Even though I'm a KC Chiefs fan, I think I'm gonna have to go with John Elway. He could throw, run and had great leadership. Pretty much everyone else could just throw, beside Steve Young. But I don't think he's in the same league as J. Elway.
For purely passing, I'd go with Dan Marino.
For leadership, Joe Montana

Randall Cunningham...oh wait I didn't read where versatility didn't count.

Montana because as far as all around goes, HE'S AN ALL AROUND WINNER!!! Running, passing, or any other qualities are great for a QB, but bottom line is that he has 1 job -- WIN!!! There has been none better than Joe. Others had better size, stronger arms, ran, etc., but no one was better at being an all around winner.

Gotta go with Favre here....I don't think I have seen anyone display such a love for a game and play through some of the hardships that he has. I just don't think there has ever been another like him that has played with that kind of class.

I'd have to agree.............Favre has the most consecutive games played, plays with heart and determination.

Peyton Manning who? He doesnt have near the time, the yards, the superbowls etc.......

As much as I've always hated the 49ers...I still have to say Montana overall.

Aikman, Elway and Favre are pretty close, but if I was creating an all-time perfect squad...Montana would be at the helm.

as for what a qb does there has been no better than marino, maybe unitas(sp?), but as for passing, being able to read D's. as a runner he wasn't much of anything but damn if you had the hardest time trying to sack him. all he would do is take two steps up, back or to the side. it not for the strike farve would still be chasing marino for starts in a row. now elway is another good one. but if you want to use just wins, then I think otto grahm would have to be everybodys guy, didn't he win something like 6 or 7 titles in a row?

I think it was 7 in a 10 year period...late 40's to early 50's. 3 titles were NFL and the others were AAFL or what ever they called it. I didn't even think of him. Cleveland was rolling back then. Good choice.

I disagree. Marino never won the big one and he's in my top 5 of all time. Most would agree with me on that one.

I'm going with Elway for the best ever. His stats reflect that.

That's a very ignorant thing to say. You can't judge someone for not making it to the big game. Dan Marino is one of the best quarter backs ever, PERIOD. His stats, leadership ability, and pure athletic ability speak for themselves.

So I guess Marino's name needs to come off that list too because he never got a ring. A ring doesn't make you a good QB. If the ring theory was true then I guess Doug Williams was a badass QB.

i like manning, but he is barely old enough to shave, lol. wait till he has got the years behind him like brett favre and the big big hits, lets see how good he continues to be. you cant judge someone by their "potential". Hell, Ryan Leaf was supposed to be the next-greatest-thing, and look what happened to that guy?

I got to see Joe Montana play in KC, and even then in his twilight years, he still could display some intense leadership moments. I pick him.

There are a couple names not on the list that are pretty big too, namely stauback (spelling) and bradshaw, but ill not get into that.

In your list, Montana. In pre-1978 NFL, Johnny Unitas.

The rules were changed in 1978 (year before Montana made his debut) to open of the passing game. Offensive holding was a little harder to call, receivers couldn't be bumped after 5 yds, etc.

NFL has some strange and I think dumb rules. I found this and was looking...http://www.steelersfever.com/nfl_history_of_rules.html

1995: The emergency (third) quarterback may now enter the game in just the fourth quarter, regardless if the other two quarterbacks are able to play. This means that if the third string quarterback enters the game, the first and/or second quarterback may re-enter, unlike the past two seasons where the emergency quarterback would only play off the first two were unable to resume play.

I figured it would be like basketball. if a coach wanted to play the 3rd stringer put him in. I dont see what the deal is about restricting players like this.
