Ok guys, i'm new to motorcycle riding, and buying for that matter. If I want to buy a bike from someone of an auction or website or something....what's the quickest way to find out if the transaction is legal? VIN number? Where can I go, etc...
Thanks for the help in advance.

You dont read much do you....
Answering the question asked...
Run the VIN, but look for obvious things, cut ignition wires, etc....
Just always be cautious, if it seems to good to be true, might be;)
You could always buy another frame, but id never want to get into all that mess and caught with the stolen bike, wether you knew it was stolen or not...

yeah, like a guy I just dealt with!
Brief story: Cycle trader ad: 2001 Suzuki GXS-R750 Great condition, Like New. with 3650 miles for $3500.
Man lived in lewisville and just moved to the UK.
1:He says he will ship the bike, and give me the tracking number to see that its been shipped.
2:Then I have 24 hours to pay after he gives me the #.
3: I have to western union him the $3500. Western union is the only thing he would except.
4: Ran the VIN and it came bike as a suzuki but not registered to anyone.
5:HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM..........Something fishy

Have your insurance company run his VIN number---or---I believe there is a website you can check it yourself. Do a search.

Shit man, that dudes been all over ebay....
I had asked him a simple question about one of the bikes he had on ebay, gave me the exact same line he gave you....
Too bad there are so many shady fucks out there to watch out for, sometimes you really do miss out on the good deals because of all the other smucks....

Heres how you tell if the bike has been stolen.
First. Meet the person selling it and punch them in the face and start yelling "You stole my bike"!
If they run away it was stolen. If not then its not stolen.
Good Luck

If you need a vin number ran then let me know. I can run it and tell you if its clean or not.

i would be surprised if he actually has the bike at all, stolen or not. i have a similar ebay story:
when i was looking into bikes at first, i found one on ebay that was said to be in onalaska, tx (which is on a peninsula in lake livingston). i contacted the guy, and he said he lives in the UK but the bike is at his grandma's in onalaska. something did not sound right. he wanted me to pay for the bike, then he would fly back to the states and we would arrange a pickup. by then i smelled bullshit. i started asking questions about the town of onalaska. he didn't even know it was on lake livingston ! i told him if he plans on fucking people over he at least needs to school himself on his own scam...
my advice to you, just forget about this one...

thats the biggest scam, they never have a good phone number, even when you send an email from auto or cycletrader.com a warning comes up, i guess people were trying to hold the responsible for there dumb actions

well my biggest concern was actually meeting up with someone who is selling a bike, liking it, and buying it, and then three months from now have a cop...or the dude's bike who's it is pull me over and be like...."hey man, wtf"
I don't give two shits about the scammers, I know exactly who they are when they reply, it's the "legit" thieves that I'm worried about buying from

Check the VIN number on the bike (at the neck of the frame) and see if it matches the title. Then, read the number off to your insurance company.
