The airbag jacket for motorcycling

December 14, 2005 Motorcyclists have long been the most vulnerable road users because they do not have an effective barrier between themselves and other objects in an accident. A flurry of activity in motorcycle protective gear could change things. Honda recently and showed its first air-bag on a motorcycle (http://showed%20its%20first%20air-bag%20on%20a%20motorcycle%3c/a%3E%3C/u%3E%3C/font%3E%3C/a%3E%3Ca%20href=%22http://www.gizmag.com.au/go/4744/%22%20target=%22_blank%22%3E%3Cfont%20color=%22Bla ck%22%3E%3Cu%3E%3Ca%20href=%22http://%3C/a%3E%3C/u%3E%3C/font%3E%22%20target=%22_blank%22%3E%20%3C/a%3E%3C/u%3E%3C/font%3E%3C/a%3E%3Ca%20href=%22http://www.gizmag.com.au/go/4744/%22%20target=%22_blank%22%3E%3Cfont%20color=%22Bla ck%22%3E%3Cu%3E%3Ca%20href=%22http://%3C/a%3E%3C/u%3E%3C/font%3E%22%20target=%22_blank%22%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/u%3E%3C/font%3E%3C/a%3E%3Ca%20href=%22http://manufacturers%20are%20developing%22%20target=%22_b lank%22%3Emanufacturers%20are%20developing%3C/a%3E)manufacturers are developing (http://manufacturers%20are%20developing/) a cross between the airbag and a protective jacket designed to protect the motorcycle rider's neck and spine in the event of an accident. One of the first to market with the new design is Airprotek which sells a range of jackets and vests featuring airbag technology designed to keep riders safe and comfortable in a wide range of driving and climatic conditions. The jackets are already in use by police departments in Brazil, Italy, Japan and Spain and appear to offer significantly greater protection than a normal jacket. The inflatable vests are finding application in many other potentially dangerous activities such as horseriding and power sports.

All Airprotek (http://www.hit-air.com/english/main.html) jackets and vests incorporate the "Hit-Air" airbag safety system designed to protect the rider's neck, spine and vital organs in the event of a fall or collision. The "Hit Air" jacket uses CE certified armor to protect the shoulders, elbows and the spine but most importantly, the "Hit Air" jacket also incorporates an air cushion system. In the event of an accident and a rider is thrown from the motorcycle, the air cushion instantly inflates (within 1/2 second) to protect the rider's body.

Activation is simple and automatic. A coiled wire is attached to both the motorcycle and the jacket. Once the rider and the motorcycle are separated, the coiled wire pulls a "key" out of a gas release system and inert gas inflates the air cushion. The inflated jacket provides the necessary impact protection. After a few seconds the gas is automatically released through the gas release valve. Once the gas is released a new cartridge can be installed and the jacket is ready for reuse.

Anthony Cisneros, President of Associated Partners, the exclusive sales rep for the company, stated, "In November, Airprotek's products received significant attention from retailers, distributors and consumers at the Las Vegas Big Twin show. At the Indy show we plan to make several announcements concerning distribution agreements and private label partnerships with leading companies in the Powersports industry."

Eiichiro Hemmi, CEO of Airprotek International, stated, "Our production facilities and component suppliers in South Korea, Japan and Vietnam are ramping up to meet the strong projected demand for Airprotek's products in 2006."

Airprotek will exhibit its product lineup at the 2006 International Powersports Dealer Expo (http://www.dealerexpo.com/) in Indianapolis, February 18-20, 2006.

It would sick to buy new gear if you fall or wreck. But then again road rash is a bitch.

It the event that you ever take a truely nasty dive, you should allways replace your gear period
