View Full Version : Riding on windy days

Rode my bike to work Saturday morning and it wasn't that bad. But that afternoon it was extremely windy (didn't realize there was a wind advisory with 25-30 mph gusts) and I was having a hard time riding. Had to concentrate more and it felt like my bike was see sawing side to side from top to bottom. Kinda hard to explain. Got caught in some bumper to bumper traffic on I-35W and it fucking sucked basically walking the bike forward and stopping and then going again with the wind. I was also getting pushed a lot to one side depending on which direction I was going. At one point I even pulled over thinking that my tire was low and I checked the tire pressure again (even though I checked it that morning).

Anybody else have similar experiences riding on windy days? Anybody else complaining about riding on Saturday?

Jose, when you are stuck in traffic on a bike you are supposed to use the shoulder!! :D

Lots of gravel plus police cars were parked on the shoulder. I did get far enough up that I jumped on the shoulder and exited but it sucked being stuck in traffic

Riding in the wind is not fun...3 people wrecked on this Saturday's ride. One was due to the wind in the afternoon.

My old 954RR was horrible in the wind.It literally felt sometimes that it was being picked up off the ground. You had to be careful riding around 18 wheelers. They could push you into the shoulder real quick.
Dallas was one of the windiest cities I ever lived in.It used to be real bad around DFW airport.

When I first started riding 10 some odd years ago, my first experience with wind was also a rainy day! I thought I was going to die the whole way home! The rain was coming at my almost sideways some times and I swear I war riding at a 45' angle!!! That was the 1st time I ever rode my bike to work. Nice on the way to work and then scary as hell on the way home. I was waiting for the tires to slip out from under me. I was a newbie at the time. Rain grooves and rail road tracks also used to scare the crap out of me!

What ride was this? Anybody hurt seriously? Hope everybody is OK now.

No one was hurt seriously. One guy had some road rash on his ass because he was wearing textile pants instead of leather.

Where were you guys out riding? Any details on what happened? Low slide? Pushed off the road?

I rode all day saturday and I was having trouble with the wheelies cause it was so windy. One wheelie I was leaning just to keep straight and when i set it down i was not straight and had some bar shake. That sucked but oh well. Two miles later I was back on the back wheel. :D

i had a blast riding in the wind. i was out all day, as were my parents. they have a Yamaha V-star Classic 1100. I feel for them. the wind resisitance on that bike is soooo much greater. Im lucky to have an R1 :D

We went out to Highway 4, 1189,1188, 51, 5 and then back on 20 headed east.
A cruiser went down on 4; he didn't get hurt too badly. Highway 4 had TONS of gravel all over the road. Two guys went off the road on 4 but managed to save it. Another guy wrecked into a small creek on Highway 51; he didn't get hurt and his bike was muddy. He rode back. One guy ran off the road on the tight S curve on Highway 5, but managed to save it. Lastly, a rider on a Busa (quite a good rider actually), looped a wheelie on I-20. There was a strong crosswind gust that knocked him off. His textile pants were shredded and he had road rash on his ass. His bike didn't flip over; he just had some left-side damage. All in all, those who crashed (or nearly crashed) were quite lucky.

R1s have higher drag coefficients than GSXRs. ;)

It's not too bad onc you do it a few times. You''ll get used to it. Hell, I've raced on a windy day before on the street! I had to lean over just to stay straight and it was a challenge when the front wheel wanted to come up!

yeah, its something to get used to. just like your first time on the highway. after a while, you dont even notice that its windy as fuck

It gets fun when you do 100+ cuz the wind "died down". Then, all of a sudden you get a huge gust and you go to one side of the lane, start to lean against it, the wind lets up then you're back on the other side of the lane. Kinda reminds me of skiing when you ride on a day the wind is gusting bad.

Supply me with a full-sized wind tunnel and I will. We could also extrapolate drag coefficients of a full-sized bike from a 1/20th sized model in a smaller wind tunnel. The latter would not necessarily be as accurate, however.

Hmm...I don't consider that fun

I understand sarcasm; I just chose not to reply sarcastically.
