View Full Version : New best at Denton. Good, Bad & the Ugly

Went to Denton on Saturday with Slow Five-O and SpeedyJC and we all got new bests. Track prep was ok considering the cool air, very little sun and only a few cars running to keep heat in the track.
The Good:
1.80 --- 60ft
4.90 --- 330ft
7.48 --- 1/8
96.36 - mph
The Bad:
Spun all the way thru 1st on that run. Ran later in the day after the big tire cars starting running and made better burnouts. Bogged it launching on the launch limiter at 4500 rpms. Was planning to raise the limiter to 5000 rpms but then the ugly began...
The Ugly:
After my first pass, there was a lot of coolant that had pushed out of the radiator cap and sprayed under the hood. Car never got hot during the run so I cleaned the rad cap seal and fastened it as tight as it would allow. Second pass, sprayed even more coolant and the temp never got over 185* on that pass. Swapped rad caps with SpeedyJC's car and tried again...same thing. My first thought went to head gasket :( I used Cometic head gaskets and new ARP head studs hoping to not blow head gaskets. Any other thoughts on what could cause coolant to push out of the rad cap  And how can I test for blown head gasket other than engine dissassembly, heads won't come off the motor without the motor out of the car  TIA

Do a compression test or a leak down test.
Sorry to hear about the bad luck, but you did get a good time out of it.
Good Luck
Congrats on the time! Sorry to hear about the motor though.

Do a leak down test on each cylinder. Also, sometimes you can tell by looking at the plugs.

"D" I have a tool that will tell you if you have a blown head gasket. It uses a chemical that detects exhaust in the coolant. Let me know if you need it.

Hopefully it is nothing major..
congrats on the times.

This is a cylinder block tester. You can buy one at NAPA, but they will probably have to order it for you.

One odd thing to check - make sure the bolts holding your t-stat housing down aren't bottoming out.
I had that happen - the bolts would tighten down just enough to seal for ordinary driving but on the gas at high revs it would spray out. It was driving me crazy trying to find the leak until I had it on sean freese's dyno with the hood up and finally saw where the leak was.
Otherwise I think you're getting pressure into the cooling system. You can get a kit from napa that will check for exhaust gases in the coolant.

Thanks guys, kind of bittersweet at this point since I prolly hurt the motor :( It runs a drives fine, doesn't spit coolant unless under boost. The coolant is definitely coming from the rad cap. I have heard of the coolant chemical tester, will it work with the new orange coolant that 2003 up Fords use?

wow, good times, whats your combo???
4.6 SOHC, .020" over JE forged pistons, forged Cobra crank, Manley H beam rods
PNP PI heads w/ oversized valves
VT mild blower grind cams
Bullitt intake
Procharger P1SC intercooled, making 15 psi at 6000rpm
Long tubes, O/R, Flows
It gets quicker every time I go out and I know it's got more in it by looking at the sixty foot times, and comparing the mph vs ET. At 96 mph, I should be in the 7.20 to 7.30 range but the car does weigh 3650 with me in it :o

The chemical tester will work on any type of coolant. It detects carbon monoxide in the coolant. You do not actually touch the coolant with the tester. The tester will test the vapors that are being released from the cooling system.
It sounds like you have a hair line crack in a ring on the head gasket and under boost it is pushing compression past the gasket.

damn Duwayne. Sorry to hear this. Friend of mine had a similiar problems with a Vortech S-trim. Unfortunately it was the head gasket. Hopefully that is not the case but it does sound exactly like his.
Well if there is a bright side to this. You can think about maybe doing a blower upgrade as the same time your changing the gaskets. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks Stefan. It will prolly end up being a head gasket swap but I'll test what ever way I can before pulling the motor, just to be sure.
A blower swap would be nice but I'm sure the cometics will set me back a bit  I guess Momma ain't gettin' no diamond necklace for Christmas  :D

I ran in denton and got a best of 7.36 on street tires at 15lbs of boost you can get the same and faster good luck to you let me know what you find out.
