Posting for a friend.
86 Yamaha V Max Motor. Looks like a rod/bolt might have let loose. I gave him a borescope to check things out. But from the looks of his spark plug, its not good. Ground strap and center electrode are bent side ways. More than likely has a nice viewing hole in the middle of the piston.
I know nothing about motorcycles and have no clue what this stuff costs. But from talking to him about a quote he got from the local Yamaha shop, I would rebuild a badass car motor for what they want. TIA

Cheaper to ebay it and get a used motor than to rebuild the one you have. You'll probably be looking at atleast $1000 into the bike for a rebuild. I'm pretty sure you can get a motor like that on ebay for $300-$500

I hear ya. The yamaha shop wanted a 1000.00 labor to tear down and put pistons in. Not including pulling the motor and re stabbing it.

You probably picked the most expensive Jap bike to work on.Dont even bother having a shop rebuild it.They will more than likely fuck it up.
I would take others advice and find a low mileage engine out of a wrecked one.

We rebuild motorcycle engines all day long, usually for use in some form of small race car. And labor is the killer, we get 17 hours @ $55 per for a complete with the cases being split, no parts, no valve job. In most instances it isn't worth it for a regular street bike, unless you want to make some hp. As you stated if a rod cap fell off, more than likely it's because it spun a bearing and broke one rod bolt, then the other one will appear to have been left loose, we see it everytime we see a rod through the cases. At any rate, if you can look up inside the engine and the rod isn't dark blue or black, (BIG IF) then it's possible to save it. If it did turn a bearing, the crank will be junk.
