Motorcycles aren't like cars, start small. Ninja 250/500 and SV650 are pretty good. Modern supersports are street legal racebikes, way to twitchy for newbs. Pretty much everybody drops it early on, buy used to avoid the depreciation and if you're patient you won't lose much on resale.

Buy my 2002 ZX-6r. It's a great ergonomic streetbike with plenty of power and fairing. Its never been laid down and is in immaculate condition. Garage kept with only 2k miles. Maintained and tuned by Scott at Cyclewerkz.

Would be nice if you said what you want out of the motorcycle.
Do you want to go fast, carve corners, ride wheelies, etc? Get a sport bike.
Do you want to cruise, in complete comfort? Get a Goldwing.
Do you want to cruise, uncomfortable, but looking good? Get a cruiser, or for the wealthy, a custom cruiser.
As far as sport bikes go, I wouldn't start out on a 1,000. Ten years ago, it didn't matter. Today, the 1,000's bite back.
Start on a 600cc and you'll be amazed how much fun you can have... and you'll be amazed how soon you'll start to wonder just how fast the 1,000's are...
ya i'm in the same boat actually. this past summer i was looking at a new gsx-r 600 Blue/White. dad said he would buy me one if i had a job, and i never got the job, so i didnt get the bike. this summer i plan on getting one myself though. i had the same trouble trying to figure out what bike to get. from what i have learned you need to start smaller, even tho i'm determined to get a gixxer 600, the 05 20th aniv is bad ass.

The newer 600s are NOT SMALL. Small in engine size, yes. Small in speed, NO. Not at all. They run high 10s at around 127mph. Fast. You sound young. YOU'LL KILL YOURSELF.

I would say start with an older 600 or maybe even 750... my first bike was a 92 750 Gixxer.. it was heavy as hell and not real fast. I wouldn't start on a 250 or 500 because the difference between one of the smaller bikes and a 600 is huge. a 250 is like riding a moped.
Try to find something like a 92ish gixer or something that way you have the weight and at least some power. and if you drop it ... who cares it wasn't a show bike in the first place.

I started on an 01 R1 about 6 months ago. My first bike ever besides my Mongoose. So I can't really deter anyone from doing the same thing. Just be careful and take it slow. Fear it at first and slowly learn on it and try to move from fear to respect.
i wasnt saying a 600 gixxer was a small bike, thats just what i wanted. a couple people i talked to in the dealerships told me i was nuts. something like 64% of the people that start ona 600 drop it within two months. this is what he told me i duno tho. but none the less i have been riding dirtbikes since i was 5(18 now) so i know how to two wheel it. YES i know its way different but it cannot be that bad and i will learn. i know i'm guna get jumped on about the dirt bike vs street bike thing, and i've heard it before. oh and yes i am young.

why? youre gonna be pissed when a bunch of guys on 600cc supersport bikes beat the crap out of you. get a 600 to start at the most. 98-02 R6's are nice

a 01/02 R6 could be found for a VERY reasonable price, mine was a tank served me well for 3 years w/o any trouble. Its a really fast, awesome handling bike too, I'd argue maybe a step past what most would recommend as a 1st bike. I'd get one of those for a 1st bike if it were me all over again.

I got my gixxer 600, and I've been riding dirtbikes a long time as well. Sure you can jump from one or the other and cruise around. My dirtbike is faster in a straight line than my streetbike, but cornering is a whole different world. I wouldnt start on a new gixxer. I've already dropped mine and I havent dropped a dirtbike since I was 10. Find yourself an old school used one, ride it, then when you feel like your ready, sell it to move up into something else. My 97 gixxer might not be as fast in a straight line as my dirtbike, but its more fun, and when your riding on the street theres some responsibility that goes along with that. Find something to develop some good habits on, and ride the piss outta it. When you get done dropping it and tearing it up, find something you can pimp.

a 250 is like riding a moped.
Only if you just got off of a 600/1000. If you've never ridden they feel plenty fast... because they are.
Hey, if you want a liter bike first thing... why not? It's your life/death, whatever. You've been warned. It's kinda like wearing gear, if you think you don't need it then don't wear it. It justs helps keep the gene pool clean.

i started on a 99 zx6r almost a year ago. dropped it once. was enough to get over the fear of going down. a wise man once told me that there are two types of riders..... those that have been down, and those that will go down. never fear a bike, respect it. and beware of the soccer moms on cell phones driving with a head up the ass. they can be dangerous. 250-750 would be a good start. depends on how you wish to ride as mentioned above. just my .02. good luck.

no it wont, my brother has one an my 120 pound ass could only go 98mph (not to mention the speedo was probally off, really really probally 90mph)
and for a starter bike.... an F4i is an awesome starter bike, or an older honda, they are INDESTRUCTABLE!!!(sp)
oh, and make sure you have frame sliders!!!! they will save you tons of money when you go down, because face it, your going to go down.
good luck, post up pics when you get it! :)
