View Full Version : Why does my P4 (3.2ghz) run soo hot?

I have a P4 (3.2ghz) and it runs real hot. I have it on a MSI m/b. I am running a Asus Star Ice cooler (http://www.xpcgear.com/asusstarice.html) with an additional fan on the back of it. My box has 5 fans on it.

My computer runs at 70* C or 150* F. I even used some Artic Silver 5 between the cooler and the processor. What am I doing wrong here? Would a cheap ebay water cooler be the way to go? I really dont want to drop alot of coin on cooling and I do not want a loud fan.

Thanks,
James

cheap and watercooling don't mix!

Also, what is the ambient temperature of the room it is in? Nothing blocking the various vents? Are there enough vents?

Pics of the case might be in order. Also, you're sure the airflow is consistent? (i.e. front to back.)

what kind of p4? b,c,e, extreme edition? the prescotts are notorious for heat issues, as well as some of the newer ones. you might just have to deal. shoulda gone a64 ;) also how much as5 did you use? you should have a thin layer evenly spread out around the heat spreader, just enough so you cant see the heat spreader itself, more=bad

Prescott run super hot, if you have one.

what kind of case? also you either used too much or too little thermal paste.

I really dont think I used too much. I put an eraser sized dot on the center of the processor. It is a prescott, and I know that they run hot, but this is real hot. The box was bought at Fry's. It has two fans sucking air into the box from the front, 2 on the back of the box blowing air out, one on the side blowing air in. 1 fan blowing air into the Star Ice cooler and one fan blowing out of the Star Ice cooler. What is the best cooler that is under 100?

Thanks,
James

the most expensive thermalright you can find for your chip with the biggest fan it will hold. and yea your screwed, there are several reports of prescots running in those ranges

if you are just looking at your motherboard temps don't bother...I've seen boards post temps +/- 20*c before...I have a pressy 3.0 over clocked to 3.3 using the exact same cooler and under full load with the cooler fan turned up it only gets to around 55*c, idle its at about 45*c... its probally running around 50 unless there is something seriously wrong with the install. I'm using the abit IC7 max3 with mine and before i flashed the bios it would read about 15* hotter than actual, but what i'm getting at is that mobo temp readings are basically garbage.

Heh, I just 'tried' to read this drunk. It didn't fare so well.

I have a 2.8 p4 prescott, used to run at around 65 c under load, went and bought a new fan/heatsink and o now it run about 47c under load, and anywhere from 37 to 40 normal, so apparently a new fan/heatsink helps out a bit.

Cooler Master Hyper 48, works great.

Wow.. my AMD64 3000+ idles at 38c on air with a stock heatsink.

I couldn't imagine running that hot.

From your account, I think you may have used too much artic silver. Instructions imply you should use what would amount to 1/2 a grain of uncooked rice. An eraser sized dose sounds like a bit much.

Not sure if that's your culprit, and have you tried a different temp monitoring program to see if there is a difference?

What other program should I use. I am using MSI CoreCenter.

Thanks,

Dam that's hot!

I have a P4 3.2 mhz also and it never goes above 32 C or 91 F. I am not sure what type of P4 it is the case is pretty nice with lots of ventilation.

I'm running an Intel Celeron 2.6GHz, overclocked to 3.0GHz, and it only runs 29C at idle.
