View Full Version : Staging at the tree question?

When you courtesy stage (one light), then move up for the second light...............Do you pull up just enough to barely trip the second light? It would see this would better your 60's time. Tire stays in the beam longer for momentum. I was just curious if this was true and if I was crazy for doing this? :D

yes its true
deep staging is what its called I belive.
yes its true
deep staging is what its called I belive.i thought deep staging was when the tire had already lost the first light and you are staged again with only one yellow on.

nope, it is shallow staging.
deep staging is when you pull in so far, the pre stage bulb goes out. this is done for reaction time in braket racing.

I did not know that bracket racers did this. Learn something new every day. :) I used to stage in the taint area.

You are discussing "rollout".
When you slip in just enough to light the 2nd bulb you are shallow staged.
When you stage far enough to put out the 1st bulb that's deep staging. Some tracks will not allow this.
Shallow staging "slows" reaction times, deep staging "quickens" them.
When bracket racing I always stage just deep enough to light the 2nd bulb. That way I know i'm staged at the same exact spot every time and can be consistent (well there goes a bracket racing "secret" :) )
You can also affect rollout with your front tire diameter.

How much distance are we looking at here? Between deep staging and shallow staging? An inch? Two? A foot?

Yeah.....my silly ass did that!
It was on a .500 ProTree at Bella Rose La. at No Problem Raceway and I did stage shallow. The left lane rolls slightly!
It won't happen again........line lock on the driver wheel by the time I go back to the track.

I always "shallow stage," because with a clutch, I ride the friction point on the line, and with a deep stage the car will roll out and redlight... ;)

That is correct it is called a shallow stage when you just trip the 2nd beam.

When does the ET clock start?
SSMAN

When does the ET clock start?
When the tires are free of the beam. Thats why I do the shallow stage. I get about 6" of roll for momentum before the time starts. ;)

When does the ET clock start?
When you roll out of the 2nd beam (bottom bulb).
The time from the time the green light comes on until you roll out of the 2nd beam is your reaction time.

That makes sense now. But, just to make sure I understand it...
A shallow stage (front edge of the front tire just broke the second beam) makes a better for 60' ET because you get a "rolling start".
A deep stage (rear edge of the front tire is just about to roll out of the second beam) makes a better reaction time because the reaction time clock stops as soon as your front tire rolls out of the second beam.
Is that right?
How much difference can a shallow stage vs. a deep stage make on 60' ETs?

That's about right.
There are two variables with reaction time. The first one is you - when you perceive that you need to go and stab the gas. The second variable is how the car launches.
Deep staging "tends" to quicken reaction times because the car is physically closer to stopping the reaction timer. Still, the final reacton time is up to the driver. You can get a slow reaction time while deep staged, or red light while shallow staged. I've learned to get .510/.530 reaction times while shallow staged so it can be done.
Shallow staging will improve your 60' because as you said you get a rolling start at it.

For your last question................pends on traction and the power of the car.

If shallow staging can affect a 60' ET by maybe 0.20 seconds, then that coupled with a good hook might explain why I got a 1.87 and a 2.15 60' ET the other night when most of my 60' ETs are like 2.2x. I'm guessing I did minimal spinning at launch and it was all before actually rolling off the second beam, if that's even feasible. That sounds more plausible to me than the ET clock hiccuping.
