you can try to start in safe mode and do a system restore to try and get it working again/.

all computers have safe mode...as far as i know anyway.

when you turn the computer on and it starts booting up just keep hitting F8 key. This should bring you into a screen where you can select start in safe mode.

I am pretty sure the F8 key is right.

You can reinstall windows without wiping the HD. You will have to reinstall drivers and patches after the reinstall.

When you call to activate XP and they ask, "Why are you install this software again?", give them the same answer I do, "Because Windows keeps getting corrupted, you know how it is."

Yeah. Use the F8 key and see if it will let you boot up that way. If not you may need to take out the drive, but it in another system that has XP and copy over the hal.dll to the correct directory C:\Windows\System32

not sure xp home has it or if even xp but you can possibly boot the cd into the recovery console and try just replacing the one file and then you wouldnt have to reload the os or pull the drive. It might not be a perm fix but might be enough to get the data off and then reload.

Install another hard drive and run your OS on it, then all of your mp3s are safe and secure. You could also setup another partition but it's a little late for that now.

Or you could just go ->HERE<- (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?hal) and DL the Hal.dll file, put it on a floppy and copy into the correct directory on the corrupted machine. You can do this by either booting into safe mode (F8 on boot) or using a boot disk and boot into DOS.
