Well i had a class in linux a couple semesters ago, and i really enjoyed it. We were using Redhat 9 I believe. Anyways, can you linux guru's suggest a distro for me?
Preferably one that is 64bit.

get gentoo, its great for noobies ;) nah get fedora like he suggested. mandrake is a good distro for noobs as it has some of the "here let me do it for you" like redhat, but some of the "fuck you do it yourself" that slackware has, but it was kinda buggy last time i used it.

Good luck with it. I'm running core 3 right now as my main desktop. Older pc I'm in the process of building a new box. I still have a dual p2 400 win2k3 server and my work laptop with xp.

So far I really like it alot and I'm just running on a p3 933 512mb ram, sblive value, and a 128mb ati 9200se

I wanna play with Gentoo again soon. I thought about setting my laptop up with it, but for now I don't really wanna mess with it. And the desktop needs to be able to record Alias, and play console games though the AIW, which isn't fully functioning in linux yet :(

So looks like I'll just have to build me another box in the near future.

Fuck gentoo. I swear, its linux distros like gentoo that are 10 steps back in the world of linux. I'm all for complete source compiled install, but for fucksake, make a god damn gui installation. I dont care about old school hardcore Unix users anymore, gui is clearly the fucking way of the future, try coming into the same fucking century with everyone else. I swear the downfall of linux continues to be the 'elite' squads clinging to the past glory days of Unix. Lets make shit harder! That will get us more users!

I've never actually taken the time to get a working install of gentoo.. ive tried a few times.. but with a print out of 120 pages for the install document.. it gets quite annoying.

I read not too long ago slashfags that gentoo is working on a gui installer. Of course all the slashfags were totally against it, go figure.

Although.. I thought you liked gentoo??

I like the concept of a complete source installation, I hate how they go about it.

Yeah, the install was a whore... took me 9 fucking hours the first time. But, as I fucked something up, and had to reinstall a 2nd time, the 2nd took about 4 hours. But then networking refused to work, tried every "fix" I could find... nothing, but worked fine during install so I knew it was something in the config. Said fuck it, and reinstalled a 3rd time, figured out where I fucked up the networking during install, and the 3rd install took about 2 hours.

Of course, I didn't do the source install. Just letting OpenOffice compile for 6 hours was enough to tell me installing everything from source was not my idea of fun.

A gui install would rock, for sure. There's a somewhat commercial distro, VidaLinux, that's all Gentoo, but using the Red Hat gui installer. I think it's kind of retarded they make you pay for it to get ... essentially Gentoo, which is totally free. Their free downloadable version has so many features disabled, you might as well just install Gentoo and be done with it :-/
