Hello all, ill be purchasing a bike around my B-Day in May. What do i need to do before then? Bike liscence? I know nothing about bikes. Should i learn how to ride before i buy the bike, if so where? I was looking into the Honda CBR 600. Is that a good one for a 6" 140lb guy to start with? Ive seen alot of KICKASS Suzuki's around the area here in Denton. Any more info will help.
And if anyone you know will be selling their bike around MAY/JUNE Feel free to let me know... something inexpensive and 650cc or lower.

the suzuki sv650. they are great starter bikes. they are "naked bikes" meaning no fairing to mess up when you drop it. you can get a used one for around $3k in great shape. plus they have the v-twin engine you are gonna want. :D with the bike costing $3k use the rest of your cash to get something to eat. 140lbs??? :D
god bless.

Well he's only six inches tall... so that's pretty hefty for a 6" tall guy. :D
Seriously though. Go used. Buy something that you won't be afraid to drop a few times. Take the MSF training class, get your license, buy your gear, then buy your bike. I'd personally stay away from the CBR 600 or any other 600cc sport bike for the first year, they're incredibly fast and responsive, while this is great for riding it and enjoyment, a simple mistake can turn into a costly one very quickly due to nature of the bike. Buy an older CBR 600 F2 or a Ninja 500R or even a Ninja 250 EX used, learn to ride sell the bike for the price you paid for it, then buy what you want. You'll be a better rider, you'll be safer, and you'll be able to save some money and get that dream bike you always wanted.
Others will disagree, but IMO going small first is the best route. :)

There is a SV650s that has a fairing... do a search on Google and check out the pics. It's a great looking bike IMO.

The MSF (motorcycles safety class) is in place so that you CAN get your licenses. If you take the MSF course you don't have to take the "driving" part of the exam for your license as they will give you a certificate that you can take to the DMV and once you've passed the written portion they will give you your license. Also some insurance companies offer rebates if you've taken the MSF class.
Here's a good place to take the class: http://www.aplusrider.com/

Yea i agree with this. However i might just stick with the first bike i get. My stepmom's sister has a 98 CBR 600. This is her first bike and she loves it. Thats the only reason i vote the cbr. Thanks for all the info!

Like I said it's just a recommendation. Personally I love the CBR's, great looking bikes, and very reliable. Whichever route you go, take the MSF course and ALWAYS wear your gear.

another question. How much would insurance be for my 6 inch tall, 140lb, 20 year old ass?
And damn... there are soo many good bikes out there... i like the sound of the sv650 but id rather have a more sporty lookin bike... I like the yamahah FZ6. I like the CBR because of its "reliability and looks" Jesus, soo many choices. I guess i have like 3 months to think about it... and what i really all comes down to is which one has the best deal when i get around to buying my first crotch rocket.

the sv650s has wehat they call a half fairing. they also make a full fairing kit so it looks like any other full faired streetbike. the sv i just recommended because cheap, reliable, fun v-twin torque. if you like the cbr by all means get it. you cant go wrong with a jap bike really, be it suzuki, kawi, honda, or yammi.

Post pictures of your step mom's sister :D
Take the MSF. If you've never ridden a bike before than you might as well learn right the first time. They do teach some important aspects of cornering and panic braking that you don't learn riding a dirt bike like so many other's have. Save up for gear but wait to buy it when you get your bike. Might as well match right?

Just make sure you try things on before buying online. Sucks having to return shit if you know what I mean. There are some great deals to be found online if you shop around but if it has to be returned once or twice you usually wind up losing out on any cost savings.

Well the flip side of that is to try it locally and buy it online :D I did that with both of my helmets (high dollar items) but I did buy my leather jacket locally because the store had it on close out ($200) which I no one could beat online.

WRONG
My suggestions on a first bike. Dont get a little 1/2 fairing bike. Get a full fairing 600 and spend $250 on a cage. When you get some practice under your belt, take it off. No sense in spending $3500 on something you didnt really want in the first place. Buy a used bike for close to the same price as your first bike. No sense in buying new like I did, what a mistake. I dropped over my 03 gixxer 600 once just doing a slow turn. Didnt do much damage but it scratched the hell out of the paint. Then I went over once doing about 20 doing a u-turn undre a bridge. Thank god my ankle took the weight of the biek  bike came out fine, just sucks to know you are slowly killing a $7000 bike. Get a used gixxer, honda or whatever feels comfortable to you.
Take a MSC and learn to ride the right way right off the batt. Their bikes sucks but when you drop one you dont care and you get your lisence testing done through them, DPS testing sucks.
Insurnace is cheap on liability only cause you cover your own ass. Motorcycles usually dont so shit for damage on someone else, and you cover your tens of thousands in medical bills and $7000 bike that is totalled. I paid $26 a month through progressive for a brand new 03 gixxer 600 and I was 18. I paid monthly although they require the first and I think last payment upfront.
Get your gear and wear it... wear jeans, dont wear shorts and a t-shirt. I would recommend a good summer riding jacket for around here and a leather one during the late fall and winter.
edit - watch your exhaust when getting off your bike. I rode with shorts on one day and my leg bumped against the exhaust while I was getting off the bike. I got a hell of a burn to show for it. Everyone does it once, just think about waht you are doing and you will be fine
I've got an awesome scar on my knee from the header on my old Buell, wearing shorts my foot slipped off the peg and SIZZLE! Second degree burns suck.

If you've never ridden anything before, go take the MSF course, and then go and get urself a ninja 500, maybe if you can find one cheap enough a suzuki sv650. Getting a newer 600 is only going to scare the shit outta ya. SV650s are still capable of a 13 sec 1/4 mile and u'll learn to corner with the best of em. You can get both of em used pretty cheap, and probably be able to sell either one of em for the same price u paid for em. I had been riding dirtbikes long before I gotta streetbike, and I still cant corner worth a shit. I can go fast in a straight line, but leaning doesnt come easy for me. As long as you ride and dont pretend your ninja 500 is the shit, and can kick a 600s ass u wont get any problems from the other riders. We've all been there, its nice to see someone learning to ride rather than sitting at home talking about the 'busa hes going to buy next and slap a turbo kit on. If you learn on the smaller bikes, you'll learn to appreciate the bigger ones alot better, and the key to being a safe rider is to realize that the bike will do more than you can...always. :)

Ninja 500
Sv650
CBR600
Dont waste your time on a 500cc Ninja. Youll get bored in a few months, if you last that long.
SV650 would be a good choice.
There are multiple types of CBR600s. There is the CBR600RR which is the race version, and then there are the "F" bikes such as the F4i which is out right now. It is a de-tuned, more relaxed bike. Before the F4i there is the F4, and the F3 and so on. I say go for an F4 or F4i if you can.
Also look into:
Yamaha FZ6
Yamaha R6 (99-01)

I'd get what you're going to be happy with! You can always ride a fast bike slow, but you can't ride a turd bike fast when you're skill improves! F2 or F3 is a good choice since they are so popular, parts are cheap. Everyone goes down sooner or later, so just plan on it and you'll come out ok...I hope...usually....well...most of the time...

yeah but would you really want to invest 2k on something that is beat up and completly worn out. Because with 2k your not gonna get into something decent. The cheapest i think for a decent 600 is maybe 3000-3500 well atleast safe enough to ride.

That's true...he'll have to look for a while to find a good deal. Spring is when the prices are high. I bought an ex-racer for $1800 and it was a bad mother! 102hp F2, but it was ugly. I painted it up and it ended up being prety nice. Might make him value it more if he has to put some work into it, bit I'd deffinatly take it somewhere to make sure it's mechanically sound...

Ill deffinately want to practice before i get my bike... but No one i know owns a bike... hehe :(
But im a really fast learner and i pick up on things faster than anyone so im sure ill be ok if i dont.
Yea. as far as the price and bike goes. I love my 00GT and i put alot of money into making that thing fast and nice that i only want a bike to cruise in sometimes and save some gas money. Id rather get a CBR600 f-something but for an extra K or more... i dunno. Id prolly have to take out a loan and i dont wanna have to do that.
As of right now and with no outrageously good deals ill have to stick with the 500. If money wasnt the issue id deffinitely go with a kickass CBR like the f4i or RR. But im sure 2 months from now ill prolly change my mind about 300 times between the sv650, yamahas, CBRs, and ninjas...

Dont go with a Gixxer!!! The gear boxes suck. The R6's are good bikes but too aggressive of riding position. DON'T BUY A DAMN V-TWIN. I would go with a good used 2000-2002 Kawasaki ZX-6r. Good bike all around. Can get a good used one for 3-5k. If you are scared, don't get a bike. Take it easy, you will be comfortable riding before you know it. (2-3 weeks.) My guess is you will drop it within the first week or two. Just a matter of time.

Based on what? Seems to me yamaha had (maybe still does have) the transmission problems. Take the 00-02 r1s and r6s for example...just ask MonsoonX about that. They are all good bikes, you can't go wrong.

Facinating...never heard of any issues with gear box on a jixer. My personal bike is a 750, all my budys have 750s, I raced both a 750 and a 600 (all upshifts, no clutch) and have yet to run into a problem. 2nd gear did go out on my Honda CBR 900RR, Kawasaki ZX-11 and my yamaha FZR600, but no problems with my Suzuki. Careful with your generalizations...your slip is showing...

All depends on how you treat it...that's every bike though. One of my race budys broke his clutch lever in the midle of a race and he back shifted with out the clutch the whole race with no miss shifts on a GSXR750 that he bought as a used racer. I think every bike has good a bad qualities...just gotta find what you like. There is bound to be a bad egg out there no matter what the brand or style...can't judge the whole lot by it...

What are some good insurance companies around here. I cant go with mine. I heard allstate was a good one. What are you-alls companies and what do you pay.
I went and sat on a few kickass bikes at SW superbikes... i really liked the feel of the Ninja 500 and fealt the cbr600 F3 was a bit too big... When i start my search for my bike ill look into all the bikes that are offered to me in my price range but I personally like the smaller feeling bike.

by far state farm was best for me, their 'specified cause of loss' ie theft protection has no deductible (least on my policy) and the rate was very good.

thanks alot fellas...
The only thing left for me to do now... before i get my bike is gather cash and get my license.
ohh, the only other question i have is: where did you get your license and do you have to take a Drivers ed like thing for motorcycles?
(( is this 180 dollar course the cheapest one out there? and does state farm discount you for taking this particular course?

The safety course is, I guess you could say, the equivelant of drivers ed. I think they are all about the same price. After you take that course, just take the proof into the DMV and they'll give you the multiple guess on the computer and throw an "M" on your license. Then all you have to do is have fun and don't fall down!

Ahh thanks. Are the ninja 500's that slow?
I looked alot into the CBR's. honestly i didnt know there were different types.
I would like to get one for around 2k is that possible for the f2/3?
Dude I think you are taking too far with your research just go out and get your bike. If you think about it any lorger you will end up not getting anything. If you ride safe there is 90% chance nothing will happen to you.

I agree... I'll shutup now. I will take the class, get my gear, and get my bike.
I just hope by the time i go to buy my bike that i can get a nice black one. All the bikes that i have looked at in the past month or so have been purple, eww... not my style.

ok, to answer your question in your previous post, you DO get a discount through state farm when you take the MSF. The course is well worth it and got me out of many dirtbiking habbits that i was using on the street. It is a bit like driver's ed back when you were 15, but its a hell of alot more fun and most of it applies to what you are going to actually be dealing with like how to negotiate turns (where to be at certain points in the turn), avoiding obstacles and emergency stops.
and my advice to you is to get something, it doesnt really matter what. i say 600 at the least to have some fun. dont worry about the purple bikes. its nothing to get a bike painted. just simple as removing the plastics and taking them somewhere.
