What should the idle be on my 2003 R6? And how can I adjust it?

I've had this problem a few times after riding for over an hour and it's warm (I'd say over 80°). I'll pull up to a red light or stop sign and the idle will be real low (below 1000 RPM) and idle real rough or die when I clutch in. It will restart but I'll have problems keeping it running and have to give it some gas to do so.

My bike typically idles around 1000 RPM and is real lopey. My friends CBR is like 1500 RPM. Should I raise mine up or does it sound like I have a problem?

I had a similiar problem on my gixxer but it was cuz my clutch wasnt adjusted right. played with the adjustment on the clip on and dont have a problem with it now. I idle around 1500rpm, I know some R6 guys that idle about that but 1000 rpm is alot quieter and u shouldnt have a problem stalling out there.

Now if it was the clutch wouldn't it be happening more frequently?

mine would only act up when my temp gauges started getting warm. I dunno, dont understand the workings of it, but when my water temp started showing 205+ I realized I had to let the bike roll and hit the starter to start it. (stop and go traffic sucks)

On my bike there is a black knob you can turn to adjust the idle. I let mine idle at around 1200 and it is smooth as glass. When it's warm there is no lope. It just purrs.

stock rpms is bettwen 1500 and 1250 ...look on the right side of the bike..right below the seat and above the clutch you will see a golden large screw that is your idle screw...adjust it there

No idea on the coil packs. Found the manual at home last night (PDF) and found how to adjust the idle. Also found a thread on the R6 Message Board about how to check for engine codes and how to clear them. Might possible be a bad TPS from what I'm reading but I'll need to look up any codes.

sorry,
Jose does it act like it's running on 3 cylinders? it did that to me one time a while back and I did take it back for the warranty work to have th coil packs switched out. Maybe a recurring problem ?? im not sure if that's possible. The coil packs they first used in 03 were defective, I believe they were the Denso's that were bad, they arced on top from the coil pack to the valve cover and caused a short, can't remember what they were replaced with. The plugs have been changed but if you think they might be the problem buy some new ones and bring it over and I will switch them out for you (free of course), there fairly simple with small hands! :D

I had Greg do a Full Service on the bike so I've got a fresh tune up and oil change among other work. I've heard about the coil pack problem. I've also been reading about bad TPS sensors which I'm familiar with on cars as well.

Problem happens after the bike has warmed up and ran for a while in stop and go traffic, it will sputter and die when I come to a stop. I had to rev it up to keep it going but once I hit the highway it ran like a champ and when we pulled into a rest area the bike idled fine so the problem seems to be in stop and go traffic.

I'll keep an eye on things. I'm going to check the idle today and maybe raise it to 1500 RPM and see how it works on the trip.

Did it always do it or just after the service ??
Maybe someone bumped it or turned it or something by mistake?? I dunno.

It's happened a few times prior to that. I'm not in a habit of daily driving it or riding in traffic so it hasn't happened to much.
