I've been listening to a right wing christian station a little here & there. It's 91.7, from 2-3PM they have a talk show(it'a all talk anyway) called "point of view".

Today the commentator said that Europe was dying because of low birth rates, which was caused because they had become a secular, non christian society. He predicted that in 50 years Europe would be a less densly populated continent of old people, few of which had brother or sisters. He went on the say that the Soviet Union also fell because they weren't christians and that caused low birth rates too. The Soviet union folded because they went broke!!

Since when do you have to be a christian to have kids? Tell that to the Chinese and Indians(with populations of 2 billion and 1 billion)!!!!!!!

Same guy also said a few days ago that a liberal COULD NOT be a christian. Lets all sign with the Republican National Commitee, and the NRA so we can all be christians......then we can have kids!!!

I think the decline in population in Europe, Japan and the greying of America is due to our success, economically and health wise.

Economically wise, rich people have less children and poor people have more of them. Which is backwards the way it should be.

I have a friend for Vietnam, he told me that families are much bigger in his country because most people in the country side don't have electricity and TVs. So, when the sun goes down, what else is there to do except to make babies.

I remember hearing about NY having an exponential increase in birthrates 9 months after the blackout that was back in the 60's I believe.

WTW, I am a practicing Christian. I did not hear the program you are referencing. If the speaker did indeed state those things in that context, they were obviously wrong. You are right in your assessments. There are always extremists available to discredit the true loyalists to any following; religeous or secular. Look at the "Muslim terrorists" (self proclaimed) who are being denounced by the regular Muslims.
Also liberal does not mean opposite of Republican. Rudy Juliani is a liberal Republican. He likes abortion and fiscal responsibility. I do not know if he claims to be a Christian.
The Bible tells us how we should act and also says that we will answer for our own actions to God and no one else (unless an action is against the local laws).

The birth rate here in the US has gone down as well... I don't see the logic behind being Christian and having kids and how they go hand and hand... huh....

Another paradox in this country: The rich are (usually) thin and the poor are (usually) fat.

Not entirely true. The United States and most of developed Europe have birth rates below 2.1 which is the standard to maintain a population level, Italy's is 1.7 for example, lowest in the world. This is due to over crowding and lack of economic opportunities. It is much more stressful on a family to feed 3 kids as opposed to 1, and to take care of 3 set of old people in stead of 1.

In reference to Vietnam, my most recent girlfriend is Vietnamese, and both of her parents families were large 10+ kids. It has nothign to do with lack of electricity, it has to do with undeveloped or developing countries mostly being agricultural. Many hands make light work. Once a child becomes old enough, they help in the family farm. Usually this means the child drops out of school and knows no beeter life than that of a farmer.

It doesn't only matter what the birth rate is at, it also has to do with age expecdancy. Italy's birth rate is the lowest due to over crowding? No kids being born in Tokyo or Bejing?

That wasn't the only thing my coworker said. Yes, many hands do help when it comes to agricultural economy but also in their society children take care of their parents when they become elderly, unlike in the USA when we pack them in to retirement homes.

It's funny I just did some research on this very subject:

The Total Fertility Rate for China is 1.64 and in the USA it is 2.06. China's population is growing, but not as fast as it once was. This is based on Age Specific Fertility Rate of females aged 15-49 of a 5 year period from 2000-2005 (yes I understand 2005 is not completed but it is projected and then aggregate).

Now based on population of 2000:

China has
24.8% of its population under the age of 15
68.4% between 15-64
6.8% over the age of 65

The United States:

21.6% under 15
66.1% 15-64
12.3% 65+

Average life expectancy is 77.3 - 71.5 USA over China.

One thing to consider, The male:female ratio in China is 1.06:1
Here in The United States it is .97:1 (more females than males)

Go to http://esa.un.org/unpp/index.asp and play around with the data if you like.

China is a distortion in birth rates and genter ratios.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-child_Policy

China's one child policy had lead to hidden births, gender selective abortions, increases in infanticide especially for baby girls and child abandanment.

Not only that, but there are forced late term abortions and forced sterilizations. Crazy shit man! But in Viet'Nam it's more of a cultural thing not an electricity issue;).

That's Marlon Mattox's show. I've listened to his show before and I got the feeling that he was "out there" just a little bit, kind of like Pat Robertson.

It is true that Europe has become a secular, non christian society. The rest of what he said seems a little "off".

The muslims are quietly settling in europe and over time I expect that the "old world" of europe will begin to fall away to the "new world" of europen islam.
