'90 LX Hatchback with Vortech A-trim
T5 with 3.55 gears
354 rwhp/387 rwtq
Full stock weight with 17" wheels, 255/40 street tires out back
Just bench racing. How much more power would I need to run 11.99 on 275/40/17 Drag radials?

Ken Bjonnes is running 10.80's with an NA mod motor with about 380 rwhp......granted, you are using a fat full interior car on DR's so I think 410rwhp. Bill is running 11.7's with 315rwhp but using slicks.....
Let's just say more power than you currently have! ;)

I know 11's can be had with much less horsepower than i'm making, but my car doesn't weigh 2900 lbs, have a full drag suspension, or have 4.30 gears with big slicks. I'm trying to figure out how much power is needed with the setup mentioned above. I'm guessing i'll probably need about 400 rwhp but wanted to see what others thought. ;)
just for curiousity sake, greg and roscoe could you post your weight, gearing, and tires? I know josh is running 11.90's with the following setup:
'92 LX Hatchback N/A 302
Tremec 3550, 4.10 gears
320 rwhp/350 rwtq
3240 lbs, 28x9 slicks, drag suspension

Is this with a standard or auto --- cause I make 343 rwhp and 351 rwtq --- and I run 7.40s on motor @ 3590 lbs and a 3.23 gear ---- 26" slicks
I know that does'nt sound right but ask Carless Chris he was there...

Only passes I made were when I first got the car. It had 2.73 gears and was making 307 rwhp/343 rwtq. It went 8.9 at 81 with a 2.3 sixty foot in the 1/8.
What kind of car do you have?

i think if you drive it like you hate it, with the drag radials, and some skinny tires up front. i think it might get close now. but im gonna say you will need a little more. more like 380hp or so. hell take some weight out of it,seats, spare any extra weight. im just assuming you havent run it yet?

my car ran a 10.87 with 400hp n/a. with a 5 speed. 4.56s and the car weighs 3000. and it is not a stripped out car either, only thing it has is just racing buckets. still has power windows locks and all ac stuff under dash.

I don't mind shifting it hard but I don't want to strip it at all. Part of my goal is running 11's the way it sits, in full street form. No weight reduction, 17" wheels all around, drag radials and 3.55 gears.
Car still has stock shortblock, stock heads with 1.7 rockers, stock cam, ported stock intake, stock TB, stock headers, stock hpipe with Flowmaster catback, 10-11 psi from vortech A-trim.
I think longtubes, catted xpipe, and 70 mm TB will probably get me to the 380 rwhp mark so maybe that will be enough power. I'm sure it really depends on what kind of sixty foot I can cut at full weight with 3.55's and 17" drag radials. Any guesses what a Full weight '90 LX Hathback weighs with 17" wheels and a vortech on it?

I ran a 11.8 @ 416 RW at 3400+ lbs on 17s Marcus... That was with my sweet ass tranny and lagging shifts, so I would think with 400ish on DRs you should be able to coax it into the 11s...

1.70 and 117. The tires unloaded on launch, I have my rear Konis too stiff, so it tried to squat and just bounced up. It hooked and then unloaded the tires when the shocks rebounded.. lol. :o
I ran a 1.63 and 1.65 my two runs prior, but I missed second completely, and not just a slow shift, and only ran a 12.0, and 12.1 @ 115-116. :(
Only passes it made on motor in the 1/4, hope its a good enough guesstimate for ya.

Like most have said already, around 300hp depending on weight.I have seen a few 5.0 cars run in the 11s with 280 or so at the tires. Being able to 60' the car helps alot too.

Those are some good sixty foots for 17" drag radials. I'd love to get some sub 1.8 sixtys on 275/40/17 drag radials. I'll probably need atleast another 30-40 rwhp to hit my goal though. Longtubes, catted xpipe, 70 mm TB, and more fine tuning of the A/F should pick up a good amount. we'll see.
Thanks for the info guys.

ohhh, I said 17"s nothing about DRs... ;)

No wonder. So with 1.9 sixty foots you still think 400 rwhp for 11's?

Id say at full weight about 400 rwhp maybe less if u can launch it and shift the hell out of it. My car has gone 11.95 at full weight around 3550# it has around 410 to the wheels

I ran my friend's 04 Cobra, it weighed 3920 with me in it... on stock tires I cut a 2.01 60, and just grannyed it down the track to a 12.02 @ 119. This was with about 455 RW and similar torque.
I think taking off 50 hp, and 500 pounds would equate to about the same. So with a 1.9 60 foot the same scenario would have gone 11s for sure. I think it would have gone 11s with another run, but I didn't want to be responsible for any broken half shafts. :D
edit: here is the dyno of said Cobra... not 455, but it was a close guess:

Robs old LX hatch weighed 3450 with him and no Vortech, stock hood, stock heads, stock suspension, with 17" 97 Cobra wheels. You'll be in the 34-3500 range. ;)

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like my goal of 11's with full weight and 17" drag radials shouldn't require a whole lot more power. Probably just a couple minor mods, good weather and a sub 2.0 sixty foot.

If you get some practice with the DR's you should be fine for 11's. I don't have a mustang, but I do have a supra with about 300rwhp, and 275/40/17 nitto dr's and can cut 1.89's all day. I launch high, do a big burnout, with about 18 psi in the tires. With 360rwhp and only weighing 3250 and some dr's you should hit high 11's. Do you have the DR's yet??? Try and run it on your current set up and see how you do.

Last time I went to the track with my car I had 324 rwhp and 3440 lbs. and I cut a 1.80 sixty and a 1.82 sixty on 275/40/17 nitto drag radials and ran a 7.98 at 86mph I would think if you practiced you could get close with the power you have if you do weigh about 3550 or so I would 10-20 more hp and you should be there.
Just my opinion.
