Has anyone ever heard about the company who was drilling in Siberia and broke thru the earth only to hear screaming voices etc....apparently they had lowered a special mic down this hole, was supppose to help them listen to the plates of the earth...(plate techtonics)...but instead they heard screaming etc...

I have the clip but haven't confirmed the creditablity of the story, and for that matter I really don't know anything about it...chime in if you know.

I just read it all.. In short..

How did this story originate? Again, we will never really know. It is possible that somewhere in the world there has been a spooky experience during deep drilling operations. I don't know. According to an August 1989 article in 'Science' magazine, there is a Russian deep hole drilling project in Kola, near Murmansk, about 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Another German deep drilling experiment in north-east Bavaria has discovered warmer temperatures than were expected at certain drilling levels, although nothing even close to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Characteristic of many urban legends, this story was alleged to have occurred in an obscure part of the world where it would be virtually impossible to track down the facts. And once the story got started, people began quoting one another's newsletters to validate their own. This is the stuff of which tabloid newspapers are made.

That 's what shoot's the bible's credibility in the ass if you ask me. The bible was written by men, and men have biases, agendas, are very falible, and 2000 years ago, knew nothing of the rest of the universe. Not to mention that since the printing press was not invented until the 1400's, there was no such thing as a "standard" bible for the first 1400 years. Bibles were hand written by scribes, and each had minor(sometimes major) variations.

The bible implies we are unique forms of life, apparently superior to anything else since we were "made in god's image". That's why the church insisted for 1700 years that the earth was the physical center of the universe, and "all the heaven's revolved around us". Well the church was wrong, but they did burn a lot people at the stake for saying nonsense like "the earth revolves around the sun".

Now we know the earth is on the outer banks the milky way galaxy. The milky way is an ordinary galaxy with about 200 billion stars, and there are at least a billion galaxies in the observable universe. So if only 1 in a billion of these stars has planets with intelligent life(astronomers have now indentified thousands of stars with planets, mostly nearby), we've got thousands of other intelligent civilizations out there. Are we superior to ALL of them? are we the ONLY one's in god's image?

Now some will say the men who wrote the bible 2000 years ago did not know about all that. Very True, and it confirm's the bible's lack of authenticity. Since God created the universe, he knew of all these other civilizations. And if the bible was written by men supposedly inspired by God, why didn't he tell these men the truth about were we fit in the universe?

IMO the bible is a legend, which is defined as a glorious story loosely based on facts. So how can you base a religion on a legendary text ( the bible) by insisting that text is the true word of GOD, down to the last syllable? There are provable events in the bible, but that does not mean every word is fact.

Historically, every time the church has challenged science, the church lost. That will never change since religion is based on faith (an emotion) and science is based on logic and facts. Yes, science has made many mistakes, but the scientific process invites constant re-evaluation and scrutiny of data, which means science ultimately always self corrects itself.

Whereas religion has few provable facts, it just a book and dogmatic beliefs.

I'm not dissing religion, but I will always take a scientist's word over that of a preacher.

1) copies were taken from the the original stone and scrolls. Stone is very hard to erase and change. The originals are still available. If you know Greek or Hebrew, you can study them for yourself (avoiding the inconsistancies of the undesirable translator.)
2) can you show me in the Bible where it says anything like "the Earth revolves around the sun?" If not then it may have been rambunctious men acting in an effort to prove they still were smarter and more powerful when they were only more powerful. Many people do many things in many names and are complete liars and frauds.
3) until there is some verification about your aliens, then they are just legends
4)How can the church challenge science? They are not in the same arena. Now if you are talking about evolution: "historically", every time there is a real debate about the theory of evolution vs the theory of intelligent design, intelligent design always wins.

1: No, original copies are not available. Originals were destroyed after the scribes had finished copying them. Supposedly to make sure the text was preserved without decay. Funny how "heathen" texts from ancient Egypt are still around today, even on papyrus... yet the holy word of God is supposedly subject to massive decay, and the only way to ensure it's survival was constant re-copying, and then destroying the original/source.

But surely no errors, or changes were ever made :rolleyes:

In otherwords, he's pointing out one of the Church's major mistakes, not the Bible.

Anyway 1) where are these stone tablets?, until 1948 the oldest known biblical texts were written about 200 years after Jesus died. 1948 the Dead Sea scrolls were found, which have been have been dated to about 60 AD.

2) dark wolf mostly covered that. But my point was how horribly flawed interpretation of the bible can be. The bible is written in very broad , at times even vague terms, it can be twisted to say nearly anything.

3) point taken, however the existance of other intelligent life is a mathematical certainity. Mathmatics is the language is science.

4) what proof do you have of intelligent design? The I.D. concept is a simple restating of devine creationism in post Y2K politcally correct terms. Why the smoke screen, if you believe in devine creation, just say so without the psychobable. But proof of evolution is beneath your feet, just dig. Surely your not going to claim that the millions of fossilized bones are ALL fake? Or that dinosaur skeletons are just elephant bones put together in the wrong order?
It's documented that animals change and adapt to thier surroundings. These small changes multiplied by thousands (even milllions) of centuries will result in a creature who does not resemble his ancient ancestor.

How can you stand behind a book that the major church's cannot even agree on what goes in it? The catholic bible has 6 more books than a Baptist bible, and there are at least 6 other biblical books(including the gospel of Mary Magdelane) that were written in the same time frame but left out.

The bible was such a catastrophic mess than in 1611 King James brought together scholars from all over Europe to sort it out, and this was NOT just a simple translation from latin to english, they decided which BOOKs went IN the bible.....and it took them several years to sort it out.

So how can you be SURE it's the EXACT word of God?

Actually Scott, I believe many of the Dead Sea Scrolls found were dated as early as 200 BC. And they match nearly word for word with the same text that we use today.

Heaven and Hell are not physical places, they are spiritual places. It would be cool to think of the center of the earth being hot magma and it really being the lake of fire and brimstone. While heaven really is in the clouds. :D
