As a niners fan, I love it. First Rivers was better in College then both Smith and Rogers. Two-Rivers has been through an NFL mini-camp, Smith and Rogers have not. Third-no bonus money will have to be paid. It's like using your #1 pick for the best QB in the draft, only you don't have to pay a big bonus. Neither Rogers nor Smith is worthy enough to be the #1 player picked with the draft or worth the bonuses whichever one will get for being the #1 pick.

I agree with everything you just said. The only problem is, are the 9ers smart enough to actually pull this off?

Trade will never happen. First they would take a cap hit from Rivers huge signing bonus, Second they would then half to pay a huge bonus to the #1 pick in the draft, Third they would then need to sign Brees to a long term contract with a you guess it a huge bonus. We will just stop there and not talk about there other 2 possible first round picks they would need to sign plus the fact there TE is way under paid and is already complaining.
This combined with there history of not paying there players/draft picks. I just cant see this trade happing.

Niners don't have to pay Rivers a signing bonus or pay the one he got because he would be acquired via trade and SD paid the bonus last year. that is money up front and doesn't count against the cap anyway. Again, you don't pay signing bonuses to a player acquired in a trade. Unless of course you re-negotiate their contract and there would be no reason to do so because he's only been in the league a year and has plenty of years left on his current contract.
Both teams have cap room-SD has 21 million, don't remember the amount SF has, but they have room.
Who has a history of not paying picks?

I've noticed that most football fans on this site have no idea how trades, free agency and signing bonuses work.

Yah I've noticed that too! I never said SF would take the hit its clear it would be SD taking the hit, and as far as signing bounes not counting against the cap your just wrong.

Question 1.7e
How can you have a real salary cap if all you have to do is give a player a signing bonus to get around it?
Answer: Now we come to the tricky part. The signing bonus IS part of the player's salary. So it counts against the cap. When determining team and player salary, the signing bonus will be prorated over the length of the contract.
For example, if a player signs a four-year deal with a $1 million signing bonus, $250,000 of that bonus will count toward team salary for each contract year ($1 million divided evenly over the four-year contract is $250,000 per year). If a team releases a player, the unamoratized bonus money (the remaining prorated bonus money) counts immediately against the cap.

an interesting situation was brought up earlier on espn radio. What is S.F drafts at the number 1 choice signs that player with the attached signing bonus and then turns around and trades the player to s.d for rivers. That mean s.f pays that signing bonus but passes that contract to s.d in return for rivers and his contract. This would work out for both teams and would definatley be kept under the table for the most part until it happens

the 49ers need to do something and fast, I dont think SD will be able to pull this trade off though, the Niners should deal for Dallas' first pick, they could send dalas their 1st round pick, dallas would send them their 1st and Henson, a QB which is what SF needs more than anything

Ok, So how is SD taking the hit?

Philip Rivers signed for 6 years for 40.5 million with a signing bonus of 14.25 million. So under cap rules his signing bonus counts 2.375 per year (14.25 \ 6). So assuming they trade Rivers or release him then all his remaining signing bonus counts against the cap. So one year has passed, so if they traded him this year there would be a 11.875 million cap hit this year (14.25 - 2.375). Then they would still need to sign the #1 pick they received from SF in the proposed trade and any other first round picks they kept. Plus they would want to get Brees under a long term deal though they would not half too. So it adds up pretty quickly.

If they released him yes, they would take a hit, but by trading him, the pro-rated bonus would be paid by SF.

3. What is a cap hit?
If a team releases or trades a player during the offseason, they have to accelerate the remaining portion of the prorated signing bonus.
