No point in cleaning it up if you're not going to prevent re-infection. If you plan to protect it, you should probably buy a CD anyway (Trend, Norton, McAfee, etc..). You can run a program from CD right?

Of course it might be better just to re-install the OS but it depends on working around programs and data you want to keep.

Are you saying "I won't download" or "IT won't download"
Go to Microsoft.com and download there spyware remover.. works great and will block unwanted things from pushing themselves to your computer. By the way.. Adware and Viruses are two seperate things though both equally annoying!

Well, I wouldn't go spend any money on software if you're not sure it will even run program files. If you can offload the music/videos or don't care about losing them, I'd say rebuild the PC. Did your brother leave you the software (OS) or can he rebuild it? Optionally, depending on the OS, build and svc pack, you could just re-run the install or latest service pack (as a repair) but I tend to favor clean builds in cases like this.

If its that hosed up after a month I'd also suggest the format and reinstall idea. Get a firewall in front of it first then patch it first thing then load your AV and spyware stuff.

Paul,

Stop downloading pRon! :p

I tend to agree with the others in just saving stuff your files, etc. to a CD or zip drive, and then wiping it clean and reinstalling the OS (though I know you dont have the OS software with you :o ). And then be sure to get Norton or some sort of anti-virus.

No. The only way to do that is for me to educate you on how to use a computer, $50 doesnt cover that.

I had pretty much the same problem, I ended up doing a quick fix so that my computer could download some of these programs to keep your computer safe. First off, go to Merijn.org and download HijackThis. Download it to its own folder. There is a direct download address in about the 4th window down the middle of the page (only took my comp 2 secs to download). This page (http://www.merijn.org/htlogtutorial.html) is a really good breakdown of what everything is in "english." Don't fix any of the stuff that comes up, as not everything will be Spyware, Adware, Viruses, etc. When you run the program and save the log, post the log up and I can help you to remove stuff that we know doesn't belong there. If I can do this on my own, I'm sure that any of the guys here who REALLY know computers can help you once you have the log also. Just use the tutorial page and don't delete anything that you're not sure about. Hopefully this should free your comp up enough to fix it properly and not have to wipe it clean.

P.S. The problem with my browser being re-directed was caused by four 017's that wouldn't go away. The desktop can probably be taken back by deleting the image that is covering it. In my instance, the desktop was just being covered up by a full screen pic. The pic was a blue screen with the error message on it. Manually go to Windows/ system32 / and then you have to browse for the pic. Just delete it to get your desktop back.
