View Full Version : WTF is wrong with my laptop?

It will just shut off for no reason. I've checked all the setting and changed everything to NEVER turn off, but I'll be downloading something, come back and it will be off. Only once have I seen it say something about the driver being messed up, but of course I can't get it to say it again and I have no clue what it means.

BTW - this is a 1 yr old Toshiba Satellite laptop.

Have you run a virus scan or adware scan on it recently? I had a server that was doing that exact same thing and it ended up being a virus :(

check for any recalls on the battery. I know Dell had to recall a crap load of them for the C610's. Try leaving the a/c power connected to it and see if it still shuts down. You can also check event viewer on it for any warnings or entries before it goes down.

Need to know the model number. I know a couple of the Toshiba models have a design flaw with the video card. Especially with the 6100's.

My company uses 6100's and thats where I first learned of the problem. Basically the Video card come loose from it's socket.

here is a thread that you can check out.

As an aside, there is another series design flaw that is easily fixable. My laptop had the fix (I got lucky), so I never experienced the problem. But TDF #4 is also very common: no video due to the card becoming unseated. Back when I was discussing the PCB being a daughtercard, the video card is also separate from the motherboard. It’s centrally located and can pop out of its seat causing the loss of video. Some people pressed very hard on the space bar to return the video, but the problem kept coming back. Blame our old friend case flex. Now Toshiba did acknowledge this flaw and issued a free fix – a metal clip that holds the card down. Install is a breeze and given that my laptop came with this and I’ve never had a complete loss of video, the fix seems to work.

Yes, I have ran a virus scan and spyware scan. It's not that.

Hollywood - I'll have to look at the model tonight.

Are you running it on battery or with the power cord? Ever notice if it happens after a certain amount of time?

Ok, here's what happens: I get an error message that says "The ati2dvg drive has stopped working" and then it goes into safe mode. What the hell is that?

As for the model, on the back it says Toshiba Satellite A65 - S126 System Unit.
Model: PSA60U-02K015

Thanks, but if I had the time to sit around and read 206 websites I wouldn't have asked here. I figured someone might have seen the error before and could save me some time/money and help me out.

ati2davg maybe? Sounds like a video card driver to me.

You can d/l the ati2davg.dll for free online.
