View Full Version : What do you think?

As some of you know I have been looking for a 64 GTO, Lemans, Tempest to make as a daily driver. Well, I ran across this car and I think I might have to get it. It could be made to be a nice pro street car since all of the lights work, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. As I inquired about it the guy said he also has a 64 GTO that needs resto (pretty much what I was looking for). Pretty much the guy said he was practically willing to throw in the 64 GTO if I buy this one. I have been thinking, for the price he is working out with me I couldn't come close to building one for. This car has a 9" rearend with my choice of 5.13 or 4.10 gears, tubbed, 14 point cage, painless wiring, autometer gauges, ect. The biggest down fall is, it has a chevy motor in it. I guess I can always sell it though. He is also willing to deliver the car from SD. That is a big plus! In my search for a 64 I haven't found anything that was cheap!!! Obviously a GTO goes for twice as much as a Lemans or Tempest. I found a 64 GTO that was pretty much a rust bucket in primer for $6000.00 a Tempest that needed complete resto for $3500.00, and the list goes on. This guy is talking I can get a documented GTO and the Lemans for under 10K delivered!! I just have to come up with alittle more cash and I am there. So what do you think?

I'm trying to, I just have to come up with alittle more cash. I asked him about the motor that was in it and he said it has a small block 400ci, 4 bolt mains, ported Canfield heads, solid roller, tunnel ram, (2)660 holleys, fairbanks converter, built th400 with trans brake, 4000 stall Fairbanks converter elec water pump, mallory dist., big tube headers, ect. The ladder bars and coil overs are Chris Alstons, 9" w/mosier axles and spoil. This car is all steel including the hood and cowl. I wonder how much I could sell the motor and tranny for.

Looks like a nice ride.
Buying them already built is usually cheaper than building them.
Of course if you buy this thing and dispose of the chebby you're still several $K away from having a decent pontiac engine. Of course, you could run the chebby but I know that's against your religion :) or you could just keep the hood closed :D
You already have a firebird to work with but it needs chassis updates.
It's a balance between racing on the budget you have or not racing and saving money for a long time for something better. If you buy this thing are you prepared to run the chebby or possibly have to wait to put in a 455?
Only you can make that decision.
that's about right trick, I'm finally inching closer to my car being up so you need to buy a slow pile so I have someone to run with!

If the deal goes through, I will probably run the Chevy motor a couple of times just to test out the chassis. But, then I will put the motor and tranny up for sell and use that money to go towards an IA II block and Tiger heads. BTW, you gotta love the 100+ hp gain going from the 340cfm ported e-brocks to the out of the box Tiger heads. It looks like those heads are going to live up to the hype.

There used to be one (64-66 I guess) @ Cedar Creek that would run up there occasionally (before the track started sucking). I think it was a tri-power 389/4 speed. It was really a nice car and had like 65,000 original miles on it. Sweet, and ran 8's bone stock. Everybody loved that car. I'm a Ford guy but would definitely pimp that on the weekends...

What is so hard to believe? The heads complete will only be about $500.00 more than I paid for my Edelbrocks ported. The block is $2800.00 with main caps. If I buy this car(s) and sell the motor and tranny I'll have the money to buy atleast the block or heads. If I don't buy the cars I will be able to buy both of them (once the heads are released).

Yeah, I know what you mean. I had him send me over 50 pics. I am picking up the 64 GTO from him next Friday or Saturday. But, we are working out some things on the Lemans. I really want to fly up and see it before I buy it. I am going to hold off on buying the Lemans until after my wife has the baby in May. I just want to make sure everything goes smooth before I go spending that kind of money. Since I am buying the GTO from him, he said he would hold the Lemans for me until after the baby comes. So hopefully everything works out.

You're buying Tamer III?

Hmmm...good idea!! This one won't be all original or #'s matching. ;) Though it will be my daily driver. So, nothing to nasty. I just want to update it and make it quick enough to beat any factory American car in the 1/4 without sacrificing reliability and gas milage. Anybody have a 5 or 6-speed that will bolt up to a Pontiac motor? :D

Who cares whether the friggin #'s match. About the only way you can afford a 60's Muscle car is if they don't! Just put a 4 speed in it and don't worry about the headaches of matching up a 5 or 6 speed...but if you are driving it daily, that OD will definitely come in handy.....You should be able to get some decent mileage with low (numerically) final drive ratio.....It's hard to beat a manual in the fun to drive game.
There are times where I really miss my 5 speed, at least until you line them up!
Post up some pictures after you pick it up.

I have always been an auto guy and only owned a couple of 4 & 5-speed cars. The reason I want to go with a 5 or 6-speed is because the car is an original 4-speed car. I was kind of hoping to get a 5 or 6-speed that would work without having to modify the trans tunnel. But, after researching it, it looks like I might have to anyway. So I may end up putting a 200r4 in it since it will bolt right up to a Pontiac block, and it will probably be a butt load cheaper. I would rather go with a 5 or 6-speed because they will be able to handle more power and I will get better gas milage than an aod with a stall. For right now I am not to worried about performance, I just want to get this thing in the paint shop and get the interior redone. Looks, milage, and comfort are the main things on my mind at the moment. I will get to the performance in due time. I have some pics but like I said this is a car that needs to be fully restored. The guy had the front end off becaue he was installing a 389 in it. He was putting it back together when he took this pic so the front grills, head lights, and bumper werent on. The biggest thing that sucks is it is missing the GTO hood. I bid on a GTO hood on ebay and I was out bid for $500.00. I was told I will be looking at spending around $1000.00 for one. So, I may just buy a fiberglass one since it isn't going to be all original anyway. It looks scary but there are no major dents or dings in this body and he put a new roof skin on it already (vinal top holding water caused rust). But this seems to be a real solid car from what I have seen and from what the owner has described.

LOL!! I know what you guys are thinking. But, look up what a true 1964 GTO goes for. This car is worth about 4 times what I am paying for it. That is why I can't pass it up. I've seen rust bucket 64 GTO's go for $6000.00.
