A lady at Church was wanting to get one for her 9yr old son and I advised her to get some type of good helmet for him. Then I got to thinking and I don't see kids wearing helmets when on their little pocket bikes.

What would you do?

My kid would wear gear. Indian Larry died from a 20mph fall.

I have to admit, when I first purchased my sons bike he rode it in front of the house, just to get the feel of it. But now it is in the garage until I get him a helmet.

I got my son a bike for Christmas. I let him ride it a few times without gear (very slow) but told him if he doesn't go with me to pick out his gear, it will be OFF limits. Would've bought it for him for Christmas, but I wanted to make sure it fit.

Gear. Like you said, Indian Larry died from a slow fall. Imagine a kid with no experience. Just remember your buying peace of mind. On a side note, there was a kid that was maybe 4 years old getting down on an electric pocket bike at the bike blessing. Pretty cool. He had a helmet and jacket on to :D

I learned the hard way. I was riding mine and crashed at 30MPH. Skinned myself up pretty bad. They are very unstable at high speeds. I take it out now and always wear my helmet, jacket and gloves.

I'd make them wear long sleeves and maybe some elbow/ knee pads, or some dirtbike gear.

I get together with some guys and we lay down cones and act stupid, buy every one wears helmets, knee pads, leather gloves and a jacket. Some wear leathers. I've personally knocked down two guys and run one over...I say only cover the skin you want them to keep!

I DUMPED MINE TOO, STILL GOT A FEW SCARS. I DONT, BUT IF I HAD A KID I WOULD PROBLY DE-TUNE IT AND DEFINATLY MAKE THEM WARE PADS.

My 6 year old son wears a BMX mongoose helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads everytime he rides! I need to get him a better quality helmet cause' he does go faster then a mofo on that luck 7 pocketbike! He does just ride around the house most of the time but when I take him to the parking lot's to race other's or just ride he lets it all hang loose and he does scare the shit out of me! :o

It is not only your childs skill level, but the idiots who are on the road with your child on that pocket bike that should factor in your decision.

Please make them wear safety equipment!

My kids had a pocket bike and they rode it on our land without a helmet a few times. They both now have dirt bikes and they always wear helmet, boots and gloves everytime. :D :D

pocket bikes get going fast enough to fuck your knees up good with an adult riding it. think about how fast they can go with a 50lb kid on there. IMO its waaaay too easy for him to hit a curb and bust his head. make him at least wear a lid and pads

Cool. I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one who felt this way.

I can't imagine why someone wouldn't make their child wear gear? Seems like a no brainer to me.

My son has an HJC helmet exactly like mine but smaller for kids. I have been lenient with him on the long sleeves, but no more. He's only 6 and could probably out-ride some of us  but you need to gear up with the mindset that you are eventually going to fall.
