fuck me running, these damn Athlon64s keep giving me problems.
so i went and bought an MSI motherboard, and was going to reuse my vid card, HD, and ram.
so i keep getting this Disk Read Error, everytime i load the OS onto my hard drive.
i get it on different HD aswell, and i've tried different IDE cables, different source disks, and optical drives.
<-- a little upset.

Hey Man,
Nuttin' wrong with Athlons. :) Understand, I don't favor, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, ATI...etc I just go with the best at the time and for my needs. It is likely you are just having some bad luck. It really seems that you've done some good troubleshooting already.
With that said, is there any other errors? At what point during the install does this happen? Do you get POST? Any beeps come from the machine?
Got another machine to try those CDs on? You could also swap hardware to that other machine. If all the drives (CD and HDD) and cables test out fine, you'll know it is a mobo problem.
Also, has it ever worked?
Take care,

I'm normally somewhat capable of troubleshooting my own gear, but this computer is being a cockwhore.
i've used both Windows Cds in the past month, with zero ill effects, the optical drives were working when i stopped using them 2 months ago, the HD, same scenario.
the rounded IDE cables were suspect, so i replaced them with fresh ribbons, same problem.
It will post, but when it tries to boot into the operating system, i get
Disk Read Error
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart.

Here are two articles with some babble that might spring some ideas. Careful with some of the obvious snake oil solutions...

Does the BIOS see the drives? Other then needing to do the F6 thing to use a RAID controller driver or something, I'm perplexed on what the problem can be. No real jumper settings and all that these days.
Post up a fix if you figure it out. (Other then gettin' an Intel board. :D )
Take care

lol, i was just at that hardwareanalyst.com thread.
i didn't see anything that sparked a fire, but i'm waiting on MSI to return my calls.
Micro Center's "tech support" is a joke.
so i call the 800 number, and the guy says, well, you are running a raid pair right, becuase that board has IDE raid controllers, so it won't work stand alone.
i said, that's not true, because even if i did have an array, what would i do about a slave storage drive.
he said, "oh, well, that's all my database says."

haha, did he at least speak clear english? Interested to see if it is a hardware problem for sure, or if some software voodoo is required. How long on the return/exchange?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong; If you loaded Windows XP (whatever version) on your computer It embeds on the disk the existing BIOS. In other words, if you decide to change out your MB or HD you will get a Disk Read Error. If you have a licensed OS copy, you need to contact Microsoft to enable you to install the OS on another MB and/or HD. :)

I don't believe that is true at all. I'd be really screwed if it were. ;)

I'd guesstimate it could be a driver thing when trying to load XP. Hit f6 over and over when the xp install starts and trying loading the drivers that came with the mobo. One shouuld have the controller drivers you need. That is my best guess.

i don't have the mobo drivers on floppy, and it shouldn't be necessary, i've used this exact mobo a few months ago, and it didn't need that.
