I've been a little inconsistent in my schedule at times, but despite that, up until last week, i've noticed gains. I'm satisfied with my legs so i've been sticking with upper body workouts as i've got really small forearms and could use more strength and mass in my bicep and triceps. I try to work every muscle above the waist mon/wed/fri. I typically do 3 sets of 10 on a particular machine that works an area. But i'm going to be changing that starting Friday. For one, I'm doing twice the work on my deltoids and upper back than I am with the rest of my upper body. And secondly, lots of reps aren't the best way to put on mass. So i'll be changing things up Friday to better suit my goals. My question is, is 3 times a week on upper body too much? Since I missed my wed and fri workouts last week, I hit it up Sunday and then tonight. Sunday I felt great, better than ever, maybe it was all the extra days rest. I was able to throw up 4 sets of 12 on bench press of the same weight that I'm normally do. As normally, I do 3 sets of 10 on bench, where i'm really struggling to get the 10th one up on the last set. Then I turn right around tonight and struggle and stop on rep 8, set 2. Now I did up the weight on my 2 previous machines (deltoids/chest/upperback). I'm thinking that may have exerted too much on those, but it got me wondering, even though prior to this week, 3 times a week i've had no problems, is 3 times a week for an area too much?

Train each bodypart once a week, and push yourself hard enough to earn a week's rest. Abs and calves can be done every other day.

They're right Stephen. You need to give your muscles more time to recover. You will see bigger gains quicker if you work a muscle group no more than twice a week. And if you workout hard then once a week is good enough.
