Here's my problem....When I try to browse with Internet Explorer, 9 times out of 10 I get the "Page not available" or similar. And, it's so slow on page refresh, it's like I'm using a 2400 bps modem from 1989 (I have SBC DSL with 3.0 mps downloads).
Yahoo IM works, AIM works....I've sat with SBC DSL support for 2.5 hours to make sure it's not the connection, modem or router (everything is nice in India BTW).
I've also made sure that my firewalls are turned off (MS Windows XP and Trend Micro are the only ones on there I think).
This started Sunday. The only thing that's happened recently is there was a Windows Update security patch that was installed on Friday. Everything worked fine on Saturday, but went to shit on Sunday. I've even tried unistalling the patch with no luck.
Anyone have a clue what's happening there??
thanks

That's nice that everything is good in India. :D
Have you tried using Firefox to see if it is faster?

I just downloaded Firefox at work (thanks for the link DarkWolf).
See if this works tonight.
Still don't understand why IE would go to crap like that.

I also had SBC DSL and this was happening to me as well. Turned out I was a little to far away from the "C.O." and they were trying to push too much speed through the switch and it couldn't handle it. I started out on 384k download and then upgraded to the 3meg and that's when it started happening exactly the same way as yours. They decreased the speed back to the original 384k and the problem went away. I was able to cancel however without any penalties because of this problem, and just went back to cable, which in my case is more stable and I get 3 meg for the same price.

well, got firefox loaded at lunch and it works better, but still very slow.
I'm probably going to have to start uninstalling shit tonight so see if something is messing with it.
I don't think it's the line...SBC ran a test on the line and it was OK. I've had this connection for a year with no problems.

Check out what opens when you start the computer. Take a peak at the processes that are running in the background. if you see anything out of the ordinary, kill it. might also run spybot and ad-aware for good measure.
I also like taking a look at the Run key in the registry and hacking out anything that is unnecessary.
On a side note, I added a wireless nic to my wifes PC the other day and left the netgear config utility running in the background. That really slowed the machine down.

I'll probably just have someone look at it that knows what they're doing. I'd just assume throw this thing through the window and buy a new one. Computers frustrate me more than women.

Depending on the hardware, that might not be such a bad idea.
Do you know how to bring up task manager? If so, check mem utilization and cpu. It does not take much for an IM to work....when transferring files via an IM...is it as fast as it usually is for you or has it slowed down? Do you have a laptop or desktop you could borrow from someone to try out different hardware?
Have you tried reloading whatever hardware the DSL provider...provided? No known cable problems? When you ping your default gateway, quick times?
Take care,
Chuck

well, I went to the Windows update site and downloaded an update to IE. Seems to have fixed my problem. I'll see how long it lasts.
Thanks
