Firefox web browser???????

[font=verdana, arial, helvetica][size=2]So while waiting to get my haircut last night I was reading WIRED magazine, since all that was left was gurly magazines, and the feature article was about Firefox secure web browser.

I just downloaded it for my work PC as I was sick and tired of getting pop ups and crap from I.E. (internet explorer).

Anyone else using this? If you have how long and do you like it? So far I like the multiple tabs in the same browser window to allow different sites on the same page.[/size][/font]

Firefox is awesome I have been using it since first release when at it's worst it was better IE.....happy surfing.

I've noticed I can't get a direct hyperlink on any dfwstangs pages to send to somebody while using firefox. Like right clicking and going to properties on IE for the direct link.

using it for anything that doesnt have to have IE. some of our in house MS products I have to use it otherwise I run firefox. I just love tabbed browsing.

I've used Firefox almost exclusively for the past few months. Switched from IE to Netscape and then Firefox. Great browser, nice features. Just wish I could use it at work but they've got us locked down to IE now :mad:

Check out Bullet Proof FTP...using a client is much better than a browser.

Tools > Extensions > Get More Extensions

search for fireFTP. Install it.

It's like having a full featured ftp client built right into Firefox. It's nice.

Right-Click > Copy Link Location

use firefox+Zone Alarm security suite+ AdAware+Spybot S & D = no pop ups, viruses, etc for over a year :)

I've noticed that when it's a javascript that opens a new window automatically, that Copy Link Location, and Open In A New Tab aren't available.

If it does that with all links, I'd do a search for it on google, and see if anyone else has run into this problem. Might be a configuration issue that can be fixed with about:config.

I downloaded Firefox and began using it yesterday, so far so good :) I chose the standard install, am I missing anything that the custom install would have provided?

No, I believe it only allows you to specify install directory. The plug-ins (extensions) are where it is at.

HAHA Well my contract is up in May but no worries.

There are lots of full time MS employees that use Firefox. Right now, it is simply better. Sometimes you have issues with page rendering but it's not that bad.

The only thing I wouldn't do is to go to a secure site with another tab opened. I don't know if it was fixed but there was a vulnerability where if you went to a site on one tab and then to a secure site on a 2nd tab (like your bank) the first site could potentially see the data you were sending to the secured site because it was all being carried over the same session. I will admit, though, that I'm not clear on the details. I just don't used tabbed browsing when I go to a secure site that needs my credit card information.

ive been using it a while and i love it
i am thinking about getting rid of IE all togeather except for the core file or whatever is needed to keep windows from freakin on me.
cause my buddies cant seem to deal with it and always want to use freakin IE and im starting to get random pop ups again that pop up IE even when it hasnt been running all day
ive run all my virus shit and it cant find anything so its starting to piss me off and i really dont wana zap it and start over

I presented to them about 9 months ago. Our product has a java front end. They had their IT people in the meeting as well to look at the technology aspect of it.

When they declined (they ask us to come, not the other way around), the IT person in the hallway told me, "Slick product. If I had designed it I would have went Java as well. We just can't use java on campus"

Interestingly the "write once, run everywhere" mantra of Java failed only on the Macintosh. But, it only took us about 2 weeks to adjust the software to work on the Mac.

Back in the "old days" (circa 1994), we had three different programming teams to make Windows/Mac software. One for the Windows hardware/OS abstraction layer, one for the Macintosh hardware/OS abstraction layer and one for the actual app.

So, all and all, the new way was great. And I got to remember what a cute toy the Macintosh is.

Well the settlement with Sun, makes it a bit more murky for us. We are phasing out the support for the MSJVM so we're not writing programs that would make use of it. Instead our guys are using J#.

As for Tabbed browsing. It's comming to IE. I've seen it.

The java/.net situation is quite interesting.

A major customer of mine is converting all of their old-school green screen counter apps to java, and has classrooms full of previously cobol-writing developers being trained on the new technology. I see that some major coin is going out on this. They are using websphere, so it's server side. Clearly they are laying down their corporate direction for the future. And it's a company everyone has heard of.

I'm not a java weenie (i'm there for back-end database stuff) so it's been interesting to watch and learn and see how they are going about the process. Seems to be working for them.

My company has been starting to develop for .net; our managing partner is real high on us being in that space. I guess we'll see over time how that's going to play out vs. java.

Heck, I just want to make a living :)

BTW, anyone know how to set it to use your home page whenever you open up a new tab...mine just uses a blank page on tabs even though on startup it goes to Google (my HP). kinda annyoying...just wondering if it was something i overlooked...

The reason I chose Java on the front end for my app was I needed a framework that was highly interactive. Basically the app is a drag and drop front end to a cross-tab stat package.

3 years ago I had the choice of:
1. ActiveX (never really considered)
2. Java
3. .NET (in beta form)

Availability was a big concern (what would the client need on their computer) and stability. Given my previous developments using Microsoft technologies I figured it would take them at least two years to produce a production quality .net after the announcement of beta (which it was two years at least!).

So we decided on Java on the front end. To get away from the differences between J1/J2 we wrote a "JCL" a java compatibility layer. We wanted an app that would run well on J1 or J2 with one code base.

Other than 2 weeks worth of work on the Mac compatabilty, we ended up with a client app that would support 99.9% of the clients out there without the need to download additional software. In about a month, it will also run under any device that supports mobile java.

Interestingly, when Microsoft recently release a patch to the JVM (in the past couple of months) it broke my ability to compile the app under Microsoft's VM. I could run it through the legacy J++ interface but when I .cab'd it and signed it, it won't run.

No worries, I keep a Windows 98 box around just for this purpose. :-0

I'm currently working un-Microsofting the server side pieces and with the hope of taking advantage next year of Mosix. Much easier and cleaner (IMO) to cluster using Mosix than it is clustering with Windows.

We are at about 1000 users right now and the IIS box is starting to freak. Some of it was out fault, but not all of it. It will be nice when the sales guy says, "I just sold an additional 1000 client license are we going to handle it" and I can say, "Yea, we'll buy a couple of $500 boxes and stick them on our cluster".

We do have a couple of apps running under .net for specific clients who support the .net environment and it seems to be working out ok for that part of the business.

Install the Tabbrowser Preferences extension. Tools > Extensions > Get More Extensions. Then, under Tools > Options > Tabbed Browsing, there's a checkbox for opening the home page in new tabs. It may be there already, without Tabbrowser Preferences, but I'm not real sure. I've got a few extensions that I always make sure to install before I really start setting up FireFox, if for some reason just backing up the Mozilla folder doesn't work... Tabbrowser Preferences is one of 'em.
