I was able to look at an ls1 in great detail today and, I have come up with why the ls1 motor is so good.
First, I noticed that a set of Ford 302 EFI fuel rails fit the ls1 intake without modifying the injector bosses. This tells me that the intake spacing is the same as a 302. Also, the exhaust ports are in the same location as a SBF because you can just cut off the header flange of a set of 351w headers and weld on the ls1 flange without any other modification. Hmmmm, also notice that gm change the 17 head bolts from the original sbc to only 10 head bolts on the ls1. Yep, same as a Ford 302/351.
In conclusion, gm built a very good/strong running motor. They just copied the SBF almost identically.
I am sick of hearing you ls1 guys talk all your trash. I will be at redline tomorrow. Any of you guys want to race, bring it. Apparantly you can outrun anything in the other lane.
Better yet, at 4:00pm, you can make a shot for low et small block. Should be an easy $100.00 for you almighty SBFls1.

So because the rails are close, the headers line up and the same number of head bolts, the motors are identical?
Just out of curiosity, do you think E7s flow anywhere near what a 241 casting flows? You did say they were a direct copy.
So your telling me a 302(punched and stroked to a 346, so you dont bitch about cubes) with E7s and a cam will dyno as much? Keep in mind both having their identical heads, since they are the same and all.

I fail to see how the motor is a direct copy or evolution of a sbf.
The ignition system is totally different. Intake design is different
Am I too asume because the exhaust ports are seperated unlike the sbc that it is a ford copy? So any other head that has those characteristics is a copy?
So they 241 or earlier LS1 head casting is a copy of the E7 and there for flows the exact same, right?
Funny I dont see and 347s with E7s, even if I did they wouldnt put 420hp to the ground with a cam.
Since the 241 casting is such a great head, why dont people use E7s more instead of buying Trick Flows or Edlebrocks? The 241 is copied off the E7 apparently. So the heads should perform the same.

With stock heads, less.
The E7s just dont flow as much.
I will say it will be close though, E7s arent all bad, but if your building a 347 why put stock heads on it?
With a healthy cam/ some decent heads(TFS, EdlePerf, Brodix) you can put up some numbers. Very close to a head cam LS1 too. The motors are pretty well matched for NA purposes.
All my BS was refering to the copy comment by TT, nothing to do with you really.

cam only refers to no ported/aftermarket heads. Everything else in the book is done.
To put it into perspective of just how hard it is to get an ls1 with a cam to run low 7's, I threw a cam in mine and it ran a 7.1 first pass out. Rocket science..lol. With some tuning it should run a .8-.9.

the similarities between the SBF and the LS? castings are uncanny. i pretty much consider it the ultimate SBF.
as far as similarites... we are talking about the motor. not the ignition system (since the SBF was designed to run a dizzy) or the intake (totally different applications to make it fit into a different vehicle.) or the headflow. JUST the basic design engineering. you are reading WAY too far into what TT said. he was speaking of the basic structure of the engine, not the accesories designed later by different departments.
and from what little birdies tell me, the LS1 base structure wasn't even designed by Chevy. its a european design chevy damn near perfected.
you can damn near set a LS? head onto a ford block.
the headers from a 351 can be massaged to work without even cutting the flanges.
the rails fit with ease.
bore spacing is eerily identical, as is intake/exhaust runner design.
basically, it is a motor that has ALOT in common with the SBF. comparing head FLOW designs is moot, since that is not an inherent deisgn feature as far as basic engineering is concerned. THAT, along with valve angle and 44 cubes, separates the stock SBF from a stock LS1.

So the new cam only record of 10.34 @ 128 isnt impressive...To me its not because its far from a Daily street driven car. when I hear cam only setup I see Daily Driver right after it...

Where is the thinking outside of the box? Where is the hot rodding? Where is the unique "stamp" that the owner has put on his car with his chosen modifications?
You know, I think about that little sunfire at the cruise. It wasn't exactly a 6 second ride, but clearly the guy that owns that car is a hot rodder. It went a heck of a lot faster than most people would have guessed, and of course it had a turbo, intercooler, and slicks on the front. That is hot rodding to me.

I do agree, its easier to get power out of an LS1 then many other motors.
Reason I chose it is I dont really have the time/money to mess with differnt combos, and Im happy with its potential.
I also agree it does take craftsmanship to make some motors fast, and give mad props to guys building different setups from the norm and bustin ass! :cool:
Thats what is in store for my nova, not a typical sbc or LS1. ;)

Theres not another car that runs like mine does for the mods involved...Now it has taken mucho time to further tweak the combo though.......With some help of some friends we rebuilt the motor, and the only real thing left from GM is the shell truthfull that hasnt been touched. Im confused?

I do agree, its easier to get power out of an LS1 then many other motors.
Reason I chose it is I dont really have the time/money to mess with differnt combos, and Im happy with its potential.
I also agree it does take craftsmanship to make some motors fast, and give mad props to guys building different setups from the norm and bustin ass! :cool:

Some peoe have combos/ cars that have alot of time, money, and work put into them. Personally a "cam only" Ls1 is not heavy hot rodding but where do you draw the line? What we do is far from what guys that build cars for say the autorama type events. They probably think what we do is minimal. Bottom line is every mod an owner does is hot rodding/perzonalizing to them. The ls1 just happens to be easy to mod. I just wish ford would not have gone the mod. route. If they had not, we may have new mustangs w/ the same ease of modification.

Im kinda dissappointed in the modulars, they have so much potential FI, but NA, unless you really dive into them, they just dont do all that well.
Really with any car, how much money you have and time really draws the line at where you stop modding. With the cost of the LS1based cars being more, if you pay for it yourself(unlike some of the lil parent funded bitches), you dont have much money for mods, as well as parts costing more for the newer cars. The market as a whole for aftermarket parts isnt what it is for the 5.0 or SBC, they have been around a lot longer for parts/companies to develop.
Really as you said, to each their own, if your mods make you happy then good.
There will always be someone faster than you, it gives you the motivation to be faster, if you are the fastset, it gives you motivation to stay the fastest;)

Couldn't have said it better. I've owned BBC, SBC, BOP, LT1, LS1. Never owned a SBF or Mopar but helped friends in the past with them. They are all cool in my book. I can appeciate a well built RWD car no matter what it is. We all have the same common goal. Going faster, looking better, handling better. Who the fuck cares! Different people do it different ways.

Yes, it is easy to go fast with one; i'm not disputing that at all.
I'm much more impressed with a hot rodder that did not take the "easy" way to go fast. Like the guys I listed - a couple of them even running LS1s - but they put in a lot of thought, planning, time, work, and money to make it happen. These efforts are to be respected.
I see a lot of people being proud of what seem to be minimal efforts (such as yourself), and this is what I don't understand. Where is the evidence of the amount of effort needed to earn......... respect......... from among fellow hot rodders?

I worked hard and did a lot of different things to my ta besides a cam, go buy a stock ls1 and put a cam in it and it will still be slow. A motor is a motor and requires the same stuff no matter what it is. i'm sure youve changed all the same stuff on your old firebird as i did on my 98. I changed everything from front to back. Different motor (rebuilt), different tranny, suspension, changed rear end, every bolt on mod immaginable. If that is minimal effort to you then you havent done it then. I guess i need to primer a fender or two and sand some of the metal down so i have rust to fix on my "hot rod" and then bust your ass for you to be a believer :mad: BTW, my screename used to be slowpony and it got deleted for some reason :confused: , so its not like im just some newbie talking shit

You LS1 guys sure are sensitive about the "how fast versus effort extended" talk. :confused: You started with a good platform, so good for you. :) There isn't another widely produced platform that makes as much power stock, or has the potential of the LS1. If you don't mind riding around in an uncomfortable rattletrap, then there's really no better way to go fast. ;)

Only thing that shakes is the rear view mirror, but thats beacuse of the flux capacitor being off. :cool:

Mustangs rattle far more then my hoop ride...Ive rode in some pretty tore up Cobras...My F-body still has yet to rattle...Now suspsension rattle, different story. Spherical rod ends are supposed to be noisy..lol
