT fans want, a close one. Since 1995 (talking BCS alliance bowl structure) only three times has the national title been decided by 17 points or less. Each of those times it was the dog that won.

In bowls across the last 30 years when the dog gets 7 or more points are 102-67 against the number. The 7 or more dogs last year were 5-2.

Talking with someone this afternoon they told me alot of large bets are moving with UT ("smart money"). The line may see -9 before moving back though. Looks like the bookies are hoping for a close one (FG or less) and are looking to trap the middle.

I agree USC is built way up by ESPN. They are good but Texas is way better statistically. They have a better defense and offense.

ESPN will be eating a BUNCH of Crow as well as alot of guys on here after Texas brings the wood to USC.
