Hack turns GIMP into Photoshop Look-alike

Posted by CowboyNeal on Thursday March 31, @06:39PM
from the reduced-learning-curves dept.
Mr_Silver writes "One of the many complaints about the GIMP is that of its user interface and how it should be more like Photoshop. If you feel that this is true then Scott Moschella has hacked together GimpShop which turns GIMP's user interface into something more akin to Photoshop for OSX. However, if you're not running that operating system, fret not, because there is a version for Linux too."

Very nice. Now just gotta wait on a windows port. That, combined with the PS keybindings in menu.rc would be pimp. Just the keybindings makes life a helluva lot easier. Although I do agree with the guy... wtf does Convolve have to do with blurring? http://www.dfwstangs.net/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif

They are always talking about plasticbugs on TechTv. I'm looking to get a mac soon, so it's good to hear they made gimp look like photoshop seeing as I don't wanna pay out the butt for the real thing. I've got photoshop on my pc so I dunno if I'll even bother with getting anything like that for the mac.

Exactly. At first, I went through and changed the keyboard shortcuts to match photoshop, but after my recent reinstall, and I forgot to back up the menu.rc file http://www.dfwstangs.net/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif ... I found this site (http://epierce.freeshell.org/gimp/gimp_ps.php). Tres pimp.

Because Gimp is legally free :D And its works for anything anyone may want to do. I'd say it's on par with Photoshop 5 in functionality. I still find myself going to Photoshop if I want to do anything with text, but 2.2.3 had an option during install about installing FreeType2, which Gimp uses for font rendering... so I wonder if you can now work with fonts in Gimp, without it rasterizing them the moment you make any changes to the text.
