AUSTIN (AP) -- Police said Friday they are investigating separate cases of assault and robbery downtown that investigators believe may have been committed by people in the University of Texas athletic program.
Police would not identify the suspects, say how many are being investigated or if they are members of the second-ranked Longhorns football team, which is scheduled to play top-ranked Southern California in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4.
Three Austin television stations reported that the suspects are football players. No charges have been filed.
Athletic department spokesman Nick Voinis said school officials were evaluating the information. "We can't comment at the moment," he said.
According to police, the incidents occurred Sept. 4 and Dec. 10 and that a handgun was used in one of them.
Austin police spokesman Kevin Buchman said his office issued the statement after receiving several inquiries from the news media. He said police would not release more information.
Ramonce Taylor and Cedric Griffin are two of them.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin police say they are investigating two separate cases of assault and robbery in downtown Austin that involve members of the Texas athletic department.
The incidents occurred Sept. 4 and Dec. 10. No charges have been filed, and names of those being investigated have not been released.
Texas acknowledged the investigation Friday night, and athletic director DeLoss Dodds released the following statement:
"We were surprised by the APD release of allegations concerning one or more of our student-athletes. We have followed up on the rumors that we are hearing and spoken with the two student-athletes who are alleged to be under investigation. Within the limited time we had this evening, we have gathered as much information as possible. Based upon what we know at this time we have no reason to believe that the University or the athletic department need to take any action. We will continue to monitor the matter, and we will cooperate fully with those who are conducting the investigation."
Although Austin police and the University of Texas have not identified the individuals under investigation, attorney Ken Oden confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday night that cornerback Cedric Griffin is one of the people being investigated.
"I have agreed to advise Cedric Griffin although no criminal charges have been filed against him. He is the subject of an investigation -- and I stress it is an investigation," Oden told Schad. "I believe no charges will be filed against him. They're saying this is assault and robbery, and it sounds hideous, but this is a trash-talking incident on the street involving Cedric and that's it. I know this is a big game and they're focused on it. But in fairness to Cedric, this was nothing more than a verbal incident in as much as it involves Cedric."
The No. 2 Longhorns are scheduled to play top-ranked Southern California in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4 for the Bowl Championship Series title.
Griffin has been invited to the Senior Bowl, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Kevin Buchman, an Austin police spokesman, said his office issued its statement after receiving inquiries from the media. He said police would not release more information.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Somebody probably lost a poker game and got their feelings hurt. Big deal. Unless there is actual/factual truth about the allegations then its hearsay. Looks like little Mathew & company got upset about his picture getting posted on the net and had to dig something up.

2. Griffin and RT were involved in a shouting/shoving match on 6th street. But hey, it is a slow news day.....

Yeah and Elvis is still alive, whatever, LOL. Hey check out this ESPN headline, "Texas cornerback part of assault, robbery probe" . Go to this link and read a little http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2263160. I guess because no charges have been filed then it is all bullshit right? I guess the police should never have to actually investigate, they should have all the details down the first day? That burnt orange glow in yours eyes is starting to dim a little with this type of shit coming tu's way prior to the big game, LOL. I wonder does the T in UT stand for Thug, LOL.

If thats what you want to think, be my guest. I've talked to people "in the know," and I know pretty much what happened.
Tell me something, do you know the difference between "investigation" and "Arrest"?
Do you think if there was anything to this, they wouldnt have been picked up?
Houston waved a gun in some kind of 6th street altercation earlier this year.....he was advised he basically was done at Texas....he's had ONE carry since then, agaisnt Bayluh late in the 4th.
Griffin and RT.......
Were walking home from 6th, and some group started in on them......it was a shouting/pushing match. Try to save what little cred you have left, and drop it. There was no robbery, no nothing.....some little pencil necked geek wanted his two minutes, and waited till this week to do so.
The beauty of it?
Now Mack gets to circle the wagons, and play the us against them card.
Incidentally, why didnt u post about the USC LB who was ARRESTED for assault this week?
btw....hypocrisy sucks. Where do u get off railing him for dismissing this, as you throw up the "it's under investigation" flag, and in the same post, you condemn them as guilty, when you just said....it's being "investigated?"
A little consistency is all I'm asking.

Michael Houston is the cat that may actually be in trouble...no big, since he's had no carries since the BU game, in which he had 3 for 5 or some such.
Griffin issued an apology to the "victim" and he's happy.
Ramonce Taylor probablly popped off, when he shoulda kept walking. He came up a bit street so...who knows. Basically, it was a slow news night.

it all boils down to a shouting match on 6th street of all places... is this really a big deal?? Some guy wants his name on ESPN and the news cause he blows up a story that really was just a small shouting match and some pushing and shoving.
fan or no fan this is just a stupid pissing match between two guys that were prob drunk on 6th and the only reason we are talking about it is cause one side of the story invovles two football players.

Sounded a little more than a shouting match.
Several football players from The University of Texas are being investigated by the Austin Police Department for robbery by assault, according to sources close to the investigation.
APD has confirmed that the investigation centers around people involved with the UT Athletics Department.
The investigation stems from two incidents on Sept. 4 and December 10.
....................
According to police, the incidents were an alleged armed robbery with an automatic handgun on Sept. 4 and assault and attempted robbery on Dec. 10.
Although Austin police and the University of Texas have not identified the individuals under investigation, attorney Ken Oden confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday night that cornerback Cedric Griffin is one of the people being investigated.

My resource(my wife's uncle is lawyer & graduted from UT Law) says it's too early to make any conclusions right now. Most likely it's just someone trying to stir up some shit. I tend to agree, I mean in these situations you never hear anything until bowl season gets close. Just someone trying to get some pub for something that may have happened months ago!
