View Full Version : I'm impressed with the gains on a LS1 with a cam swap

I know this is way out of my norm, but I was impressed. As many of you already know LS1's with several mods and a nice cam will make some good power. We had a customer who we rescently installed a cam, built a dual exhaust setup, installed a clutch & flywheel, and James @ speedworks tuned it.
He already had longtubes, lid, pulley, off road Y-pipe, open cutout, and a tune.
The gains are more then we hoped for.

Yeah really, Hey Manny do you know the specs on the cam... Those are some very good gains...

It is a custom ground comp. cam, we can get it or speedworks can. We also put the double spring kit w/ titanium retainers.
Dan, I don't know what you are brewing, but not even "4 of them" in your car will make that much power. lol!
There is no cams similar to that for our motors, it sounds awesome!

I'm not looking for me... Almost all of my friends drive LS1's and I was just wanting to know the specs on that cam... You don't have them by chance do you???
I don't need cams I just need a blower!!!! ;)

Why not nitrous?
I am not sure of the exact specs off hand, I do know you can't really go any bigger with out reliefs in the pistons. I do know where they can get one though, if you want to send them this direction.
BTW thanks to Lane for the advice on the duals!

BTW thanks to Lane for the advice on the duals!Ok I'll show them the graft and see what he says.... The only thing about Nitrous is that I want the power all the time and I don't want to go and have to fill up a bottle every other week or so... Plus I have been looking at Superchargers and I like the idea of having the power all the time... I was looking to do a Cobra Eaton swap but I might change my mind about that and go with a procharger or something like that...

I would go with a procharger D1-sc instead, a lot more room for growth! With the type of racing you like, if you gear it correctly it should be in good boost the whole time. Or I have a F1R kit I could sell you, it has been 9.0's in the quarter.

I was looking at the D1-sc kit... But this is going to be a little while before I get it so no big hurry right now... I don't want to run to high of boost levels right now with the stock bottem end in there.. Forged internails will come at a later time...

Dmcracer has the baddest cam only camaro around. At 3200lbs he is running 6.8's .He won his class at the Thundervalley shootout in Louisianna this year.He drives this car from Lake Tawakoni to Redline every friday night for 40 weeks straight and runs in the street class for points.Thats pretty damn impressive.

Jake ran 6.8's just last Thursday at K-dale on a crappy track prep night.. I know once he has some good track prep he is going to be in the 6.7's again like he was before.. And his car is a daily driver too... Drives it everyday to work and back and to the track and home...

Made some nice power but its far from nice on the torque side....Torque is pretty weak. Reminds me of some of the first LS1 cam grinds that were coming out. Guys were picking up 40hp and only like 15 on the torque side.

So you like to wait for you car to actually get moving? So when you let the clutch out easily from a stop and cruise out to the intersection at say 5mph you like for the car to bog? Cause thats what your gonna get with that much torque at those low RPMs.

OK its settled... Fords are bullshit!
How bout a 3100 lb car with an aluminum 6.0 that made 350RW stock through a 4L-65 with 1100 miles on the clock; would I get close to 450 with the right cam, long tubes, X pipe, tune, (colder thermostat cause it was running 228 on the dyno), and '01 LS6 heads?

I'm not sure how much rwtq a 6spd normally puts down with a cam. I was impressed at the fact that it lost nothing down low, actually gained at 3k. Then at 5k it is making like 50 more ftlbs @ the wheels, and at 6k it has nearly 75 more ftlbs at the wheels. We are now going to put the cooler thermostat, and do the tb mod.
The car went 89mph at full weight before, hopefully it will go in the mid 90's.

Why? does the convertor eat up that much power? This dude went from 346-427, If I am making 350 now, why cant it acheive the same gains? It's not a LS1 auto making 290 now or anything... ;)
Cmarsh93z

With a 6.0 and Ls6 heads, you could make some stupid power. I would imagine an easy 450-460rwhp. And yes, he did change valve springs. Right now DMC's cam only car is making ~ 410-420 rwhp locked....IF he added a 90/90 setup, prob push that near 440 with the auto. 6spd would prob max out around 450-455 avg or so with the 90/90. Different dynos, wheels, drivetrains are all going to affect that number. Also..its easy to pick a cam that will make ALL topend power, the secret is to have one that makes it through the usable range!

The loss with an Automatic goes up as a percentage, so when you make more power, you lose more power. 420-430 rwhp is good with a cam only 6spd, where the same combo in an auto will make 390-410. Its just a dyno number...but look who I am talking too :P

I still need to dyno my combo, see what it puts down, predicting 390-400rwhp
'01 motor, TSP 231/237, LTs, Lanes Duals, and a Spec St3 clutch.
Most I have seen have been around 390-415 at the wheels:D
Only one way to find out though, besides numbers dont mean shit if you cant drive;)

Who was talking about my 408 dip shit? I was talking about this motor called a LS2 if you could read, but that is assuming too much.
And since it doesn't matter much, the Vette will be mine when it is modded before the end of the year, thank you very much for caring though.
Sam, pops doesn't give a rats ass what his Vette makes, it makes 350, but it will make over 450 when I get it very soon... N/A or not. :p

The good thing about that cam is it doesn't peak at 6700+ like most of the big ones.
I know, so I was confused why yodaddy thought with that and a cam and a tune I would only see 50, when this one guy with a 6 speed car saw 80 with only a cam.
What Cmarsh said about 6 speeds and dynos. :)
A4's, with big TC's, will show some wild HP curves and torque spikes.

I know, i was trying to find a few of the cam only 10sec cars, ive seen a few cant find the links anymore.
I was just giving a slow example, there are much faster cars, just giving the low end of the spectrum for the haters;)
