I've been told by a regular that taking the whole track in 3rd is cool and can be done. It will actually make me smoother.

There are two 1st gear corners out there. But, your probably much faster than me, so 3rd gear would probably be ok for you ;)

You can rent full leathers for 20 bucks. By the way, your pants and jacket must have a 360-degree zipper, I believe.

Monsoon X
06-09-2005, 10:15 AM
Hey JC, do you know which direction your going on the track? Clockwise or counter clockwise?

No. I do not know yet. I just want to have fun and learn something Nick. If I have to only use 3rd, then I will. There's no need for me to go out there and start trying to take corners at 10,000 rpm in 1st gear. I'm liable to spin up the wheel, get scared, chop the throttle and highside. hahahahaha 3rd is just fine for me.

Nick Chapman
06-09-2005, 10:21 AM
No. I do not know yet. I just want to have fun and learn something Nick. If I have to only use 1st and 3rd, then I will. Oh well. We'll see how it goes.

You can get away with it. I was only being a smart ass
There are a couple of turns that should be taken in 1st or 2nd gear, and they are together with each other. But you should be alright from 1st to 3rd. If your going clockwise, you can carry a little more speed thru those turns. If your going counter clockwise, then you have to slow it down a little more.

Monsoon X
06-09-2005, 10:25 AM
My second isn't totally unusable. It just can only hold a certain amount of throttle input before it slips and grabs. If I have enough momentum I can take a 2nd gear turn but, I can't give it alot of gas or it will slip.

I'll find out what I can and can't do when I get out there and do some laps to get familiar with the course.

Nick Chapman
06-09-2005, 10:40 AM
Wish I could tag along out there with you guys.
Listen to the instructor. Ty is VERY GOOD! And he knows his way around that track VERY well. He has the track record there, and he set it on a 600. Just don't try to keep up with him ;)

Your reply inherently justifies a v-twin's advantage.

Anyways, Monsoon X rides an R1---While your bike makes ~45-47ft-lbs of peak torque at 10,000RPM, his makes 60-65ft-lbs of torque at 3500-4000RPM. Additionally, his bike has taller gearing in first and second than 600cc bikes. Do you care to retract your statement?

Whatever you say man. The taller gearing will make it lug even more than it already will. If we both went to the track and he left his in 3rd the whole time and i was in second I got money mine would come off the corner harder. No I do not wish to retract my statement. I don't have to have the massive V-twin torque im a little guy on a little bike. When I would come off the corners it wanted to pull so hard I had to keep myself in check cause a few times I would run up on some of those v-twins with the massive torque. The extra revs of the inline would play in your favor sometimes for less shifts. I say my power band is from 8k to 16k to the revlimiter. Thats an 8k rpm range. That seems like a pretty wide range.

kpc01
06-10-2005, 02:27 AM
well, my full leathers wont be here til monday or tuesday, and also the ridesmart website says 100 bucks then 80 for the leathers, I am going to hold out and try and make it in August. This will give me more time to get used to my bike too, so it might be good. If it is free to watch, I wouldn't mind coming out there at noon or so and watching people ride....but for sure count me in when August comes around :D

I doubt it. ;) I can get into the gas much earlier in the corner if I use 3rd gear w/o fear of spinning up the rear tire. I come out of corners pretty hard. Harder than your wittle Kawi. ;)

Oh really? I don't think you have any idea how much torque an inline 1000cc bike has. My bike makes more torque at 3500 RPM than your bike does through its entire RPM range. Assuming we both have the same speed and hit the throttle at the same time, do you still think you will have more drive coming out of a corner? My 3rd gear pulls harder than a GSX-R750's 2nd gear. Your bike would only come off the corner harder if the 1000cc couldn't keep traction. Dude, you really need to stop jerking to your 636.
