View Full Version : Hooking a computer directly to a computer?

I've got an old computer in our office that we use for doing our documentation. It runs Windows ME as a platform. I'm needing to pull off virtually all of our files and move them to another computer. I've tried to add it to our network (all other comps are running XP) and it was a no go.

In doing this, do I have to set IP addresses for each machine or can I run a USB cord and call it a day, pull everything off and be done with it? Or is it more in depth?

Not sure why it wouldn't hook up to the network, but as an alternate, you could get a crossover cable, hook it up to one of the computers that does get on the network, set the ip addresses, pull the files over, and then rehook up to the network, and you should be set.

It's been 'buggy' for awhile. Initially it was on the network, all seemed fine. It got to the point that I could see it on the network, but it couldn't see the network - other than the printers.

Can you pull the hard drive out and install it in another machine thats already running XP?

M$ ME is buggy, at best.

Like BP said, maybe try to add it to another computer to extract the info you need.

Get a 1GB USB jumpdrive and transfer everything that way...or an alternate is to install a CD or DVD burner on it, install a burning app. like Nero or CD/DVD creator..and burn everything you need to a DVD or CD. ME sucks balls..and I've NEVER been able to make it work very well on a network...especially if your trying to make it work with networked machines running XP.

pull the hard drive and copy everything you want over, fastest way and completely free...

OK...not everyone knows how to set the IDE jumpers on a hard drive to work as slave/master etc. That is a good way to do it but you have to take the computer partially apart if you are allowed.
