Is there any way of knowing your bike will be safe at an apartment besides rolling into your apartment at night? What i guess im sahying is, i live in a second story apartment, which is a no-go on the "bike-inside" thing. Is there some kind of device i can get that will keep it safe while i sleep at night, or if i have to leave it there to go to work or something?

Nothing is garanteed.
Move into a first floor unit or an apartment complex that have garages. Thats about as secure as you can get.

just weighing out the options, i hear they have lo-jack for bikes now, but even with that they can take it to where its going and strip everythig adn dump it before the police could respond, it seems.

I would not risk it, move into first floor and park it inside
can you reach the ground if you sit on a bike? :D

Lowjack is going to be $700-800 plus some odd monthly charge. Even then you cant guarantee it will be safe. If you're going to be in an apartment....only bike I can think of that would be safe there would be an old Kawasaki 550LTD or some old ugly jap cruiser not worth $1000. unless you can get a garage for it, Id say scrap the bike idea.

No monthly charges with LoJack.

yeah but even by the time the cops respond, they could have it stripped and dropped before they got there.

If you live at an apartment, get a garage or storage or something, apartments are the buffet of motorcycle theft.

Leash a PitBull to it...
But for real, I use to cover mine and locked it to my car port with a steel cable lock, or I would put my bike parallel to the curb under my carport and pull my car into the parking space until my front bumper touched the side of my bike, and then covered it and locked my bike to the front of my car. Just don't forget to unlock your bike from your car when you move your car (no I didn't make that mistake). Anyways, it still wasn't safe, but I think it would have deterred someone from stealing it if they thought it was too hard to get too. :)

just FYI, the guy i bought my bike from had one stolen that was chained to his car port. He used a heavy, thick gauge chain and they still took that shit.
IMO, if you can't watch it or lock it up i wouldn't buy one. It sucks, but half the reason i was cool with getting mine is because it has a garage to sleep in.
Oh, and most apts wont let you pull your bike into the living area - it's against the fire code or something.

I went to home depot and bought a drop in anchor.. .I drilled a hole in the parking lot next to the curb and put the anchor in the ground.. it has a big I-bolt that screws into it. Then I got a cable lock at a bike shop
I put the bike along the curb.. run the cable through the sub frame, wheel and chain area. Then another cable through the main part of the frame and lock it all down the the mount that is in the concreet. Then I cover it with the bike cover and then pull my car right up against it.
IF someone wants to take it they will have to work for it and by doing all this it will take them a few minutes to get it loose.. hopefully by that time they will have a nice size hole in them from my 3rd floor balcony ;)

sounds quite far-fetched, but...
if you live in an apartment where you can park just outside your apartment, trail some fishing line from your balcony/front door/whatever is more convenient to your parking spot. every time you park and leave your bike unattended, tie the line somewhere on it (rim, chain, whatever), then tie the other end to something inside your apartment that will make a very loud noise if yanked (jar of pennies on a counter, vase on a shelf, your cock, etc.). most thieves are in and out as quickly as possible so they will not see nor think to look for fishing line tied to your bike. keep a gun locked and loaded and handy. if you are in your place and said noisemaker is yanked, grab the gun and head outside. problem solved and very cheaply...
note: in a 2nd story apartment this will only work in setups where your parking area is directly outside and below your apartment...
