Hadn't ridden the bike in close to two weeks because of my work schedule and the weather. Nothing sucks more than riding home 35 miles in 40º weather, wearing a fully perforated leather jacket, and working a 13 hour day. So I haven't ridden much lately. Anyway, so it's been a couple of weeks since I've ridden and the temps were going to be warm today and I was only work 4 hours so I decided to ride. Had to gas up halfway to work and filled up at a gas station over by DFW.
Anyway, all was fine on the way to work. I started having problems on the way home. Had to run some errands and got stuck in traffic (go figure on a Saturday afternoon) and I started noticing a surging that hadn't been there before and only seemed to be happening at low speeds and RPM (I didn't notice anything on the highway). So no big deal and I ignored it. Jumping onto the highway and I got on it and I got a loud backfire that has never happened before. Wow! Scared a couple of cars around me. Got off the highway and noticed the surging a little more pronounced (or maybe I was paying more attention). Ran a couple of more errands and met up with some friends.
Well on the way home I ran across a Dodge SRT-10 fucking with me wanting to race. So we got on it a couple of times and I beat him easily. Third try and I caught myself in the wrong gear and downshift a couple and hit it, shiftlight came on and shifted, light came on again and I shifted and I got a loud backfire again. Pulled up to the light and the bike died. I could keep her running but I have to rev it up to do so.
What the fuck did I do? I'm hoping it's bad gas or something since I noticed her acting weird with the surging earlier in the afternoon. FUCK!!!!!! At least it's Winter and I've been working to many hours to really enjoy the bike but dayum this has me worried :(

I dunno but after I got on my bike after sitting a while it runs crappy when you first start but after it warms up a lil its fine. Might have some water in the gas.

Did it start acting up after you added gas?

Yes, and that's why I'm thinking (hoping) it's bad gas.

I think we've been thru this with your bike, but did you have the coil packs replaced yet?

If it was a coil pack it would be a considerable difference in power, basically sounds like it's running on 2-3 cylinders....which is exactly what it would be doing. Maybe the plugs are bad?? or maybe bad gas, but I put 89 in my ZX10 one time just to see if it would run worse and to be honest it felt like it ran better........go figure. ;)

I was noticing it then to but didn't think to much of it, just a slight stumble on acceleration only on the lower RPM's.

Well I was planning on changing the plugs so I've got a set already. Is there any kind of gas treatment to remove water from the tank?

I know there's something to keep water from forming while it's being stored but i dont know if water is already in there. I might try some octane booster if I were you, can'y hurt just dont put the whole thing in there.

Buy some HEET...its supposed to get water out of the gas. I got bad gas the other day in my car and I bought a bottle of that and a bottle of gas treatment and it fixed the problem. Also try puting some "Sta-Bil" in your gas while its sitting around during the winter. Good luck.

This time of year it's a good idea when you bike is parked for awhile to make sure the tank is full. It reduces the chances of condensation in the tank. Add some octane boost or some Lucus the next time you ride it.

Weird. It's half time of the Cowboy game and I figured I would go out and see how much gas is left in the tank and start her up. Well surprise, it's idling and revving fine. Gonna take her out for a short ride and and hopefully run her low on gas. Has me wondering if its the coils or the Power Commander :(

I remember when my packs on my '03 R6 went bad, it ran like shit at low RPM/idle, but if I got on it, it would run almost like normal.

Hmmmm... That would explain the intermittent problem.

Have the coil packs been replaced? If not, call around tomorrow or Tuesday (some dealers arent open Mon.) and see if they have any coil packs in stock for an '03 R6. Tell them the problem you are having. It's not a full recall, just a TSB. They will look at it for free and if the problem you are having is the coil packs then they will replace for free. I took my R6 to Stadium Yamaha at 11am and had it back by 4pm. Who says "free" work doesnt get done fast?

Not mine (Jose's), and it was all of a sudden and it did it till it was fixed. You might want to go and ask the dealer if all of them were replaced, I can't rememeber if they just replaced one of them or all of them when I took it in. I took it Motion and Tad did the work.
