You don't need full coverage on an older 600 worth $3k or so. You would pay close to that for one year of coverage. Even if you wreck it, parting it out would net you quite a bit of your initial investment anyway. Besides, getting full coverage on a sportbike and making a claim if anything ever happened, you'd never be able to afford another claim for a few more years and your rates would be astronomical!

Can i get liability and theft coverage? I'd hate to be out 3k, especially in the first year i own it before it wouldn't be worth it...

Should i get it on my auto policy with state farm, or would going to one of those rinky dink places be less expensive.

Yes, you can get liability and comprehensive only. I would go to a small place and get it. All cops want to see is a piece of paper when you get pulled over. All you want is your bike to be covered if it's stolen.

Call around and get several quotes before you choose one. I was amazed at the price differences between companies for the same coverage. I also got a better rate by calling the company direct versus using a local agent. I was paying 120 a year thru Progressive, then I called Geico and they quoted me 80 bucks for the exact same coverage. I switched to Geico.
I only have liability because my bike stays in a nice comfy garage when I'm not riding it.
