what is the scariest movie you have ever seen??

I'd say War of the Worlds, though I doubt many people will agree with me. Most "Horror" movies to me aren't exactly scary. If I do jump, it's because they've suprised me, not because I'm scared of anything. A real scary movie is within the realms of reality and makes you think about what you would do if it actually happened. War of the Worlds did that for me. Another good example is Jaws, which I'm about to watch right now in fact.

definetely nothing recent thats for sure. im goin with the classics: damien omen, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm st.,
i watched the amityville horror pt2 the other day. its nothing like the orig(or remake) and is full of gore and murders and satanic special effects. ive always like horror flicks and i jumped a few times in this one.

The scene where the creature was half-morphed into a dog was all kinds of fucked up.

i watched the exorcist for the first time when it was re-released, and the only scary part was the walking upside down the stairs scene...the rest had been made fun of so many times in other things, it was like i'd already seen the whole movie...

Another vote for the Exorcist!
I think people are confusing "suspense" with "horror"... Stuff like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Jaws just make you jump out of your seat at the moment. To me scary is shit that fucks with your head, like supernatural or psychological.
Good examples are:
- Mothman Prophecies
- Original Asian Horror films (The Eye, The Ring, Ju-On)

Exorcist: Directors cut, Turistas, Black Water, Alien, Aliens, Friday the 13th Uncut 1980 (Not scary by today's standards, but launched the 80s exploitation film era), Psycho 1960, Halloween, Cabin Fever, Session 9, Last house on the left 1972, Spiral (not scary, but very disturbing), Helter Skelter, etc..
Scream was good watching it for the very first time. It was unique in some ways, but ultimately a clever spoof. Not really a scary or disturbing film IMO.
Try watching David Cronenberg's "The Brood" 1979. Watching that movie as a little kid caused me a couple of sleepless nights. Cronenberg doesn't mess around and puts the D in disturbing.
My wife feels the scariest film is "The Entity". The movie is based on documented events and the opening sequence is a rape scene. Most women rank this movie at the top of their list on polls about horror films.

The reason people make such a big deal over this movie is the shocking ending. The movie itself is actually very slow as they spend an hour developing the characters and storyline. The final act of the movie is twisted and quite disturbing. Ask yourself if someone being fed vomit would bother you? If not, then you're good to go.
Unless you are a horror buff, the average person probably won't like this movie. According to the way the MPAA rating formula works this movie would get an NC-17 rating. And that would be too mild of a rating for this movie, if it was rated.

Many good ones are listed, and I agree on them! One of my favorites was "The Sentinel", from about 1977. An apartment turns out to be a gate to Hell, and it's eerie and scary. Great rental, with many young (and old) actors you will know, that later became stars. It really gave me the chills.

I've seen just about every scary movie so I'm pretty much immune to being "scared" by movies any more.
Some others: Jacob's Ladder, Children of the Corn, Halloween, The Shining, Omen.
The rest just sort of fit all together.
Halloween was special because I saw it when the original came out in the movies with a chick who threw her popcorn in the air and ran out of the theater screaming, "Hell no. I'm out of here."

i think the movie is called The Unnameable...pretty freaky but it doesn't get near Exorcist though on "scare the shit out of me" factor
I heard you only watch porn with shaved men!!

Forgot to mention Soylent Green with Charlton Heston.
It's good as long as you watch the movie not knowing anything about the ending before hand.

POLTERGEIST
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084516/plotsummary
I saw this when I was 6 years old and spent the next 4 years looking under my bed for that clown and was afraid to have me feet hang off the bed thinking it was gonna pull me out of the bed.
Children of the corn
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084516/plotsummary
I saw this when I was around 8 and my great grandfather used to have a 100 acre corn farm that we would play in. I still get goosebumps to this day when I go in a cornfield.

Stupid thing is that I've watched Aliens, Alien3 (most of Resurrection) and all of AVP1
I refuse to EVER watch Alien again and I don't wanna see AVP2 (it's due to come on cable any day now.) dangit............I HATE THE GUY WHO THOUGHT THAT THING UP. What's his name, Gieger or something? HATE HIM.

28 days later for me ... Zombies on speed scare the shit out of me.
"28 Days Later" isn't a "Zombie" movie it's a rage virus movie. The people don't die they just change into mindless killing machines
I do think that stuff is creepy with the way science is now. It could become a reality in the future by accident, but my vote goes to Event Horizon
Movies dont really scare me but if you want to scare your children you cant go wrong with "The Crate" that short movie in Creepshow. Just tell them that little ape monster is under their bed. :D

LOL!! I had a Gizmo doll as a kid and loved that damn thing.
The Exorcist scared the shit out of me as a kid. I slept with the the lights on for at least a month. When they released the special director's cut (2001 I think) my wife rented it and I refused to watch it. She kind of forced me into it (called me a wuss) and I had trouble sleeping for a week.
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was pretty damn scary.

on the lighter side Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
lmao......I wouldn't go to McDonald's for years because if that movie. My g-ma fucked up and hired a clown that makes balloon animals for my 8th b-day and I ran straight into the corner of a wall to get away from his ass. I had to get stitches needless to say.

THE SHINING
I saw it when i was 10 and it was by far the scariest movie ever. It is my all time favorite horror movie and still creeps me out watching it.
Ju-On was scary as well.
Not my all time favorite but you are right about the scary part. Say "scary movie" and Shining is what comes to mind, every time.

Salem's Lot. The scene with the friend floating and scratching on the window saying, "Leeettttt meeee innnnn.......".
yup, that one did me in. I had lost my glasses while swimming and had to sit close to the TV. I was so scared and couldn't take my eyes off the TV.
That one that is coming out right now....Quarantine gets me with the trailers. I can only imagine what the movie will be like. But then again, the last weird flick I watched was the Blair Witch Project and all it did was make me sick from the camera movement.

when i was little it was Gremlins 1, Alien, Aliens, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Poltergeist, and Child's Play 1.
In highschool it was The Blair Witch Project. When shes in the tent and all of a sudden hands are pushing down on it. You hear the voices. That shit had my hear beating. All the way through her running into the woods. The ending when she got killed and the camera fell. I jumped up on my seat and didnt even watch. I put my head down right before she came up on the her friend. the childrens hands all over the walls just did it for me. thats where i would keep looking up everynow and then until the end. i came home and had to turn on all the lights as i went from room to room. after the movie finished my buddy wanted to go offroading off of 360. we got deep inside;this was about 11pm at night; and i told him to turn the fuck around immediately.
recently: the decent had its moments, quarantine, the ring, and dude wheres my car.
oh and the grudge. i only made it as far as the hospital camera scene with the girl phasing in and out towards the camera. i shut that bitch off quickly.
