View Full Version : Why was Jesus white?

Just a question. Why do christians perceive Jesus as a white male? If Jesus actually was white, then why? Is God racist? Did he put Jesus on Earth as a white guy to better fit in? If he was going to die anyways, why didn't he just set him down in some poor ass African tribe or in a teepee as an American Indian or somewhere in Asia as a ninja? Did Jesus only die for the white mans sins?

Jesus was black, or at the least, brown. He's depicted as white, most likely because early on, the church did not want to have his skin color being associated with that of Muslims, and white is symbolically "pure".

I know a black man who is a member of a church that teaches blacks were God's chosen people. So Jesus was black, as were all the apostles. In fact he claims that the people who are today known as "Jews" are imposters, and are actually "Edomites", and "stole" the identity as "God's chosen people" right after Jesus's death. He says the proper term for God's Chosen one's are Israelites, not
"Jews" or "Israelis".
He also points out that the Israelites were supposed to be the ministers of the world, and when they strayed, God punished them saying they would never have a homeland, would harvest crops they could not eat, live in lands of foreign tongues, etc(IE slavery).
It's safe to say that Jesus was not the fair skinned, light brown hair, almost efeminate looking person of popular depiction.

I've never ask that question...but i've wondered.....would he wear a pinky ring...would he drive a fancy car...would his wife wear furs and diamonds, would his dressing room have a star...if he came back tomorrow...there's something i'd like to know, could you tell me would Jesus wear a rolex on his television show?

Would Jesus be political if He came back to earth?
Have His second home in Palm Springs, yeah, a try to hide His worth?
Take money, from those poor folks, when He comes back again,
and admit He's talked to all them preachers who say they been a talkin' to Him?
Lord have mercy, Just ask ya' self, Would He wear a pinky ring,
Would He drive a fancy car?
Would His wife wear furs and diamonds, would His dressing room have a star?
If He came back tomorrow, well there's somethin' I'd like to know:
Could ya tell me, would Jesus wear a Rolex,
Would jesus wear a Rolex
Would Jesus wear a Rolex
On His television show-ooh-ooh?

So he wouldn't be white? Why is he depicted as a white male? It's not just protestant churches either. The catholic church does the same thing. Thanks for providing an answer to the question.

Jesus is definaltley not white, he was a Jew living in and around Palestine 2000 yrs ago. His skin whould have been darker then whats depicted by some. This is a very mute point though, the body was a vessel for was inside....it wouldn't mattered if he was yellow or purple or green.
He first and foremost came to bring salvation to the Jews, God's choosen people, then the Gentiles(which is me and you). He died for all on all corners of the globe.

All corners of the globe? Might want to re-think that. Also, it obviously does matter what color his skin is to the christian church. If it didn't, they would depict him as a dark skinned male.

I would imagine more than likely when Michealangelo was commissioned to paint the Sistine Chapel. Though it could've been earlier, there's really not much early christian artwork readily available to try and determine for sure.

By looking at much of Michelangelo 's works, I see that all of his stuff appeared to be of people with a European look.

Could that he was just doing art of what he imaged it to be? Do you think the church told him to only do a painting of only white people to be judged on the final day? Why not paint in those pesky muslims, burning in fire?

The only church that gives an offical depiction of Christ is the Catholic Church aka...there Crucifix. I am looking at one right now...he looks more like a fair-skinned Jewish man to me.

You used quotes. So you don't know if it was a he or she now? To answer your question though, why not? Look at every picture of Jesus and tell me that does not look like a white man. Just an FYI, fair skinned means white. ;)

He was just doing art of what he imagined, and used his, I believe, brother as the model for Jesus.
The point is, the white anglo looking Jesus has been adopted as the official "look" of Jesus, whether it was at that point, or before I'm not entirely certain. My guess as to why it has been adopted as such, is because he doesn't look Muslim/Middle Eastern. Not hard to think this might be the case, considering the history between Christian's and Muslims.

You still haven't learned to read.
Or do you purposefully take things out of context, in a futile effort to make the other person (in this case, Poopnut2) look foolish? If so, you really should stop, as it only makes you look illiterate.

My belief in Jesus. Jesus was a mere man. No more a son of God than you or I. I believe he died for what he believed was right. Not sent to earth, pre-destined to die for the sins of mankind.
This wasn't really a "Christian vs. Non-Christian" thread. This is a thread asking a legitimate question. One that you've belittled, providing no answer, or a simple "I don't know" without sarcastically asking me the question in an attempt to make it seem like I'm doing this to simply bash the Christian faith.
EDIT: I definately have no phobia of theology. Do you even know what theology is? It doesn't necessarily have to relate to religion, especially any particuliar religion. This forum is commonly mistaken for the "Christians only" forum. Which is sad.

I am not trying to assert that the church did or didn't do any. You are making the assertion that the church did do something. If you can't come up with any other person to support your thesis, then you go ahead and live in your paranoid dilution of conspiracy. I can't make a rational argument against your imagination.

I believe ice cream is good. That doesn't mean that I believe in ice cream. Ice cream has no tenets, save for it being cool tasty treat. Saying that ice cream exists does not mean I believe in ice cream.
"I believe in America", means something totally different than saying, "I know of America".
How do you "believe in" Jesus? Do you study his teaching? Which you could without believing that he is god, muslims do.
You asked a question, fine. I answered it the only way I could. I don't know why, churches do what you asked. My church doesn't have a picture of Jesus or even a sculpture of him on the cross. Why are you asking? Curiosity or bomb throwing?
I never said you were afraid of theology.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theophobia
Theophobia - Fear of gods or religion.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=theology
Theology:
The study of the nature of God and religious truth; rational inquiry into religious questions.
A system or school of opinions concerning God and religious questions: Protestant theology; Jewish theology.
A course of specialized religious study usually at a college or seminary.
BTW, this is a theology forum yes, a christian theology only forum, no. You were the one asking about something in christianity.

I was actually a St. Ann's Catholic Church and they actually had a picture of Christ as a Black Man.....I was also told, if you go to other places in the world, say for instance China...the crucifix would have a Christ that resembled a Chinese man...basically the point being Christ embodies all men depending on who's looking.

I never said that I "know" that Jesus even existed. I do however "believe" that "if" there was a Jesus at all, that he was just a man. Not the son of God, or God himself.
You could say, "I believe that rock is gold." or "I know that rock is gold." Neither has more credibility than the other without actually proving that the rock in question is in fact gold.

The way that I see it is that they didn't have cameras during Jesus' time so technically there's no way of knowing exactly what He looked like. We can only go by what has been found through documentations (i.e. stone tablets, the Bible, scrolls, or what-have-you). Everything reported thus far has depicted Jesus as a Jew. But I agree that it doesn't matter what the color of His skin was. Even if He was striped and had all the colors of the rainbow, I still follow His teachings.
