I'll take GWB and Cheney running my country any day... over that french loving worm John Kerry or perhaps that fat ankled bitch Hillary Clinton...

Fuel prices will stabilize and are controlled by supply and demand... quit buying so much... it'll go down. If we keep using it at the current pace, it will continue to climb.

Iraq is a temporary problem... the plan to get out is forth coming, but we still have a year or two before we're finished over there.

Keep the faith Americans....

or perhaps you'd rather live in France.

That's impossible. We are using gas like we've been using it for the last 80 years- excessively. Until we start buying hybrids/bicycles/public transportation, the gas will continue to climb until it stabilizes at the level which we use it at (probably somewhere around 4-5/gallon). Gas is three times as expensive in France, but their economy doesn't revolve around it- like ours does.

French cities were developed before the advent of automobiles - and they don't HAVE to drive to do things like we do here in America. Our transportation infrastructure is designed around the long range automobile trip.

Governments lie to their people to "protect them" while the media plays whatever stirs a fuss up in society. I lived in the U.S. during Bush's first term and had no problems with him or his policies.

First ABC/Gallop polls are done with a small % of the population. They don't hold much value but it does not suprise me that his approval is declining.

As far as Bush. Whats went on during his presidency? Lets see- 9/11 and now the total destruction on NO for two. Not to mention the Clinton reign pulled the country into a recession which Bush was left to dig us out of. Add the war in Iraq which people seem to have lost faith in. If anyone says Iraq was not a threat can move there. Their leader was a tyrant and supported terrorist activity. They breed terrorists that come to our country, hijack planes, and run them in to buildings killing 3000+ American people. But Anti-Bush people believe that our military forces, the ones who enlisted to protect or freedoms, should pack up and leave. However w/o our military the same tyrant forces will only grow stronger leaving us more prone to future terrorist activity and attacks.

It does not matter what he does. People are easily influenced and not loyal to anything anymore. They are so ignorant they think our president is out to hurt the citizens and our country. If he granted each person their biggest wish in life, there would still be bitching. For the people who want tlo criticize, get off you ass and do something; preferably move to Canada. Our country is stil the greatest there is and millions would love to take our spot. What happend to Nationalism?

its funny that you say our country is the best in the world, because when I saw the pictures from New Orleans it looked like a third world country and that was four days after the hurricane. If we are such a kick ass country, why cant we help these poor people. Is a hurricane classified as homeland security or is that just for terrorists. Thousands died for no reason. Hmmm...sounds a lot like 9/11. If you ask me, bush has lots of questions to answer.

Were shooting at relief workers and policemen, that REALLY slows up relief efforts.
The officials in Louisiana were incharge of the Louisiana national guard and didn't call them up before the storm hit. People are starving inside their flooded homes after 5 days with children and still won't leave when the boats ask them to. Some people may be too stupid to survive this by not leaving. About every home where people are being rescued has a sat dish and a flooded car in front of the house. they weren't too poor to leave, just too hard headed.
Maybe this is evolution at work.

that responsibility would fall on the athorities in New Orleans. Have a flood plan, use city and state resources LIKE city and school buses to evacuate, If the state knew about the problem, seems like they could have taxed the casinos and horse tracks enough in the last 10 years to handle it. In 2001 the levee board of New Orleans took in $28,000,000,
the bulk was spent on ADMINISTRATIVE pay, NOT levee repair. Graft, corruption and theft on La. levee boards was rampant. They bought casinos, airports, airplanes, funded wetlands, and did anything they wanted too all the while complaining that the FEDS. wouldn't rebuild the levees.

Yeah becuase homeland security is responsible for controlling the weather? Bush has many other respnsiblities to worry about, he can't predict how bad and when NO is going to be hit by a hurricane. This hurricane will be a very small event on Americas overall history. Thats why there are dozens of agencies in the govt. delegated with a certian task. Becuase every president is still just a man, yo can't expect them to be a God. And yes it would require for one person to be a God to handle every single issue this country has.

Being the smart man bush is, dont you think that he knew that NO was spending the money elsewhere or did he turn a blind eye? Was it to hard to pick up a phone to see if everybody was doing their job right. When he found out that there was a hurricane coming towards NO he should of made sure everything was in order to be taken care of. I know that if I was him sittin at my crawford ranch on that monday, I sure as hell would of been flying over in my personal jet a soon as everything let up. Bush Declares Emergency in Louisiana
CRAWFORD, Texas — President Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Saturday because of the approach of Hurricane Katrina and his spokesman urged residents along the coast to heed authorities' advice to evacuate.

Bush, vacationing at his ranch, was being regularly updated about the storm, which is expected to hit land early Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency continue to coordinate with state authorities in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, and have prepositioned supplies in areas expected to be affected, he said.

The president's emergency declaration authorizes the FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and to provide appropriate assistance in a number of Louisiana parishes, or counties.

Authorities told residents of low-lying coastal communities to head for higher ground. The storm was expected to strengthen as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico and could become a Category 4 hurricane with wind of at least 131 mph.

"We urge residents in the areas that could be impacted to follow the recommendations of local authorities," McClellan said.

Corps Officials Say New Orleans' Flood Walls Were in Good Condition 9/1/2005
By Tom Ichniowski

Leaders of the Army Corps of Engineers say the city's flood walls were in excellent shape before the storm but weren't designed to handle a hurricane of Katrina's magnitude.

In a phone briefing Sept. 1, the Army's Chief of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Carl A. Strock, addressed some of the issues that have surfaced about Corps-built structures around New Orleans. Strock said that the project that resulted in the levees along Lake Pontchartrain was designed to protect against a 200-to-300-year storm, which equates to about a Category 3 hurricane, but Katrina was more severe.

Al Naomi, senior project manager in the Corps' New Orleans District, says, "The [project's] design was not adequate for a storm of this nature." He adds that to cover a Category 5 storm, work on storm protection improvements would have had to start 20 or 25 years ago.

The levee breaches occurred in areas that were "in excellent condition" before the storm and were inspected, said Naomi. He said there was nothing the Corps could have done involving the completed floodwalls that could have prevented the breaches.

Another question concerned the allocation of national resources during a war. The war in Iraq has not had an impact on the Corps budget, said Strock. According to his analysis, Corps funding "has been fairly stable" since the early 1990s and the Corps has spent more than $300 million since 2002 on storm protection in the New Orleans area. "We were just caught by a storm of an intensity which exceeded the design of the [flood protection] project we have in place," he said.

Some Corps contracts in the area had been delayed, but Naomi says those contracts were not in the sections of the levees that failed.

Since the 1930s, Louisiana has lost more than 1.2 million acres of wetlands, which act as a natural buffer against storms. But Strock contends that wetlands losses "did not have a significant impact" in the case of Katrina. He says that most of the losses of wetlands and barrier islands were south and west of the city, and not in Katrina's path

So what did bush do after the hurricane and the flood? Because I am pretty sure everybody in NO knew that they needed to take shelter and get the fuck out. but that is hard to do when your broke and there is 10 hours of traffic ahead of you and gas costs 3 dollars a gallon. if you find some web pages on what bush did after the storm, that would be great.

Bush administration officials were blaming state and local authorities for the disaster response problems. The newspaper said the administration was rebuffed in an effort to take control of police and National Guard units reporting to Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco

its strange that condy was at a play on wednesday, whats up with that? The article still did not say what was being done after the stom hit. It seems the local government didnt care to much for the safetey of theses people nor did the federal government. Airlifting people out did not start until thursday and the storm was over by tuesday. how long does it take to survey the disaster area? hopefully in the future they can beat the two day record, but that shouldn't be to hard. i would love to stay and talk but i have work.

At the state level, the governors reserve the ability under the constitution to call up members of the Army National Guard in times of domestic emergency.

Louisiana Governor Blanco never mobilized all the State National Guard. guardsmen aren't waiting to move in normally, they have to be activated , then they report for duty, this typically takes a few days. Had she used her powers to activate all the guard on Wed or Thursday of the week before, it would have helped the situation, but then she would have to be able to see the future which neither President Bush OR the governor have.
