ive been looking at getting a bike for a while now but have never been behind the wheel of anything but my YZ80 just on the back of street bikes and i know street bikes are completly diffrent. anyway thinking of getting an old R6 if i can convince my parent to let me have one without moving out, ill get one either way in a while but just wondering what you guys think of the R6 and what i should be leary of when looking at them.

TIA

whats soo good about the Gixxer i hear about them all the time but no one can give me a valid reason for them being "better"

only thing I can tell being a squid is the gixxer is a little more comfortable. Other than that, yamaha vs suzuki. I liked the R6 but couldnt find one in my price range. Got a gixxer and I dont have any regrets. Going from a yz80 into a 600cc streetbike is going to scare the shit outta ya though. Dont get too throttle happy

the gixxer seat is more comfortable for long rides, but the R6 riding position is far more comfortable then the GSXR600. I had an '03 R6 and loved it. The older R6s are much better bikes. There is a reason the majority of track bikes are first and second gen R6s. They have a great chassis, are reliable as hell and fairly straight forward to work on.

so referring back to my first sentence, yes the gixxer's seat is more comfortable, but overall the riding position of the R6 is more comfortable. if you are buying a sportbike to have a comfy seat, get a katana. if you are buying a sportbike so you can be fast and confident on it, get something that feels comfortable overall.

another bike may feel better to you. The R6 was a winner for me, and for most people that arent all "gixxer gixxer gixxer" because thats the word they like to throw around before they even get into riding. its like a "me-too" thing. hey, i got a gixxer. hey me too! i guess they just feel cool. nothing against the bikes, but its just too common to hear IMO. Everyone I ever talk to that is looking at getting into bikes says that. Most of them say, "oh cool, you ride? wow, im probably getting a gixxer soon". I proceed to ask them what kind, and they usually tell me they dont know, but a gixxer. You can tell the people that actually look into bikes that know other good names besides gixxer, like YZF, CBR, ZX, etc. But like I said, nothing against gixxer, but there really isnt anything that makes them better besides the seat.

but back to the R6. its a great bike, and a great buy. ive heard people say that if you go to a CMRA track day with a '99 R6, lay it down in the first hour and fuck it up pretty good, you can spend the day and walk the pits and gather enough spare parts from other racers to rebuild your bike and go riding in the same day. that being said, older R6 parts are everywhere. they will be cheap to fix and easy to replace. but im biased, so my advice to you (unless you already did this, which would be really badass) is to go shopping for bikes. call around to local dealers and ask what they have in stock. look in cycle trader and see what is there. go look at bikes, sit on them and see what is comfortable. hell, even go to some bike meets, look at them, see what you like. im sure most of them will be nice and willing to talk about their experiences when looking for a bike. they will probably let you see how their BIKE feels sitting on it (ELVIS...). dont ask to ride, but just sit on it and see which bike feels right.

good luck

im sure if the guy isnt a dick and you get to talking with him, he'd let you sit on it. dont ask to ride, but just sit on it and see which feels right.

good luck

dont get too worried about that Whitesmoke. My first ever motorcycle (dirtbike or other) was a 2003 YZF-R6. I signed up for the MSF course and it was a month until the next open class, so I had to wait. But in that time i went and purchased my R6. I tought myself how to ride it in baby steps and by the time my MSF class date came around, I had my licence for 4 days. I just couldnt wait, but I couldnt get a refund either lol. Still take the MSF class, but dont be scared of the bike, just be respectful

yeah i have already gone to the honda yamaha and kawasaki dealers. i liked the R6 the best of what i played with but i liked the clutch on the CBR better than the R6 cause i could actualy feel it engauge, with the R6 i wasnt too sure it was actualy going into the next gear. but i guess that doesnt really matter cause i wont be getting an 05

the '05 R6 isnt much different in that respect from the '03-04. Underneath it is much different though. They put inverted forks on, radial brakes, 85%thicker swingarm and frame, larger front discs, 70series front tire, larget TBs, and velocity stacks. What year were you looking into?

Just get whatever you like. People are going to tell you what they like, not what will be best for you. Kinda like coming on here and asking if you should buy a F*rd or a Chevy.
If you like the bike, and feel comfortable on it, then get it. Even if it's an EX250. Who cares what other people think. Just don't buy new for your first bike, because your probably going to drop it.(maybe not, but don't be surprised).
First bikes are just that, a first bike. You will sell it. So might as well get something that your going to feel comforable on, and learn to ride with. Buy an old beater CBR 600 F2. They are pretty cheap nowadays($2500), and as long as you don't tear it up too badly, you could probably get all of your money back out of it. Ride it for 6 months or a year, then sell it. Then that will give you time to decide what you really want to spend the bucks on.

BottleRocket- I'm curious to know who you are. You race with the CMRA? If so, come introduce yourself this weekend out at Cresson. I have a RS125 red and white Expert #62.

oh, bottlerocket, just so you know, you can determine expert from novice by the color of the number plate. novice is yellow, expert is white. therefore, he is white plate, number 62...

Sorry, I just assumed he knew the difference in the plate colors. He talks so much about the CMRA that I thought he was a racer. My bad :(

I dont race CMRA, I just went with a friend a few times in the past. I plan on racing next year if I can get my hands on a decent ride like an older R6. Im not taking my R1 out there. Im decent in the twisties and I took my 03 R6 to a couple open track days and did well, but I wouldnt even think of competing on an R1.

Jason- Another one of my friends from school died in a car accident Friday night and I just found out about it. Sorry I couldnt make it
