View Full Version : Bush administration opposed to .xxx domain.

The Bush administration is objecting to the creation of a .xxx domain, saying it has concerns about a virtual red-light district reserved exclusively for Internet pornography.
Michael Gallagher, assistant secretary at the Commerce Department, has asked for a hold to be placed on the contract to run the new top-level domain until the .xxx suffix can receive further scrutiny. The domain was scheduled to receive final approval Tuesday.
"The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children," Gallagher said in a letter that was made public on Monday.

This is really stupid IMO.
If we create a .xxx domain and tell porn dealers that they HAVE to use it, then we can easily start blocking it at homes and business. Even porn sites that currrently use .com would only need to buy a new web address and redirect to there. The content would be on the .xxx site and could be blocked. I cannot see how the administration would be against them. I guess they don't want to keep the little kids from seeing porn on the web....

While it sounds like a good idea, we could only enforce it in the states and it'd probably never work anyway. :(

I dont see it being regulated. Not all of them are going to use that domain.

Yep, how do we enforce the law in Mexico?

They might be in Mexico, but they still have to process those credit cards in the US. Also, alot of other countries are on board with this, including EU countries, Russia (where a lot of porn exists) and others. International enforcement might not be difficult.
Anyways, the feds could regulate whether or not credit card companies allow transactions to certain websites.
Now, I'm not saying this is a perfect solution. The flaws you have pointed out ARE legit. However, this is a common sence, good first step that could solve quite a few issues.

Bush is just afraid it'll be blocked in the white house and he won't have any more use for the Internet.

That sounds tipical of the Bush administration, they are wasting time on porn when the average American is taking a beating at the gas pump! $2.65 for a gallon of gas? They won't be happy until we are all unemployed & on welfare. I guess as long as the oil companies control Washington we are all screwed.

The Bush administration was not origionally against this. In fact, like many of us they believed it to be a good idea. Since web filtering tools could easily keep this out of the way of kids....
The problem is, there is no way to prevent them from using the .com and other domains. We could try to restrict them, realistically there is no way to enforce it.
So, why oppose it? Well, there is no good reason to have it. This is why they stated it would create a red light district.... It also rewards the pornographers and gives them virtually twices the space they currently occupy.
If you think about it, if you were a porn site operator and you knew that filtering tools were keeping your site from being visited, you would simply move to the .com domains as well.
Until we could enforce it, it is a useless option.

Okay, not sure what you are saying.. You have never tried to buy a domain name? There are what we call squatters who buy up domain names that are used by real products. The purpose is similar to scalp the domain name. The internet is not infinite, that is why they want to open up more domains such as .edu .bus .... There are an infinite number of domains.
Never mind you probably don't understand anyway. I should not have to educate you on this stuff... do your own research.
