View Full Version : Working Out While Sick
Do you guys work out when you get sick?
I've had a bad sinus infection (now upper respiratory infection) for 3 months. I keep working out but not really hard. I finally took a day off yesterday to see the doc and got an antibiotic. Should I keep my light workouts or stop for a few days to let my body heal. (Please kee in mind that my kindergarteners are always getting me sick.)

It depends on how I feel. I hate taking time off from the gym, but sometimes I feel like taking the time off will help me get better quicker.
When I'm sick with a cold I like to hit the steam room.

I usually take off when I'm sick...but that also usually results in me not getting back into the gym for 4+ months. Once I'm out of my workout routine, it's too hard to get back into it. I'd say you should at least go and do a very light workout. This way, you never break the routine of showing up. That's what I'm going to try next time I get sick.

never work out sick. it puts ALOT of unneeded stress on your heart. BAD stress.
Thanks guys...as for "going" to work out. I have the gym set up in my bedroom...Lots of testosterone in there. Treadmill, weights, Weider C650, etc. My bed is just a tiny corner of my room, so I won't have an excuse not to get back into things. I do think I'll take time off. I went to school this morning and had gotten the other teachers sick. First thing I heard this morning was a very scratchy, stuffy-nosed voice telling me, "Patty, I'm gonna kill you! I don't get sick. You must be really bad for me to get it."
So, since it's hard to breathe and your advise is what I had thought, I'll take off a few days and hit the weights and running on Monday.
Again, thanks!

I kinda figured it wasn't good...but neither is getting out of routine for a few months. Maybe I'll just go and sit in the locker room for an hour, then leave... :p j/k

I've always been told it depends on how sick you are. For instance, if you're running a fever don't go, if you have the flu, don't go. But if you just have a sinus issue that dosen't affect you too much, then go ahead and go. Last time I had a sinus infection, I went to the gym and I could breathe afterwards.
I've been sick since Late January/Early February. I can't take off work to go see a doc without getting a lecture on how I should just rough it out from my boss. I'm going to rest a few days...but that's just my situation.
btw - the medicine the doctor gave me (Biaxin) makes me taste metal in my mouth, I itch all over, my tummy hurts and I'm still coughing, wheezing, and stuffy headed. I hope it kicks in soon. But the good news is.....I'm dizzy too! I get to just lay down and rest tonight. :)

It's not the flu. It's just some sort of upper respiratory infection. I ran a very low grade fever the entire time. When you get the flu, basically your skin hurts too...at least that's how it usually is for me (plus I had a flu shot). I've spread this through out the classroom. Lots of my kids are sick and the other 2 teachers in the room are sick too. I'm encouraging parents to go see the doctor now instead of waiting....the teachers in the room with me can't get off to go see one either but I'm going to talk to the office about this. That's just stupid to be given such a hard time about going when you're sick.
Been there 3.5 years and taken 4 days off due to illness.
