I don't have much experience but, IMHO. It depends on what you're going to do with the bike.
If you plan on just rolling around with the occasional "spirited" ride then I'd go ahead and get the literbike. Especially since you've ridden a 600 before.
If you plan on dragging it, get the literbike
If you plan on having some trackdays and hitting some aggressive curves, get the new 600s or an older 1k.

getting a liter bike is like an old guy getting a vette...you know he has a problem getting it up. a good rider on a 6 or 750 can whip a average rider on a 1000. case in point a guy at a yamaha shop rides a 03 r6 and beats guys on bigger bikes at kennendale and the street races.

If a 600 or a 750 beats a 1000 (and I don't mean one of the couches with wheels) it's all rider! Any fool can ride a 600 well, but ask a Nicki Hayden, or one of the other big boys what they'd rather ride! I road raced for 4 1/2 yrs on a CBR 600 F2, F3 GSXR 600 and then a GSXR750. On the 600 I could blow by some guys on biger bikes no problem. Then an expert would come by me on a 750 so fast he'd suck the plastic off my bike!!! I promise you...it ain't the bike!! When I jumped to the 750, you have to learn finese...can't just whack it open or you'll end up on your head! @ 120mph, NOTHING turns in easier!
Cons to big bike: Some are heavier, some have longer wheel bases and don't turn as well and they will all scare the hell out of you...but that should really be a Pro!!
I'd go with the GSXR 1000! Similar weight to the 600 w/ 150+hp...where do I sign!!! If a 600 gets by you on that bad boy...it's all YOU!!
Oh...and a note on street racing...don't do it. It's just stupid and not worth the risk! I have parts of my body that don't tan, my bike looks like shit (but she's still a weapon!!) and I've seen guys go down hard, die, loose lims etc. Take it to the track! No cops, no curbs, no grandmas, no limits and no sudden stops!!!
Just my 2c!

Saw a guy flip his bike at the track this weekend. All around dangerous. Just respect the power. It will bite you in the ass if you don't.
I have two litre bikes. I love them both and I do an occasional 1/8th or 1/4 mile run here or there. 600 only have a chance at the track because there it is all rider. On the highway I walk 600's like a Viper smacking down a Geo.

I saw a guy walk his bike all the way up a bridge pilon and turn his body into a leather covered pile of mush doing 100+...yep...at the street races!! I think the tire marks are still up there. Respect and fear make for long life, but what does youth understand of such things...

Are you talking about Billie? If so, his bike is a freak.
He supposedly pulled an '04 750 pretty hard from a 3rd gear roll-on (both in 3rd) @70mph.

yeah Billy, only thing done to his bike is a gyt-r slipon and remap(and lowered)..... and sometimes race fuel. he's got it dialed.

It is important to realize that he is beating those liter bikes because he is a far better drag racer than the other riders. I ran Billie a while back in my car and was able to reel him in at high speeds w/ a 400rwhp LS1. A liter bike, however, would rape my car.

This is definately debatable but in my opinion I like the 1000 for the wheelie power, easier for me to ride wheelies on. Keep in mind I do realize that there are people that ride 600's that can stunt just as well or better than guys on liter bikes. IF you're talking about stuntin' that is...

i say not only does it depend on experince but size also if you are 5ft tall and 125lbs you need a 600 so you can touch the ground.
if you are a bigger guy you may want a 750 or a liter bike
i know i am not very comfy on a 600 they all seem so little fun to ride still ......like a 50
i would never go back to 600 again ............might do a 636 :) but i doubt it liter bike to fun
